Honest speedster will chase his maiden Group One success in Saturday's Al Quoz Sprint (1,200m) in Dubai
Connections of Howdeepisyourlove hope their honest sprinter can channel Group One-winning globetrotter Cape Of Good Hope when he tackles Saturday's Group One Al Quoz Sprint (1,200m) in Dubai.
Tired of living in the shadow of the great Silent Witness at home in Hong Kong, the David Oughton-trained Cape Of Good Hope hit the road – racing a remarkable 12 times overseas and bagging wins in the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (1,200m) in the United Kingdom and the Group One William Reid Stakes (1,200m) at Moonee Valley in 2005.
A Group Three winner in Hong Kong, the John Size-trained Howdeepisyourlove has produced consecutive Group One third placings behind superstar sprinter Ka Ying Rising and the classy Helios Express.
'Anyone who has been in Hong Kong for as long as I have remembers the Cape Of Good Hope story, where he got sick of chasing Silent Witness so they said 'let's go overseas' and they took him around the planet and started winning races,' said bloodstock agent David Price, who sourced both Silent Witness and Howdeepisyourlove.
'I'm not quite sure it'll be the same as that, but I know how much John likes this meeting and this just looked such a good target for him.
'You sit there and go 'do we want to keep chasing [Ka Ying Rising] or do we want a little bit of glory ourselves?'.'
In chasing his first Group One success, Howdeepisyourlove will also be hunting a first overseas victory for trainer Size and a breakthrough Al Quoz Sprint win for Price's Price Bloodstock operation.
It'll be the third year in a row Size and Price have had a presence in the Al Quoz Sprint, with Sight Success running fourth in 2023 and fifth behind fellow Hong Kong galloper California Spangle last year.
'We've had a couple of goes at it – it just fits. It's such good timing,' said Price, who also had the David Hall-trained Bundle Of Joy run fifth in the race in 2015.
'I feel like Howdeepisyourlove looks like a slightly upgraded model [compared to Sight Success] and it's hard not to be excited by what we're seeing on paper.
'I would say this is as good as one of ours has looked going into an overseas race out of most of the recent ones,' added Price, who tasted Group One glory abroad thanks to Silent Witness' victory in the 2005 Sprinters Stakes (1,200m) in Japan.
A $3.20 favourite in fixed-odds markets, Howdeepisyourlove's closest market rival is British galloper Believing, who he beat home by seven lengths when running fifth in last April's Group One Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m).
'I'm really looking forward to his race,' said Howdeepisyourlove's jockey James McDonald. 'He's a really good horse who's really consistent, so I think that's a really good thing when travelling.
'He's competed against the best sprinter in the world at the moment in Ka Ying Rising. Obviously a fair way back behind him, but he's always second or third duelling it out with Helios Express.
'I think that formline is as good as any sprinting formline around. You could safely say if Ka Ying Rising was in this field he'd be a very short-priced favourite and probably winning by four or five lengths, so we're in the ballpark and I think he's a terrific hope.'
Hong Kong has a strong record in the Al Quoz Sprint, winning it three times from 17 runners, and Price knows a fourth success would mean a lot to all involved, including Colin Lo Chor-cheong – who raced Bundle Of Joy and is part of the Lo Profile Syndicate that owns Howdeepisyourlove.
'I'm always happy when they win for other people, so it's a little bit unique,' he said.
'There's a couple of syndicate members who have been good friends for a long time and they can't believe we're on this ride. I'm very excited to be a part of it, that's for sure.'

Luke Ferraris ready to dazzle at Sha Tin after shaking off fever

Luke Ferraris has shaken off the worst of the fever that sidelined him from Wednesday night's Happy Valley meeting and is hoping he has the ammunition to continue his strong recent form at Sha Tin on Saturday. Victorious at the past two meetings he has ridden at, Ferraris will feature in both of Saturday's Group Three features but must overcome barrier 10 aboard Lucky With You in the Sha Tin Vase (1,200m) and Chancheng Glory in the Lion Rock Trophy (1,600m). 'Lucky With You is going to need the rain to stay away. He's definitely more effective on a firm track, so that doesn't look great, and he's also got a bad barrier to contend with as well,' said Ferraris. 'But he's got nice horses drawn around him, so if he can get on the back of a nice one and get a nice pull through the run, hopefully he can bring that Class One form up to this Group Three. Seriously impressive, Dazzling Fit! 🤯@EustaceRacing's 3YO son of Ribchester explodes to a first win at Sha Tin under @LukeFerraris...#LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) May 4, 2025 'Chancheng Glory also has a bad barrier but his raceday form is honest and if the pace is on and he can get a nice run in transit, hopefully he closes off well.' Ferraris fared better at the draw with smart youngster Dazzling Fit, who has gate three but must carry 135lbs as he shoots for consecutive victories in the Class Four Tin Sam Handicap (1,400m). 'Dazzling Fit has finally pulled a gate, which is nice. Hopefully he can lob somewhere around midfield. It will be a good test. He's a young horse with a lot of weight to shoulder, but he is a big fella so hopefully it's not too much of an issue for him. He's definitely a horse on the rise,' said Ferraris, who also looks to be a winning chance aboard Hong Kong debutant Infinite Resolve in the Class Three Tai Wai Handicap (1,200m). 'Infinite Resolve's last trial at the Valley was good and he looks to be a versatile horse – he can go forward or he can go back. I'll see what Mark [Newnham] wants to do. His prep going into the run has been good, he hasn't really put a foot wrong and he seems honest enough. It will be interesting to see what he does.'

Pierre Ng eyes Group Three glory in bid to kick-start stable's late-season push

Pierre Ng (left) has four runners across Saturday's pair of Group Three features at Sha Tin. Photos: Kenneth Chan Battling a quiet second half of the season, Pierre Ng Pang-chi hopes to kick-start a winning run to end his campaign when he launches a strong assault on Saturday's Group Three features at Sha Tin. Runner-up to Francis Lui Kin-wai in last year's dramatic finale to the trainers' championship, Ng picked up where he left off to lead the race for the title through to January this term. However, the 41-year-old has managed just 10 winners since the Lunar New Year meeting and slipped to eighth in the premiership standings with 38 winners. 'It has been a bit quiet,' Ng admitted. 'Even last year, after the Chinese New Year it was quite quiet as well. That's something I have to think about during the off-season. I gave many horses a break during the middle of the season and then I've brought them back, so I'm looking forward to June. 'I won't have a title run or anything like that, but we'll just keep on going and rolling and then wait for next season.' Ng will aim to replicate last year's haul of three wins from the final four Group races of the Hong Kong season when he starts Johannes Brahms and Ka Ying Generation in the Lion Rock Trophy (1,600m) and Mugen and Beauty Waves in the Sha Tin Vase (1,200m) on Saturday. Johannes Brahms could be Ng's strongest chance of the quartet, with the talented four-year-old lining up for the first time since his unlucky sixth to Cap Ferrat in the Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) in March. The Irish import also had excuses when a fast-finishing third to Rubylot in the Classic Cup (1,800m) and was an impressive Class Two winner over a mile in February. 'He's been running very well for us. We've given him three trials in between runs and we targeted this race before the Derby,' Ng said. Tough win, Johannes Brahms! 💪 Former Aidan O'Brien galloper grabs a second win in Hong Kong, taking the Class 2 Heung Yee Kuk Cup at Sha Tin, for @Atzenijockey and Pierre Ng... 🏆#LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) February 16, 2025 'With a light weight [115lbs] over a mile and Andrea [Atzeni] on, hopefully it works out for us. He's trialled well and he's fit and well.' Johannes Brahms has drawn barrier five in the field of 11, which is headlined by last-start Group One Champions Mile winner Red Lion. The John Size-trained Red Lion has to overcome the burden of top weight of 135lbs. Ka Ying Generation will race for the first time since bleeding from both nostrils in December's Group One Hong Kong Vase (2,400m). Matthew Poon Ming-fai will take the ride on Saturday. Johannes Brahms and Ka Ying Generation will progress to the Group Three Premier Plate (1,800m) on June 22. Ng won the Lion Rock Trophy-Premier Plate double with Galaxy Patch last year. Mugen will use the Sha Tin Vase as a warm-up to his Group Three Premier Cup (1,400m) title defence and Ng was buoyed by the sprinter's trial win at Conghua last week. 'He trialled really well the other day with Karis [Teetan on board]. He was very happy with him and said the horse is back in form,' Ng said of Mugen, who has shown indifferent form since his failed trip to Japan for last September's Group One Sprinters Stakes (1,200m). 'But Karis won't be riding him. He's riding Victor The Winner and Andrea is riding Mugen. With the light weight [115lbs] over 1,200m, I think he'll get prize money and hopefully he runs well. I know it's a bit sharp for him, but he's fresh enough and then we'll target the race we won with him last year.' Angus Chung Yik-lai will ride Beauty Waves, who has mostly raced at the top level behind superstar Ka Ying Rising since winning October's Group Three National Day Cup (1,000m). 'He's been a bit disappointing his last few runs, but he's been running against top horses and now drops back into Group Three, which he's won at before,' Ng said. 'We tried to switch him off his last couple of races but it didn't really work, so this race we'll just let him roll and with the light weight [115lbs], hopefully he's tough enough to stay on.'

Tom Marquand up for the fight as Dubai Honour aims to halt Voyage Bubble's bid for history

The 27-year-old is hoping to break his Group One duck in Hong Kong on the four-time top-level scorer Tom Marquand has huge respect for Triple Crown-seeking Voyage Bubble but thinks Dubai Honour has the right credentials to give the United Kingdom back-to-back wins in Sunday's Group One Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m) at Sha Tin. Marquand and Dubai Honour are yet to win a top-level prize back home but the pair come alive when sent abroad, winning three Group Ones in Sydney and another in France. The Pride Of Dubai galloper finished second in December's Group One Hong Kong Vase (2,400m) and has remained in career-best form since, landing the Group One Tancred Stakes at Rosehill (2,400m) on April 1. Just 11 days later, Dubai Honour ran a mighty race to finish second to superstar mare Via Sistina in the Group One Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2,000m) and after a month's breather back in the UK, he is back on the road. It's a matter of honour! 👏@WilliamHaggas and @TomMarquand do it again with Dubai Honour who pops another Australian G1 on his shelf with a win in the Tancred Stakes!@aus_turf_club — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) April 1, 2025 Marquand reports the galloper to be in rude health as he prepares to emulate Rebel's Romance and win the Champions & Chater Cup for the raiders. 'I haven't been massively involved with him since his last run but Issy Paul is basically world-renowned for looking after him now – she does an amazing job,' said Marquand. 'Physically and mentally he's been doing really well and she's happy with him. That's obviously exactly what I want to be hearing. The travelling never affects him now – he's an older gelding so it doesn't faze him. 'He's got that attitude that makes it that much more straightforward – travelling is not an easy thing to do for the horses so it makes our life a lot easier.' Affectionately known as 'Aussie Tom' for his exploits Down Under, 18-time Group One hero Marquand is yet to bag a big one in Hong Kong, but Dubai Honour is in the form of his life and could be the horse to set the record straight. Voyage Bubble, who bids to become just the second horse to win the Hong Kong Triple Crown, is set to be a huge thorn in his side, though Marquand is looking to Rebel's Romance's performance last year to help with any doubts. 'It's been amazing really, to say he's in the form of his life would probably be fair,' said Marquand. 'The mile-and-a-half trip is definitely more his gig now and there was no disgrace going down to a mare of Via Sistina's calibre last start over a trip that was inadequate for him these days. 'With his racing style and the way he's matured – and the way he can switch off during his races – the mile and a half has just become perfect for him. The champ Via Sistina claims the G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes with ease, equalling Winx's record of 7 Group 1's in a season! 🤩 What a mare!@cwallerracing | @mcacajamez | @YulongInvest | @aus_turf_club | @WorldPool — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) April 12, 2025 'At the top level, you need everything in your favour and no chinks in your armour, and he needs the trip for that to be the case. 'We're hoping that the stamina element could be the difference between winning and losing for us. Rebel's Romance showed last year that it can be and you need those advantages going up against a horse like Voyage Bubble.' The promotional material has billed the race as an epic clash between one of Hong Kong's best and a foreign raider poised to spoil his big moment, with Voyage Bubble on the edge of something historic. And although Marquand has the utmost respect for Voyage Bubble, he has every faith that his partner can do the business come Sunday. CLASS PREVAILS! 🙌 Aiming to become the second horse to win Hong Kong's #TripleCrown after River Verdon in 1993/94, Voyage Bubble captures the second leg - @Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup - with @mcacajamez at Sha Tin... 🏆@WorldPool | #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) February 23, 2025 'I think he's probably the one to beat. At the trip, he's the one you know that will stay and is proven at it at the highest level,' said Marquand. 'That said, you can't forget a horse like Voyage Bubble – he's a horse who performs at a high level all the time and class can stretch a horse through. It would be very naive to think that the distance alone will get him beat. 'Being involved in these types of races is a lot of fun, I – and Dubai Honour, too – have been lucky to clash against some proper champions. It's not quite as fun when you're not winning them, but it's still an enjoyable thing having a horse that's up for the challenge to take on these types of races. 'Dubai Honour and Voyage Bubble are the talking horses and the ones to beat based on the level of form they bring and the consistency. 'You can never forget a Hong Kong Derby winner like Cap Ferrat but I just think the fact these boys can boast top-level form on multiple occasions is what sets them apart and makes them such an attractive match-up.'
