Karnataka rolls out measures to enforce plastic ban in temples from August 15
Replying to members in the Legislative Council, the Minister said several measures have been taken to keep the premises inside and outside notified/declared temples and institutions clean.
Management unit
A project management unit has been set up, and in the first phase, 25 temples under the department have been selected for the installation of solid and liquid waste management units. Locations have been identified for these units, and a team of experts will oversee scientific waste disposal, he said.
Officials of temples under the department's jurisdiction have been instructed to impose fines if plastic products are used within their premises. However, this order will not apply to private temples, the Minister clarified.
The Minister further stated that funds collected in government temples will be used only for the maintenance, renovation, and basic facilities of the respective temples, as well as for educational institutions run by them and other religious purposes, not for any other purpose.
Pointing out that efforts will be made to adopt the practice of chanting mantras in Kannada in the temples of the State, Mr. Reddy said that if mantras are recited in Kannada, everyone will be able to understand them.
Temples in tribal areas
He also assured the Legislative Council that grants will be provided through the Social Welfare Department for small shrines belonging to people living inside forests.
Replying to BJP MLC Shantharam Budna Siddi in the Council, the Minister said grants can be sanctioned under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCP) and Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) schemes for shrine construction in areas where tribal and forest-dwelling communities live. The matter would be discussed with the Social Welfare Minister, he said, adding that limited grants could also be provided through the Muzrai Department using his special powers.
Mr. Siddi said that there are about 50 tribal and forest-dwelling communities, of which 40 live inside forests. These communities often worship in front of stone idols. He pointed out that there is currently no grant available to build shrines in such places.

Bengaluru to ban plastic in temples from August 15 — What devotees must know
In a significant move towards an eco-friendly environment, Karnataka's Religious Endowment (Muzrai) Department has strictly prohibited the use of plastic from today. The ban covers every form of plastic within the jurisdiction of the Muzrai Department, which oversees more than 34,000 temples across the southern state. The decision, announced by Revenue and Muzrai Minister Ramalinga Reddy, will impose strict penalties and even criminal charges on anyone found violating the rule. Officials have also been instructed to maintain clean, plastic-free surroundings inside temple complexes. Enforcement teams will monitor compliance once the rule comes into effect. Sharing the update on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the minister confirmed that arrangements are already in place to implement the ban effectively. Meanwhile, Bengaluru will have a two-day alcohol ban next week, with dry days on Thursday, August 15, for Independence Day, and Friday, August 16, for Krishna Janmashtami. Liquor sale and service will be prohibited for 24 hours on each day. Authorities have announced the alcohol ban as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order during the national and religious celebrations. With large public gatherings expected across the city, officials are tightening control to prevent any untoward incidents. The restrictions will apply to all liquor outlets — including bars, pubs, restaurants, clubs, and retail liquor stores — without exception. While Independence Day is a mandatory dry day across India, Janmashtami is traditionally observed as a dry day in Karnataka, though not enforced in many other states. Although the official government notification for August 16 is still awaited, the ban is highly likely as it follows previous years' protocols.

SC cancels Darshan's bail; actor, main accused held
Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa was arrested in Bengaluru on Thursday, just hours after the Supreme Court cancelled the bail granted to him by the Karnataka high court in the Renukaswamy murder case. Police took him into custody near his Hosakerehalli residence soon after he returned to the city from an outstation trip. Police arrest actor Pavitra Gowda from her residence after the Supreme Court cancelled the bail granted to her by the High Court in the Renukaswamy murder case, in Bengaluru on Thursday. (ANI) The apex court's order also covered Darshan's associate Pavithra Gowda and five other accused, all of whom were arrested and will be produced before the trial court in Bengaluru, police said. According to police, Gowda was picked up earlier in the day by the Annapoorneshwari Nagar police. Pradoosh S Rao, Lakshman M, and Nagaraj are among those detained. While cancelling the bail to the actor, a bench of justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said, 'Granting leniency to such persons despite grave charges of conspiracy and murder sends the wrong message to society and undermines public confidence in the justice system.' In a democracy governed by the rule of law, the bench said, 'no individual is exempt from legal accountability by virtue of status or social capital'. In the present case, it said, 'By treating A2's (Darshan) stature as a mitigating factor, the high court committed a manifest perversity in the exercise of its discretion, thereby warranting cancellation of bail.' Police officers said a copy of the Supreme Court order was submitted to the trial court to secure arrest warrants for all the accused before their remand to judicial custody. The order follows a special leave petition filed by the state government challenging the high court's decision in December 2024 to grant bail to the accused. Darshan, who had been away when news of the court's decision reached him, was contacted by police and asked to appear before investigators. He complied, arriving in a luxury SUV before switching to another vehicle to avoid the media assembled outside his apartment. He entered the premises through the back door. The murder case, began with Darshan's arrest in June 2024. Police allege he orchestrated the killing of Renukaswamy, a resident of Chitradurga, after the victim allegedly stalked and abused Gowda on social media. The actor was detained on June 11, 2024, in Mysuru while filming The Devil and was held in custody for 131 days. He was released on interim bail in October and granted regular bail in December. With the latest court order, Darshan is expected to be shifted to the Ballari Central Prison. He was previously housed there after being moved from the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison when images emerged of him smoking and mingling with high-profile inmates. Following that episode, Ballari prison authorities heightened security measures, including raising the perimeter wall to 25 feet and preparing a secure cell. The measures were taken after fans breached prison boundaries during his earlier detention, police officers said. The Supreme Court's decision comes a day before the scheduled release of the first song from The Devil. The film's team had announced on August 10 that the track 'Idre Nemdiyaag Irbek' (You should live in peace) would be released on Independence Day morning, an event now likely to be overshadowed by the arrest. For Renukaswamy's family, Thursday's ruling was a moment of relief. His father, Shivanagouda, welcomed the decision. 'Darshan's bail has been cancelled. There is an order to arrest him. This brings our faith back…The Supreme Court order reinstates the belief that no one can escape the law,' he said. Chief minister Siddaramaiah's legal advisor AS Ponnanna said the verdict would strengthen the prosecution's case. 'We had feared that the investigation would be hampered because Darshan was out on bail. There was a possibility that he could influence the witnesses while he was out. However, now all these challenges will be resolved with the order given by the Supreme Court,' he said. Soon after the court's order was received on Thursday morning, senior police officials briefed home minister G Parameshwara at the Vidhana Soudha. 'The law is the same for everyone. No one is above the law in the country. Everyone should respect the law of the land. The accused have the opportunity to fight for justice further, and that is also allowed by the law,' Parameshwara said.

2 top Maoist commanders wanted in 4 states killed in encounter
Raipur: After giving many slips to security forces in various encounters in past two decades, top Maoist commanders of north Bastar region and Rajnandgaon-Kanker border (RKB) division in Chhattisgarh were killed in an encounter with state police, District Reserve Guard (DRG), and 27th battalion of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on Wednesday. Briefing the reporters with details, Mohla, superintendent of police Y P Singh and ITBP 27th battalion commandant Vivek Kumar Pandey confirmed the identities of the deceased and described the operation as a significant blow to Maoist influence in the region. The slain Maoist identified as Vijay Reddy, alias Chinanna, alias Naganna, alias Shankar (55), and Lokesh Salame (35). A native of Balarampuram Mandal, Atmakur, Reddy was a senior Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC) member and in-charge of the RKB division. For over two decades, he had evaded capture, earning a reputation among locals as the "ghost" of Left Wing Extremism in the area. Reddy was wanted in three states—Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Telangana—with bounties totalling of Rs 90 lakh on his head: Rs 25 lakh each from Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra Police, Rs 20 lakh from Telangana police, and Rs 20 lakh from Andhra Pradesh police. He was a key suspect in the 2009 Rajnandgaon ambush in which then SP Vinod Kumar Chaubey and his policemen were martyred, an attack jointly carried out by Maoist units from Gadchiroli and north Bastar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dementia Has Been Linked To a Common Habit. The second slain cadre, Lokesh Salame, was serving as secretary of the RKB division since Jan 2025. He was instrumental in mobilising cadres in Rajnandgaon district and later in Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki district. Salame carried a bounty of Rs 10 lakh from Chhattisgarh police and Rs 16 lakh from Maharashtra police, totalling Rs 26 lakh. Authorities had no photograph of him prior to the encounter. A Turning Point in RKB Division The RKB division has long been a stronghold for Maoist violence. Following the 2009 ambush, the Centre deployed ITBP units to dominate the area. Calling the deaths of Reddy and Salame the "end of an era of terror" in the RKB division, SP Singh urged remaining Maoists to lay down arms and join the mainstream. The gun battle erupted around 5 pm when security forces came under fire from suspected Maoists during an anti-Naxal operation in Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki district. The firefight lasted nearly three hours. After the guns fell silent, forces recovered the bodies of two senior cadres along with an INSAS rifle, a .303 rifle, a walkie-talkie, daily-use items, and other materials from the site.
