You can see right through Audio-Technica's new transparent turntable
The AT-LPA2 features a similar design to the Audio-Technica AT-LP2022 turntable that was released in January 2023 to help commemorate the company's 60th anniversary. The previous version was limited to just 3,000 units made available worldwide and sold for $1,200. The new AT-LPA2 is available starting today, and while its rollout won't be as limited, it now costs $2,000.
The base of the turntable is made from a 30mm thick slab of high-density transparent acrylic, while the spinning platter atop is made from the same material that's 20mm thick. It not only makes for a striking design, but acrylic is also an effective material for dampening vibrations which improves playback performance and helps keep the turntable operating quietly.
Direct drive turntables, in which the spinning platter is part of the electric motor, offer superior performance over those that use a separate motor connected with a belt. But in this case, a belt drive actually serves to enhance the aesthetics of the AT-LPA2. To ensure accurate playback, Audio-Technica includes an optical sensor that monitors the platter's rotation so it maintains a constant speed of either 33 1/3 or 45rpm.
The company redesigned the tone arm included with the limited edition model, but it's still made from carbon fiber to help reduce its weight and includes interchangeable counterweights that can be added and removed to help keep the arm balanced with different cartridges.
To help keep the turntable's chassis as transparent as possible, playback controls and other buttons are included on a separate unit that also houses the power supply. That approach not only lets you position the control unit out of sight since it's not transparent and doesn't match the AT-LPA2's aesthetic, Audio-Technica says it also isolates the turntable's audio components from power supply noise 'resulting in a cleaner, more accurate sound.'

Spotify's new track mixing tool adds DJ features to your playlists
Spotify is testing a new audio mixing feature that allows you to customize track transitions for your playlists. Now rolling out in beta for 'eligible Premium users,' the Mix feature provides an option to automatically blend transitions between tracks, or manually adjust aspects like volume, EQ, and effect curves while looking at waveform and beat data to create unique transitions. This allows users to make songs flow into each other instead of just letting one track abruptly finish and another begin. It sounds like an easy way to experiment with basic audio mixing features before getting to grips with more extensive mixing software such as Apple Logic Pro, Reaper, or Audacity. You could use it just to enhance your own listening experience, or provide a better 'DJ' experience when you're in charge of the aux cable at parties or social gatherings. Spotify says that Premium users can also collaborate with each other to create mixed playlists. It's unclear when this feature will be available outside of beta, or which Premium users currently have access. Spotify says you'll need to make sure your app is up to date, but I'm not seeing it available on my own premium account for iOS in the UK. I've asked Spotify for more details about availability. Premium users who do have access to the Mix feature will see it appear in the toolbar on playlists that they have created. Alongside the 'Auto' option to quickly create transitions, the customization options include presets for 'Fade' or 'Rise' to easily apply different transition styles. When you're happy with the transitions for each track in the playlist, hit 'Save' to listen to the results. If you want to listen to the unmixed version of the same playlist, you can toggle the transitions on or off by pressing the 'Mix' button. AT&T salaries revealed: How much the telecom giant pays designers, software engineers, and other tech workers
AT&T is hiring hundreds of tech workers as it overhauls its network for the age of fiber and 5G. For example, a software engineer can make a base salary of $207,000, per filings. Work visa data shows how much the telecom giant pays for roles in software, data, and networking. AT&T helped shape the modern telecommunications industry — now it has to reinvent itself. "It's kind of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, honestly, or at least once-in-a-career opportunity to be able to rebuild networks like that," the company's technology chief, Jeremy Legg, said Monday at a KeyBanc tech conference. For more than a century, AT&T built and maintained a vast network of copper wires and dedicated switches that carried voice and data across the us. But that legacy infrastructure is no longer suited to 21st-century demands for speed and mobility that are better served by fiber optic networks and wireless spectrum. AT&T is now running enough fiber each month to reach from New York to Los Angeles, Legg said. The new network architecture is less hands-on and instead involves software-based solutions that are more centrally managed, like remotely administered computers, devices, or cloud servers. "If we're going to be competitive in the markets of the future, we have to change the infrastructure that we have today," he said. Salary data shows how much AT&T is paying some of the employees behind its tech transformation. Company filings with the US Department of Labor show AT&T sought to hire 345 workers through the US H-1B visa program in the first half of this reporting year, largely in software development, IT, and network engineering. That number is up from about 266 for the same period last year and well above 69 from two years ago. By comparison, Walmart looked to hire around 1,750 workers H-1B program this year. AT&T lists nearly 1,700 open jobs on its careers website as of August 14, with 360 openings in US-based corporate and technology roles. All of those are full-time in-office positions, with about half based in Texas or Georgia. Most of the positions listed in the H-1B data are in Dallas-area offices, while about 15% of the jobs are in the Atlanta area.
