UAE sees 862% surge in cyberattacks in 5 years as nation rises as global tech hub
KHALED AL KHAWALDEH (DUBAI)Cyberattacks in the UAE have skyrocketed by an alarming 862.45% over the past five years, according to the newly released State of the Market Report 2025 from cybersecurity company Help AG, part of e& (Etisalat). The spike in attacks comes as the UAE rises as a global financial centre and an emerging technology hub, which experts at GISEC on Tuesday said made it increasingly desirable to hackers and bad actors from around the world. 'The UAE is a business hub for the Middle East, which means that automatically, there will also be a lot of attacks,' Help AG's Chief Technology Officer, Nicolai Solling, told Aletihad on Tuesday. The report, launched at GISEC Global in Dubai, highlighted 373,429 "distributed denial-of-service (DDoS)" attacks in 2024 alone, up from just 38,797 in 2019 — underscoring a dramatic escalation in both the volume and sophistication of cyber threats. DDos attacks refer to a type of cyberattack that is used to overwhelm applications and online platforms. Solling said these attacks were becoming more sophisticated as AI and bot technology advanced. The report identified AI-driven attacks, data breaches, and emerging quantum risks as the core cybersecurity frontiers for 2025. Although phishing scams remained the primary threat in the region, initiating 90% of cyber incidents, while credential-based breaches were involved in 45% of cases.
Government Support Nevertheless, Solling said the UAE was well placed to fight the incoming cyberattacks, with the government leading initiatives to ensure the country, its population and its infrastructure were equipped to tackle threats. 'The UAE Government is focusing a lot on making sure that we have a secure environment. Because if you look at what the UAE is doing, they're trying to create a society which is powered by digital transformation and the electronic services that we have as citizens,' he said. 'They also want to attract business. And one of the things that's important for that is to deliver an environment where we can continuously operate even on this kind of things.'
Region-wide IssueA separate report, released by cloud computing company Cloudflare, found that the region was also finding itself increasingly at the centre of attacks — with 52% of surveyed organisations experiencing at least 10 cybersecurity incidents in the last 10 months. Speaking to the crowd at GISEC, Cloudflare CTO Christian Reilly said the region's burgeoning AI and tech industry would only increase its susceptibility to attacks. 'The Middle East is becoming a very attractive place for the bad actors,' he said. This was echoed by Aarti Borkar, Corporate Vice President for Microsoft Security, who warned that vulnerabilities — particularly with the amount of data sharing now occurring with AI — were getting worse. She said it would be crucial for companies to come up with new strategies to ensure they were cyber-ready in the AI age. 'Most people turn red when you ask them a question, because they don't want to admit there is a problem,' she said.
'The good news is that the solutions are there, just go out and get them.'

E& and regional telcos unite for GCC's first sustainability hackathon to fast-track greener networks
Abu Dhabi, UAE – e&, global technology group and founding member of the GCC Sustainability Innovation Hub, joins forces with the region's top telecom operators to launch the first GCC Sustainability Hackathon, a high-intensity challenge designed to uncover the next wave of green technology breakthroughs and rethink how regional networks are built, powered, and maintained. The inaugural hackathon invites innovators, solution providers, and startups to compete across three high-impact tracks: AI-driven energy efficiency to create smarter networks that cut power consumption; e-waste management to transform telecom waste and discarded hardware into high-value resources; and renewable energy solutions to scale clean power for towers and data centres. 'By uniting the GCC's strongest networks and brightest talent, we can turn prototypes into region-wide change in months, not years,' said Mohamed H Almarzooqi, Sr. Vice President/Access Network, e& international. 'The ideas born here could be the catalyst to rethink how telecom networks are built and powered, helping us cut costs, slash emissions, and set new benchmarks for sustainable connectivity — making the UAE's and the region's net-zero ambitions a reality, faster.' Competing for valuable prizes across the three tracks, participants will work against the clock to design and present solutions that have a measurable environmental impact. The best ideas will be presented live during a special event hosted by stc Group in Riyadh. Registration is open until 1 September via the stc Group's online platform. Submissions will be evaluated from September 2 to 16 by a judging panel representing all participating telcos. Finalists will present their ideas live in Riyadh from September 14 to 16, and winners will be announced at a ceremony on September 17. Andrew Dunnett, Group Senior Vice President of Sustainability, e&, said: 'Meeting net-zero targets cannot be about incremental change; it's all about accelerating the best ideas to full-scale adoption. And this Sustainability Hackathon brings our industry together to do exactly that. It gives innovators a platform to deliver solutions that pull innovation through procurement, standardise what 'good' looks like, and give startups a pathway from pilot to portfolio, proving that sustainable networks are a performance advantage, not a trade-off.' This initiative stems from the GCC Sustainability Innovation Hub – a seven-member alliance, formed in the wake of COP28 commitments, by e&, Beyon, du, Ooredoo, Omantel, stc Group, and Zain to establish region-wide procurement standards for green technology, and accelerate renewable energy adoption across 39 subsidiaries in 33 countries, guiding the GCC towards a unified net-zero framework. The hackathon builds on the GCC Sustainability Innovation Hub's regional track record in cutting network energy use, deploying renewables, and reducing e-waste – now aiming to harness regional talent to scale breakthroughs faster and accelerate those gains through innovation. For e&, this event builds on a broader portfolio of sustainability initiatives, including commitments to reach net-zero emissions (Scopes 1 & 2) by 2030 in the UAE and by 2040 across all operations, the publication of e& Climate Transition Plan, a roadmap to how the group plans to meet its targets, the launch of Project Life to reduce Scope 3 emissions, the introduction of eco-friendly recycled SIM cards, and the deployment of the region's first net-zero 5G Massive MIMO site powered entirely by renewables. e& also offers 'Sustainability-as-a-Service' solutions that enable enterprises to meet their ESG goals using IoT, AI, and automation. The GCC has the talent, the networks, and the urgency, and this hackathon is a standing invitation to turn that into impact and set a global benchmark for sustainable telecom. About e& e& is a global technology group committed to advancing the digital future across markets in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Europe. Parkin and e& to roll out 30-minute EV charging stations in Dubai
Parkin, Dubai's largest paid parking services provider, has partnered with a subsidiary of e& to roll out 200 ultra-fast electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the city, and reduce charging time to under 30 minutes. Phase one of the EV charging initiative will result in the installation of 20 charging stations in some of the city's busiest locations. Over the subsequent twelve months, the programme will deliver 200 public and private charging points. DC charger technology offers significantly faster charging capabilities compared to alternating current (AC) systems. The park and charge service will be available for reservation through Parkin's intuitive mobile application, providing real-time charging status updates and secure in-app payment functionality. Parkin, which operates approximately 212,000 paid parking spaces across Dubai, signed an MoU with charge&go in October 2024 at the annual GITEX exhibition, the world's largest technology and startup event. The new DC charging network will operate under a strict 'park and charge' protocol, permitting vehicles to occupy designated charging bays only while actively charging. This measure will help to reduce overstay and unauthorised use of dedicated parking bays.
