Diogo Jota: Tears shed in emotional tribute as Liverpool play first Anfield game since forward's tragic death

Yahoo6 days ago
There were emotional scenes at Anfield as Liverpool prepared to play their first home game since the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.
The Portuguese forward was killed in a car accident in Spain en route back to pre-season training at his club, and he died along with his brother Andre Silva.
Liverpool paid tribute to him in their friendly match against Preston, as well as on their tour of Asia, where they faced AC Milan and Yokohama F. Marinos.
On their return to Anfield, however, tears were shed as former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson and Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte laid wreaths in front of the Kop 10 minutes before the Reds kicked off their first of two friendly clashes against the Basque side.
Fans watched on holding scarves, banners, and shirts aloft with a smattering of chants of Jota's name as Thompson and Uriarte lay the wreaths on the six-yard line, kissing them before setting them on the pitch.
The Merseyside club's anthem 'You'll Never Walk Alone' then blared as the two teams took to the field, and there was an air of sadness in the supporters' chorus as they joined in to sing along.
The tributes continued into the game, as players, staff, and fans alike all rose to their feet and applauded, with the game stopped, in the 20th minute to pay further respect to Jota, who wore the No20 shirt during his five-year spell at the club.
Liverpool cruised to a comfortable win in the first match of the evening as both sides named second-choice squads. The 16-year-old starlet Rio Ngumoha inspired a fast start for the Reds, scoring with a classy solo effort with the match less than two minutes old before teeing up Darwin Nunez to add a second shortly after. Their lead was cemented as Alex Padilla knocked Ben Doak's cross into his own net with the match approaching half-time.
The second half was a more lethargic affair as Athletic's heads went down, and Harvey Elliot wasted little time in finding Liverpool's fourth. There was slight consolation for the visitors, though, as striker Gorka Guruzeta capped a frustrating showing as he was well placed to head home from Luca Stephenson's miss-hit clearance.
Slot plumped for a much stronger XI in the evening's encounter, naming most of what could be interpreted as his first-choice side.
New arrivals Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz, and Jeremie Frimpong all got a taste of the Anfield atmosphere, and all four impressed on their home debuts.
Ekitike was the provider of the first goal, setting up Mohamed Salah after a byline burst and cut-back.
Crafty attacking midfielder Oihan Sancet bundled home a shock equaliser for Athletic Club as the Basque side caught the Premier League champions cold with a set piece on the half-hour.
Cody Gakpo restored Liverpool's advantage as he followed in Ryan Gravenberch's powerful effort from range to tap home the rebound, but he was then at fault as he put through his own net from another Bilbao corner, as Maroan Sannadi made first contact at the near post.
However, the Dutchman made amends, netting his second on 70 minutes as his shot squirmed in under Unai Simon.
There was still time for Salah to blaze a penalty over the top after Wataru Endo was bundled over in the box by Dani Vivian, but that did not trouble the scoreline in the end, as Slot's side held on for a second win of the afternoon.

Fabrizio Romano confirms Liverpool working on mega double transfer

Richard Hughes is working on a double transfer for Liverpool according to Fabrizio Romano. The Reds' sporting director is not resting on his laurels. As well as trying to get a deal over the line for Alexander Isak, Hughes is also trying to bring in two more recruits at least. 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the away range TODAY LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! Liverpool have broken their club record to sign Florian Wirtz, and paid hefty sums to bring in Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez. But that investment is not enough in order to replace some of the club's departed stars. Liverpool need to provide depth in the attacking and defensive areas. Particularly at centre-back, where currently Arne Slot has just three senior options to choose from, one of them is injured in Joe Gomez. Hughes still has just less than three weeks to get deals over the line and according to Romano he's currently working on a double transfer that could be mega business from him yet again. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range Given Liverpool's depth in the centre-back department, they probably need not just one but two new arrivals this summer. They were already a man short last season, and that's before Jarell Quansah departed for pastures new. So there is a need here to improve that department and Hughes is working on what could be a mega double deal according to Fabrizio Romano. Posting on his X account, Romano confirmed that Liverpool are working on a deal to sign both Marc Guehi and Giovanni Leoni. While previously others have suggested it's one or the other, Romano here has clarified that Liverpool want to sign both, which means there is the potential for an incredible double deal.

Barcelona summer signing reflects on his adaptation and changes he has experienced – ‘It is very intense'

Marcus Rashford has spoken about his first impressions as a Barcelona player, giving fans an insight into how he is adapting to life at his new club. In an interview with the programme The Rest Is Football, hosted by Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, and Micah Richards, the summer signing expressed his excitement at joining a young, hungry team eager for success. Rashford revealed that the atmosphere within the squad has been a key highlight, praising the energy and style of play that defines the club. One name, in particular, stood out to him from the very beginning. 'Honestly, it is very refreshing to be able to play with these players and play football at their own tempo [rhythm] like Pedri, who I think is only 22 or 23 years old.' When asked about his objectives for the season, Rashford made it clear that team achievements take priority over personal milestones. 'I hope to have a good individual season, but if I have to choose between that and winning titles, choose to win titles.' Adapting to Barça's intensity While Rashford has settled in well, he also admitted that the intensity of Barcelona's training sessions has been a challenge. The pace and demands of the pre-season were further complicated by the weather conditions during the club's Asian tour. 'Here, it is very intense. It is difficult to explain, but the pre-season has been difficult; I was tired after every workout, and the weather also played a role. 'Running is not difficult; it is more about practising with the ball and maintaining a consistent level. In this sense, the intensity is more complex,' he noted. For Rashford, the first few weeks have been both exciting and demanding. As he adjusts to Hansi Flick's methods and forms connections with his new teammates, the forward will be eager to make his mark when the competitive season begins.
