19 injured after fireworks show goes awry at fair in western Germany
BERLIN (AP) — German authorities say at least 19 people were injured, four seriously after a fireworks show went awry at a fair in the western city of Düsseldorf.
Fire squad and emergency services deployed after the incident late Friday at the Rheinkirmes event along the Rhine river, where images from the scene showed fireworks going off nearly at ground level along its banks.
A child was among the injured, the DPA news agency reported.
Düsseldorf fire services said police were investigating the cause of the accident.
'Our thoughts are with those affected and their families. We wish all those affected a speedy recovery from the consequences of the accident. We deeply regret the accident," said Peter Dietlmaier, a spokesman
Organizers ended the fair early for the day, and were deciding whether to continue the traditional fireworks at next year's event, he said.
The 10-day fair features amusement park rides, drone and fireworks shows, and other entertainment by hundreds of staff along the left bank of the Rhine, opposite the city's historic district. The fair is organized by the St. Sebastianus Rifle Club, which traces its history to the year 1316.

Large parts of Dresden's Old Town were evacuated on Wednesday as experts sought to defuse an unexploded World War II bomb found during clearance work for a collapsed bridge. Some 17,000 people were asked to leave their homes in the eastern German city, authorities said. The affected area includes the famous Frauenkirche, a church that was rebuilt brick-for-brick after being destroyed in the war, as well as several hotels. The Carola Bridge, one of Dresden's main Elbe river crossings, partly collapsed in the middle of the night in September 2024. The entire structure is due to be demolished by October. Around 80 years after the war, Germany remains littered with unexploded ordnance, often uncovered during construction work. Over 20,000 people were evacuated from central Cologne in June after three unexploded U.S. bombs from World War II were found, the biggest such operation in the city since the end of the war. City authorities said that the discovered unexploded ordnances were two American 20-ton bombs and one American 10-ton bomb, each with impact fuses. The heart of the city was left deserted, with a hospital, two old people's homes, nine schools and a TV studio evacuated. The bomb found in Dresden was British-made and weighs 250 kilograms, according to city authorities. Bombs from World War II have been discovered on battlefields and cities around the world where fighting took place, often decades after the war ended. In March, a World War II bomb was found near the tracks of Paris' Gare du Nord station. In February, more than 170 bombs were found near a children's playground in northern England. And in October 2024, a World War II bomb exploded at a Japanese airport.

4 people die in crash of medical transport plane on Navajo Nation in northern Arizona
A small medical transport plane crashed and caught fire Tuesday on the Navajo Nation in northern Arizona, killing four people, the tribe said in a statement. A Beechcraft King Air 300 from the CSI Aviation company left Albuquerque, New Mexico, with two pilots and two health care providers, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and CSI Aviation. It crashed in the early afternoon near the airport in Chinle, about 300 miles (483 kilometers) northeast of Phoenix.
