Trinity Rodman returns from injury, scores game-winning goal for Spirit in first game since April
The 23-year-old forward has been out since April while recovering from an ongoing back injury. But in an emotional return on Sunday, she played hero for the Washington Spirit, scoring a goal in stoppage to send the Spirit over the Portland Thorns.
Rodman came on in the 75th minute, earning a huge cheer from the crowd at Audi Field. And it didn't take long for her to make a difference: In the 92nd minute, Croix Bethune sent the ball to Rodman with wild back-leg pass, and Rodman smashed it home to send the Spirit ahead.
Rodman was immediately emotional after the goal, holding her hands to her face and wiping away tears before being rushed by her team.
That emotion continued after the game, as Rodman spoke on how the return felt following a long and frustrating recovery.
"That was just the hardest thing I've had to go through, with injury and everything," Rodman said postgame, while visibly emotional.
Rodman has only played in four games this season prior to Sunday, with her most recent appearance coming on April 12. But it's also been a while since Rodman was able to bury a goal like that: Sunday's goal was Rodman's first since Sept. 15, 2024.

NEW YORK (AP) — Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers said Tuesday night she thinks she has a pulled back muscle and will be taking 'day to day.' Bueckers, the No. 1 pick in the draft, left Tuesday night's game against the New York Liberty with 2:37 left in the third quarter and went to the locker room with tightness in her back. She said she stretched the back and received a massage gun treatment before returning to the bench at the start of the fourth and playing in the final period. She finished with 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists in an 85-76 loss. 'I was just dribbling the ball and just felt a tightness come along,' she said of the moment of the strain. 'It's day to day. I'm hoping it won't take me out. Just get some treatment, get some rest. 'I think it's just a pulled muscle. I felt a strain, felt it tighten, so am just getting it worked out.' Bueckers is averaging 18.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.5 assists in her rookie season. She leads a struggling Dallas team in points, assists, steals and blocks. ___ AP WNBA:

Another beatdown, this one from the A's, gives the Nats a sixth straight loss
Jacob Young leaped as high as his body would allow and extended his arm as far as biology would permit in an effort to keep his team from plunging into another inescapable first-inning hole Tuesday night. He had timed his route and his jump, doing almost everything the Washington Nationals would have needed him to do to stop Darell Hernaiz's home run from becoming just that.
