Review: In the uplifting yet mundane ‘The Unbreakable Boy,' a dad finally wises up

First, the good news about 'The Unbreakable Boy,' a family drama based on the 2014 memoir by Scott LeRette: Zachary Levi is finally acting his age. After a few high-profile childlike roles in the 'Shazam' movies and 'Harold and the Purple Crayon,' it's a relief to see him as an adult. The film is also a belated confirmation of Meghann Fahy's absolutely bulletproof star power. That had already been confirmed with her turns in 'The White Lotus,' 'The Perfect Couple' and 'The Bold Type' (if you were paying attention), but 'The Unbreakable Boy' is a bit of a curious case: a relic from a period just before her breakout.
Shot in the winter of 2020, the film was originally slated for release in March 2022. Why it's been aging on a shelf at Lionsgate for three years is a mystery, but the faith-based film finally hits theaters with the story of the LeRette family and their specific, if not unique, challenges about raising a child, Austin (Jacob Laval), born with both autism and a genetic brittle-bone disease.
'The Unbreakable Boy' is adapted and directed by Jon Gunn, who has tackled other faith-based films drawn from true stories, having directed 'Ordinary Angels' and 'The Case for Christ,' and produced 'Jesus Revolution' and 'I Still Believe.' His stock-in-trade is lightly inspirational life-affirming tales about people overcoming distinct but relatable challenges, often through the help of their own faith or religious community. The stories are never all that extraordinary or shocking, but more quotidian, community-based and family-oriented, and 'The Unbreakable Boy' is just that.
The film starts in medias res, with Scott (Levi) getting drunk at a New Year's Eve bash at the country club and then driving home with his two boys, Logan (Gavin Warren) and Austin, in the car. The numerous narrative devices that the film employs — including an elliptical framing structure, Austin's voice-over narration and even an imaginary friend — are entirely too cute by half. They're used to try to make this rather straightforward and, sorry to say, unremarkable story seem as if it's more interesting than it actually is.
In 'The Unbreakable Boy,' Scott is a distracted, easily overwhelmed dad, often resulting in Austin breaking a bone (there's a running tally of injuries). Much of the film is concerned with Scott struggling to manage his son's medical issues and free spirit, using alcohol to cope. Eventually, with the help of his church, Alcoholics Anonymous and his wife, Teresa (Fahy), Scott learns to shift his mindset in order to not just accept Austin but live his life more like his son: fully present and unencumbered by social expectations. It's a nice sentiment, if not especially revelatory.
Gunn directs the film in the aesthetic of a nighttime family TV drama. It's serviceable, invisible, and he adds a few stylistic quirks, like the broken-bone tally in a childish font or a few animated sequences in order to represent how Austin 'sees' the world. Levi and Fahy don't have much chemistry, though the story of their rapid courtship doesn't allow much time for any. Their big admission is that they 'might' love each other.
Levi plays Scott as somewhat smarmy and disingenuous — it's hard to feel for this guy when he seems absolutely clueless about his own kids. Fahy carries the film in her supporting role, an acting imbalance that seems weirdly apt for this story: the supportive, capable wife sidelined in favor of showcasing the inept husband getting himself together and presenting it as meaningful or poignant. This might be significant to the LeRette family, but the real struggle here is trying to connect with this film beyond a wan appreciation that a father finally learned how to love his son for who he is. Good for him, I guess?

The Scott Pilgrim Game Is Getting A Spiritual Successor Over 15 Years Later And It Looks Awesome

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game was a 2010 downloadable movie tie-in that turned out to be an incredible beat 'em up, helping to lead an arcade gaming revival on console. Scott Pilgrim Ex is a spiritual successor to that project that's getting the band back together for another River City Ransom-esque smash-fest down memory lane when it comes to PC and consoles in 2026. The pitch is simple: run around the streets of Toronto as Scott, Ramona, and company beating up bad guys, completing quests, getting stronger, and trying to pick up every nearby object to see if it can be used as a lethal weapon against three rival factions consisting of Vegans, Robots, and Demons. There's up to four-player co-op online, and it sounds like a somewhat nonlinear story will allow players to explore a segmented map consisting of various streets, stores, and alleyways with a high degree of non-linear freedom. There will be seven playable characters, each with their full move lists unlocked from the start of the game, with an emphasis on combos and chucking everything from turnips to other enemies. The debut trailer at Summer Game Fest Live showed off a colorful urban playground full of slick combat animations. The backgrounds aren't bursting with quite the same level of detail and depth as those in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, though that may come closer to launch. You can judge for yourself: The original game was an incredible mashup of old-school inspirations, from exuberant pixel art to chip tune rock medleys, that paid tribute to a series of graphic novels about post-school slackers navigating social drama and paranormal supervillains using video game logic. It was also made by Ubisoft and remained trapped on old consoles until 2021 when the French publisher and Universal managed to untangle the licensing rights and port it to modern platforms. Some of the people who made the original Scott Pilgrim game, including its game play designer Jonathan Lavigne, left Ubisoft to found the indie retro powerhouse Tribute Games, best known for Mercenary Kings and, more recently, making Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge with Dotemu. In addition to Scott Pilgrim EX, it's also working on the Marvel arcade brawler Cosmic Invasion, coming out later this year. 'Scott Pilgrim EX is the culmination of years of experience working on brawlers combined with our intimate knowledge of Scott Pilgrim,' Lavigne said in a press release. 'It's a full-circle moment for us. The original founders of Tribute Games all worked on the first video game incarnation of Scott Pilgrim before launching the studio in 2011. Coming back to this world feels like the most natural thing ever. This game is about friendship, our love of video games, music, and hitting robots in the face with a volleyball. It's full of lore, references, easter eggs and passion. It's the Scott Pilgrim game fans have been waiting for.' In addition to retaining some of the talent from the first game, Tribute is reuniting with renowned pixel artist Paul Robertson and the 8-bit band Anamanaguchi. Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Malley will consult on a new original story in that universe along with Scott Pilgrim Takes Off showruner Ben David Grabinski (the Netflix series sadly didn't get renewed for a second season). That's what I mean about getting the band back together, and I can't wait. . For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Does 'John Wick 5' Come Next After 'Ballerina'?

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." THE franchise is going strong. Now spanning five movies and a TV series (and counting), it's clear that this is not only a violent, unique, and action-packed world, but one with just about endless possibilities. In fact, the latest film, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina (or, as we'll refer to it to avoid that clunky title, Ballerina) is proof that the franchise can explore new ground and succeed even without the titular Mr. Wick himself. Sure, Keanu Reeves is in the movie, but the main character is Ana de Armas's Eve—and watching her kick ass in a Wick-esque manner should fill any Keanu-size holes in your heart in the meantime. It's clear that the Wick franchise will continue from here—it's just unknown in what direction. This is a series and brand that's now been making Lionsgate lots of money for over a decade, and with multiple recognizable stars in the fold, there are a bunch of ways things could go. For example, we know that we could do another John Wick movie, and now it seems more than possible that we could do another Ballerina movie. But there's also a spinoff film coming on the John Wick: Chapter 4 character Caine, played by Donnie Yen, which will also star Rina Sawayama's Akira (Yen will also direct). We've already gone down the road of a prequel; the little-watched limited series The Continental focused on the exploits of a younger Winston (Ian McShane). So that's probably not a road that will particularly be gone down, though Wick director Chad Stahelski and McShane don't think particularly highly of it. So maybe don't rule out some kind of re-do. Again: the possibilities do feel kind of endless. But we know the primary question that everyone is going to be asking after Ballerina—will we be getting John Wick 5? And at this time we do seem to have a pretty definitive answer. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is set between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4. It picks up the character of "The Director," played by Angelica Huston, who was introduced in Chapter 3, and, perhaps most notably, includes Keanu Reeves as played by John Wick. This is the key part of the equation, considering John Wick dies at the end of Chapter 4. That would seem to signify a closed book, right? But as we've established, the possibilities in this world are pretty endless. Most likely. Despite the titular character's death at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate officially announced that John Wick 5 was in the works at this year's CinemaCon back in April. That being said, director Chad Stahelski is still a little apprehensive that the film will actually get made—because he wants to make sure it's as good as it can possibly be. "Look, everybody seems to want it," he said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "It's a matter of whether we crack it. We're actively working on it. It's just … is it going to be satisfying?" Throughout the conversation Stahelski repeatedly suggested that while they're early in the process on John Wick 5, it's still just that—early in the process. And that he hasn't even officially brought the idea to Reeves yet. Stahelski is meticulous, and holds himself to a high standard. And so he doesn't want to proceed with something until it's actually ready to proceed. "If we go down the road of John Wick 5 and build this story and decide this isn't right, there are probably going to be 10 other things we'll discover that we'll use for other things," he says. Which implies it still could not happen. But, he says, sooner or later, it probably will. "The studio would very much will it into existence, I'm sure, at some point," he says. "Look, they've been great and they've asked us to really try and we have a really good couple of ideas and we're going to try." But still, they are very early on. And it seems like for now the Caine spinoff, which has Donnie Yen attached to star and direct, Rina Sawayama attached to reprise her Akira character, and Mattson Tomlin attached to write, is much further along in production, and will certainly come first. Now that much truly remains to be seen. But it would feel like kind of a missed opportunity if it didn't, right? Keanu Reeves and Ana de Armas are both bona fide movie stars, and scenes between the two of them are action magic. Let's say Wick 5 opens up with John Wick fighting his way up from hell. Might be a little tricky for him to meet up with Eve down there, but once he gets back to the surface, it feels like a pretty good bet that we'll see these two together (and with guns at each other's throats) again.
