Johor Immigration officer pleads not guilty to RM933,295 in money laundering charges
Nas Suffian Nasrun, 41, entered the plea before Judge Datuk Mohd Nasir Nordin after the charges were read to him separately.
According to the first charge, Nas Suffian is accused of directly engaging in money laundering transactions involving RM224,840, transferred from a man's account to his mother's bank account through 29 online transactions between Nov 1, 2023 and May 29, 2024.
He is also accused of receiving RM297,600 in proceeds from unlawful activities, transferred from the same individual's bank account to his personal account through 29 transactions between Oct 19, 2022 and Aug 8, 2024.
The man is also charged with transferring RM113,375 from his account to an account of another individual in 32 transactions between April 16, 2023 and November 2, 2023.
The accused is also charged with transferring RM209,080 from the bank account of a company he operates to his personal account through 55 online transactions between July 29, 2022 and July 1, 2024.
Under the fifth charge, he is accused of transferring RM88,400 from his mother's account to his own through 17 transactions between Nov 5, 2023 and Sept 23, 2024. All five offences are alleged to have been committed at two bank branches in Kota Damansara and Kajang.
The first charge is framed under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Act 613) and the remaining charges under Section 4(1)(b) of the same Act.
The accused is facing a maximum 15-year prison term and a fine of not less than five times the amount of the laundered money, the value of the proceeds from unlawful activities at the time the offence was committed, or RM5 million, whichever is higher.
Deputy Public Prosecutor of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Siti Amirah Muhammad Ali, proposed bail at RM800,000 with additional conditions imposed. However, defence lawyer Muhammad Zaim Rosli requested a lower amount, citing that his client has to support five school-going children.
The court then set bail at RM100,000 for all charges, with conditions, requiring the accused to report monthly to the MACC, surrender his passport and refrain from interfering with prosecution witnesses. The case has been fixed for mention on September 12. — Bernama

2 motorcyclists killed in Kota Tinggi accident

'The accident is believed to have occurred when both motorcycles crashed into the rear of the lorry. However, the case is still under investigation. 'The victims' bodies were taken to the Kota Tinggi Hospital, while the lorry driver has yet to be traced,' he said in a statement. 24 houses destroyed by fire in Tuaran
Firefighters from the Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu and Putatan fire and rescue stations were at the scene to put out the flames. Tuaran fire and rescue station chief Nor Amit said there were no reports of injuries. 'The fire station received a distress call at 3.34pm, and 24 firefighters, including those from the Kota Kinabalu and Putatan fire and rescue stations, were despatched to the scene. 'The team used water from fire rescue tenders and water tankers to put out the fire. They ended the operation at 10.38pm. The cause of the fire and losses are still under investigation,' he said in a statement today. The Tuaran district disaster management committee secretariat said 114 victims from 35 families were affected by the fire. 'A temporary relief centre was opened at Dewan Seri Sulaman here at 7pm. The civil defence force is still collecting information on the victims,' it said statement.

Home Ministry awaits AKPS chief's full report on officers nabbed by MACC over ‘flying passport' bribes
KULIM, July 27 — The Home Ministry is still awaiting a full report on the investigation into enforcement officers suspected of abetting a 'flying passport' syndicate while on duty at the country's border checkpoints. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the ministry will obtain a report from Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain. 'Let him (Shuhaily) handle it first… I believe we have placed the right person in the right position,' he told reporters after officiating the 53rd anniversary celebration of the People's Volunteer Corps (RELA) at Dataran Kulim here today. Yesterday, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested four enforcement officers suspected of receiving bribes of about RM3,000 for facilitating the 'flying passport' activity at the motorcycle entry zone checkpoint at the Johor-Singapore border. Two of them were detained by AKPS' Compliance Unit during an inspection at the counter yesterday, while two other officers were arrested for allegedly colluding in the operation. Meanwhile, Saifuddin Nasution said RELA members must equip themselves with new skills and enhance training to expand the scope of their functions. He stressed the need for a shift in RELA's core duties from the usual roles of traffic control, disaster response and managing public events. 'This shift aims to elevate RELA's role to include responsibilities in sensitive areas such as border control. 'Of course, RELA will not act alone. Its purpose is to complement and support existing enforcement agencies. The ministry sees potential for RELA to contribute further,' he said. Saifuddin Nasution said the ministry will continue to assess the needs of the department, particularly concerning the welfare of RELA personnel. — Bernama
