France upholds ban on bee-killing pesticide amid health concerns

The Suna day ago
PARIS: President Emmanuel Macron has signed into law a modified bill maintaining France's ban on the pesticide acetamiprid, following a petition backed by over two million citizens.
The legislation sparked heated debate and gained momentum through a student-led petition that garnered widespread support.
Opponents argue the bill was hastily passed in July without sufficient parliamentary discussion.
France's Constitutional Council struck down a provision allowing acetamiprid's reintroduction, citing health risks and constitutional violations.
The court ruled neonicotinoids threaten human health and breach environmental protections under French law.
Although banned in France since 2018, acetamiprid remains legal across the European Union, with farmers arguing it ensures competitiveness.
France's largest agricultural union has strongly criticised the court's decision.
Petition supporters say their concerns extend beyond environmental issues to broader political frustrations.
Analysts suggest public discontent reflects impatience with legislative gridlock in a divided parliament.
Macron swiftly moved to enact the law after the ruling, dismissing calls for further debate.
The legislation is named after Laurent Duplomb, the Republican party senator who proposed it.
Health Minister Yannick Neuder has urged EU-wide reassessment of acetamiprid's health impacts. - AFP

European leaders comment on teleconference with Trump on Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (R) wait for the beginning of a virtual talk between European leaders with the US President on the Ukraine war ahead of the summit between the US and Russian leaders, in Berlin, Germany, on August 13, 2025. European leaders will hold online talks with US President Donald Trump, hoping to convince him to respect Ukraine's interests when he discusses the war with Putin in Alaska on Friday. JOHN MACDOUGALL/Pool via REUTERS (Reuters) -Donald Trump joined a teleconference with European leaders including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Wednesday, two days before the U.S. leader is due to hold a summit with Russia's Vladimir Putin on a possible peace deal for Ukraine. Following are some quotes from the leaders following the call: UKRAINE'S PRESIDENT VOLODYMYR ZELENSKIY "Everything concerning Ukraine must be discussed only with Ukraine's participation. We must be preparing a trilateral format (along with Trump and Putin) for talks. "A ceasefire must be the number one priority... There should be security guarantees. Truly reliable." FRENCH PRESIDENT EMMANUEL MACRON "President Trump was very clear that the United States wanted to achieve a ceasefire at this meeting in Alaska... "The second point on which things were very clear, as expressed by President Trump, is that territories belonging to Ukraine cannot be negotiated and will only be negotiated by the Ukrainian president." "There are currently no serious territorial exchange schemes on the table." GERMAN CHANCELLOR FRIEDRICH MERZ "The principle that borders cannot be changed by force must continue to apply. "Negotiations must include robust security guarantees for Kyiv. The Ukrainian armed forces must be able and remain able to effectively defend the sovereignty of their country. They must also be able to count on Western aid in the long term. "Negotiations must be part of a common transatlantic strategy. Then they can ultimately be most likely to succeed. This strategy must continue to rely on strong support for Ukraine and necessary pressure against Russia. This also means, if there is no movement on the Russian side in Alaska, then the United States, we and Europeans should and must increase the pressure. "President Trump knows this position, he shares it very extensively and therefore I can say: We have had a really exceptionally constructive and good conversation with each other." Iran president rejects Israeli PM's call for uprising amid shortages

TEHRAN: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has sharply criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's call for Iranians to revolt against their government during ongoing power and water shortages. Netanyahu's video message on Tuesday urged Iranians to 'take risks for freedom' and demand accountability from Tehran while offering Israeli water expertise to address shortages. 'The regime that deprived the people of Gaza of water and food wants to bring water to the people of Iran? What a mirage!' Pezeshkian responded on social media platform X. The exchange follows a 12-day conflict between the two nations two months ago, marked by Israel's unprecedented strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites as well as civilian areas. United Nations agencies have warned of famine in Gaza, where Israel has restricted aid shipments amid its ongoing war with Hamas since October 2023. Netanyahu has previously released similar videos targeting Iranian citizens during periods of domestic unrest in Iran. – AFP

Israeli settler kills Palestinian in West Bank clash, says Palestinian officials

RAMALLAH: Palestinian officials confirmed an Israeli settler shot and killed a Palestinian man during a clash in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday. The Palestinian Authority's health ministry identified the victim as 35-year-old Thameen Khalil Reda Dawabsheh, who died from gunfire in the town of Duma. Duma village council head Suleiman Dawabsheh told AFP that settlers trespassed on farmland and attempted to kidnap a teenage boy before the shooting occurred. 'One of the settlers opened fire directly at the young man Thameen Dawabsheh,' he said. The Israeli army stated an off-duty soldier shot someone allegedly throwing rocks during engineering work near Duma. According to the army, warning shots were fired before the soldier targeted a rock-thrower until 'a hit was identified'. Duma has faced repeated settler violence, including a 2015 arson attack that killed a Palestinian couple and their baby. The West Bank, home to three million Palestinians and 500,000 settlers, has seen escalating violence since the Gaza war began in October 2023. At least 968 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers since then, per Palestinian health ministry data. Israeli official figures report 36 Israelis, including security personnel, have died in Palestinian attacks or military operations during the same period. – AFP
