Edmonton-born forward starts for France against All Blacks in rugby test match
Edmonton-born forward Tyler Duguid made his debut for fourth-ranked France in a 31-27 loss to the second-ranked All Blacks on Saturday in Dunedin, New Zealand. The 24-year-old Duguid, who represented Canada at the under-20 level, qualifies for France via residency after moving to Europe to pursue his rugby career as a teenager with RC Narbonne. He currently plays for Montpellier in the top-flight French Top 14 on a contract running through 2017. The six-foot-seven, 273-pounder played for France 'A' in a 26-21 win over England 'A' at Twickenham's Allianz Stadium on June 21. And Duguid got the start again Saturday in the second row for an experimental French test side missing stars like Antoine Dupont, Damian Penaud, Thomas Ramos and Grégory Alldritt. 'It feels good,' Duguid said after the match, played under a roof at Forsyth-Barr Stadium. 'There was a lot of outside noise saying that we'd come out, (concede) 50 (points), we don't have the strength to play against a team like that. But I thought we showed a lot of spirit tonight as a side.' France coach Fabien Galthié also gave debuts to flanker Alexandre Fischer, fly half Joris Segonds and winger Tom Springs. The win, which snapped a three-game losing streak against France, was the All Blacks' 500th all-time. France and New Zealand meet again July 19 and 21 in Wellington and Hamilton, respectively. Duguid, who wrestled and played football at the University of Alberta, started playing rugby for the Edmonton Nor'Westers club and at high school with the Harry Ainlay Titans. He comes from a rugby family. Brother Kaden and sister Abby have represented Canada at youth level while uncles John and Luke Tait played professionally in Europe and for Canada at senior level. John Tait, former coach of the Canadian women's seven side, is currently B.C. Rugby's technical director. Tyler Duguid is not the only Canadian to change international allegiance. Canadian-born prop Mackenzie Carson grew up in Abbotsford, B.C., and won three caps for Canada including a 2018 match against England. Eligible for the Red Roses through her English-born mother, she made her England debut in 2023. Many others have gone the other way. The Canadian men's training camp roster ahead of test matches later this month in Edmonton against No. 22 Belgium and No. 16 Spain includes players with ties to Australia, England, Fiji, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales. Canada is currently ranked No. 24 in the world. —- This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 5, 2025.

Wimbledon: Defending champion Barbora Krejcikova loses to American Emma Navarro in the third round
Associated Press LONDON (AP) — Defending Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova lost to No. 10 seed Emma Navarro 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the third round on Saturday, extending a recent run of one-and-done winners at the All England Club. Krejcikova faded in the third set, getting her blood pressure checked at the changeover after Navarro broke her to lead 3-2 at No. 1 Court. Krejcikova ate a banana and drank liquids during the medical check, while Navarro walked to her guest box and spoke to her coach during the break in action. When play resumed, Krejcikova still appeared to be in distress, often leaning over and placing her hands on her knees between points. ___ More AP tennis: in this topic

The FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinals wrap up on Saturday afternoon with a must-see rematch of the 2024 Champions League Final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. Los Blancos won last year's UCL Final 2-0. They're heavily favored to once again take down Dortmund on Saturday afternoon at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. In fact, recently hired Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso and Co. are listed by most sportsbooks at -320 (implied probability: 76.2 percent) or shorter to advance. 🔔 ANNOUNCEMENT: NEWSWEEK SPORTS BETTING 📩 LAUNCHING JULY 11: Starting July 11, Newsweek Sports Betting Editor Tyler Everett will deliver his weekly takes on what to bet on during the upcoming weekend -- and why -- ➡️ to your inbox every Friday. RM has outscored its last three CWC opponents by a combined score of 7-1, including a 3-0 shutout of RB Salzburg to close group play and a 1-0 win over Juventus in the round of 16. Dortmund has not been dominant (it reached the quarters by earning a draw and three one-goal victories), but it's nevertheless been a strong showing to date by Niko Kovac's squad. Read more Announcement: Newsweek Sports Betting Newsletter launching July 11 Real Madrid vs. Borussia Dortmund Betting News, Analysis Oddsmakers are giving Real Madrid a ton of respect in this matchup, but are they overlooking Borussia Dortmund? While Los Blancos have a talent advantage, BVB has more than enough firepower to at least keep this game close, even against an RM side coming off a 1-0 win over Juve that was not nearly as close as the final score indicated. Madrid had a 57-43 advantage in possession and recorded 11 shots on goal while allowing just two by Juventus. Per analytics site FOTMOB, Real Madrid won the xG battle in that game 1.57 to 0.77, and it created 5 big chances while only surrendering 1. Dortmund was impressive in the Round of 16 vs. Liga MX side Monterrey, making the most of its chances despite losing the possession battle 58-42. BVB jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 24 minutes thanks to a quick brace by Serhou Guirassy, then held on to win 2-1 and advance. Remarkably, Dortmund held Monterrey to just 0.85 xG on seven shots on target. In today's matchup, Dortmund will need to once again make the most of the chances it gets against Real Madrid, which will likely control possession. A key question for BVB will be how it fares without rising star Jobe Bellingham, who will miss this match due to suspension (yellow cards). Real Madrid vs. Borussia Dortmund Best Bets Hot lukewarm at best take: I think Real Madrid will find a way to advance, but I don't think they'll cruise. In a tough matchup to predict -- I think Dortmund is more than good enough to make this interesting -- there aren't any slam-dunk bets that stand out to me, but the halftime draw is enticing, especially at longer than +150 odds. For a safer play, consider parlaying Real Madrid to win and Over 1.5 Goals (in 90 minutes) at -135.
