Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr says Manchester City fans' Ballon d'Or banner ‘gave me more strength'

New York Times12-02-2025

Vinicius Junior said a banner from Manchester City mocking him being beaten to the Ballon d'Or award by Rodri helped motivate him during Real Madrid's Champions League victory on Tuesday night.
Ahead of the game, a banner in the home end read 'Stop crying your heart out' — referencing a song by City fans Oasis — alongside an image of the Ballon d'Or trophy, an annual award handed to the best individual footballer in each calendar year.

The 24-year-old Madrid forward had been favourite to land the 2024 award but was edged into second place by City midfielder Rodri.
Vinicius Jr provided the assist for Jude Bellingham's late winning goal for Carlo Ancelotti's side in a 3-2 victory ahead of next week's return leg in Madrid, and said the pre-match banner had fueled him for the game.
'I saw it, I saw the banner,' Vinicius told Spanish TV station Movistar after the game, as cited by Marca. 'But whenever the opposing fans do things like this, it gives me more strength to play a great game and here I did that.
'They know our history and everything we do in this competition. It's the fifth time we've come here (to the Etihad) and it's always very cold, but this time we won and we have to continue along this path.'
Madrid travel to Osasuna in La Liga on Saturday before hosting City in the second leg of their play-off to reach the Champions League last-16 stage four days later. City host Newcastle United in the Premier League on February 15 ahead of their trip to Madrid.

Reports: Bayern agrees deal with Leverkusen to take Tah to Club World Cup

Associated Press MUNICH (AP) — Bayern Munich has reportedly agreed a deal with Bayer Leverkusen to take Germany defender Jonathan Tah to the Club World Cup. Kicker magazine and other media outlets reported Saturday that Bayern, which had announced Tah's signing 'without a transfer fee' on May 29, has agreed to pay Leverkusen up to 4 million euros ($4.6 million) for the player to take a full part in the Club World Cup starting in the United States on June 14. Tah's contract with Leverkusen ran to the end of June, meaning he could only join Bayern on a free transfer from July 1 – unless the clubs came to an agreement beforehand. There was little goodwill between the clubs after Bayern's failed attempt to sign Tah – Leverkusen's captain – last season, when Leverkusen chief executive Fernando Carro lashed out against Bayern's Max Eberl. Bayern's public pursuit of Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz this season further inflamed tensions between the rival clubs. Any agreement to let Tah join Bayern before his Leverkusen contract ends would suggest pragmatism has won out at Leverkusen. Real Madrid set the precedent by paying a reported fee of up to 10 million euros ($11.4 million) to get England right back Trent Alexander-Arnold out of his Liverpool contract one month before it was due to expire so he could play at the Club World Cup, rather than waiting to sign him with a transfer fee. Bayern will also need to reach agreement with Hoffenheim if it wants to take Tom Bischof to the tournament. Leverkusen faces a summer of rebuilding following Xabi Alonso's departure as coach, Tah and wing back Jeremie Frimpong 's departures for Bayern and Liverpool, respectively, and Wirtz's expected transfer to Liverpool. Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka suggested Friday he would be open to a switch amid reported interest from AC Milan, a change from his previous position. Leverkusen hired former Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag to replace the Real Madrid-bound Alonso, while it has also signed highly rated teenager Ibrahim Maza from second-division club Hertha Berlin, and 21-year-old defender Tim Oermann from relegated Bochum before promptly loaning him to Austrian champion Sturm Graz. It also loaned promising midfielder Francis Onyeka to Bochum for next season in the second division. ___ AP soccer: recommended

Kylian Mbappe ‘happy' that PSG won the Champions League: ‘There's no bitterness'

Kylian Mbappe said he has no 'regrets' or 'bitterness' over Paris Saint-Germain winning the Champions League less than a year after he departed the club for Real Madrid. Mbappe won six Ligue 1 titles in a seven-year spell with PSG but has never lifted the Champions League. Upon his move to the Bernabeu in June 2024, the France striker joined the European title holders and 15-time winners of the competition, but they were knocked out in the quarter-finals via a 5-1 aggregate defeat to Arsenal. Advertisement PSG, meanwhile, beat Inter Milan by a record 5-0 margin in the Champions League final in Munich earlier this month to lift the trophy for the first time in the club's history. 'I didn't leave too soon,' Mbappe said at a news conference on Saturday ahead of France's Nations League third-place match against Germany, via L'Equipe. 'My story with PSG was over. There's no bitterness, no regrets. It's destiny. I would have tried everything, it had to happen without me.' Mbappe started in PSG's 1-0 Champions League final loss against Bayern Munich in 2020, and the Parisians reached the semi-final of the tournament a year later, where they were beaten by Manchester City. PSG then suffered back-to-back round-of-16 exits before a semi-final defeat by Borussia Dortmund in Mbappe's final season at the club. 'I was happy, they deserved it, they've been through so many problems, I've been through that too,' Mbappe said, via Reuters. 'I've been through every stage of the Champions League except winning it. 'They were the best team in Europe. I can't remember ever seeing them go 5-0 up. It's 100 per cent deserved, they're becoming the team everyone wants to beat.' Mbappe's first season in Spain ended trophyless after Madrid were beaten by Clasico rivals Barcelona to the title in La Liga and the Copa del Rey. Mbappe said he is 'in the eye of the storm' following PSG's Champions League victory but added he has 'always liked being in these positions'. 'It's up to me to work,' he added. 'I've reversed quite a few trends in my career, I've had a lot of things stuck on my back and I've managed to get them off.' Mbappe's France face Germany in the third-place Nations League decider on Sunday (2pm BST, 9am ET), after the 26-year-old netted a penalty in his side's 5-4 semi-final defeat by Spain on Thursday.
