
PGI rolls out hybrid follow-up system for patients

Chandigarh: The PGI has rolled out a hybrid follow-up system for its patients, initially in a pilot phase. This innovative project, sanctioned by the Union ministry and spearheaded by PGI's telemedicine department, marks a first for any institute of national importance in India.
It offers patients the flexibility to choose between traditional in-person reviews and convenient online consultations.
Initially, three key departments were selected for this pilot programme — endocrinology, neurology, and nephrology. The initiative is set to expand to other departments across the institute once the pilot phase demonstrates its effectiveness.
The project, which received full approval from PGI, ensures that all medical records are meticulously captured within a dedicated app, clearly indicating whether a patient's consultation was conducted offline or online.
Crucially, if a doctor determines that an online consultation is insufficient, the patient can be seamlessly called in for a physical examination at the PGI. This intelligent system is expected to significantly reduce unnecessary travel time for patients and alleviate congestion within the institute.
To facilitate these virtual consultations, each participating department will be equipped with a dedicated room featuring high-bandwidth internet, an LED screen, and the eSanjeevani app.
Patients will be allotted specific time slots through this app, enabling them to connect with their doctors during their scheduled time. Patients who miss their assigned slot will have the option to re-book.
Upon a patient's initial treatment at PGI and subsequent call for a follow-up, they will be educated about the new app and guided on the registration process, allowing them to opt for either a physical or online follow-up for their next appointment.
While the tele follow-up system already commenced at the Sangrur centre of PGI, a faculty member said, "However, once the hospital information system 2 starts, things will become streamlined. But we can still start this project in pilot mode using the eSanjeevani app." He said, "The app can capture the medical records and also offers prescriptions which are signed by the doctor." Centre extends deadline for revised Schedule M implementation for small, medium pharmas
Mysuru: The Union govt has extended the deadline for implementing the revised Schedule M–Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)–for small and medium pharmaceutical enterprises (SMEs) with an annual turnover of Rs 250 crore or less, until the end of this year, said Khalid Ahmed Khan, deputy drug controller and president of the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), Karnataka state branch. He was speaking at the inauguration of a national conference on 'Enhancing Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance through Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)' and a special session on the Revamped Pharmaceutical Technology Upgradation Assistance Scheme. The event was organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) health committee in association with the department of pharmaceuticals, Union ministry of chemicals and fertilizers, JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (JSS AHER) and the IPA Mysuru branch, at the JSS College of Pharmacy on Wednesday. Khan noted that due to the financial burden involved in implementing the revised quality framework, MSME firms were granted time until Dec 2025 to comply. "Firms with turnover above Rs 250 crore, as well as all newly established plants, are required to adopt the revised Schedule M immediately. These guidelines are aligned with WHO and international standards and emphasise total quality management and robust pharmaceutical systems," he added. Khan stressed the importance of leadership and a quality-driven mindset in the pharmaceutical sector. "Even if you're not in a leadership position, you can influence those who are. Without quality, neither the industry nor its workforce can sustain," he said. Dr H Basavana Gowdappa, VC, JSS AHER, commended the department of pharmaceuticals for launching the RPTUAS and urged the industry to treat GMP not as a regulation but a fundamental responsibility. Amaresh Tumbagi, former drug controller of Karnataka, outlined the inspection mechanisms under the revised Schedule M and how regulatory processes have evolved. Dr Pramod Kumar TM, principal, JSS College of Pharmacy, provided insights into current industry regulations and compliance requirements. Jatin Nagpal, joint secretary, PHDCCI, Dharmendra Kumar Yadav, under secretary, department of pharmaceuticals, Yashwant Shinde, manager, SIDBI and Dr Savitha RS, secretary, IPA Mysuru local branch were also present.

Residents plan protest against privatisation of public healthcare in Mumbai M East ward
Mumbai: Amid growing opposition to the privatisation of public healthcare in Mumbai's M East ward, residents gathered with health activists and union members on Wednesday to plan their way out of it. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The community meeting, which drew residents from neighbourhoods like Sathe Nagar, Baiganwadi, and Buddha Nagar in Mankhurd and Govandi, concluded with plans to mobilise around 200 people to protest at the ward office and meet M East Ward officials by the end of the month. Jyoti Chavan, from Baiganwadi, said her grandmother was moved from Shatabdi Hospital to Rajawadi after a stroke because Shatabdi's ICU was shut. "Shatabdi is the closest to me, why do I need to run from one hospital to the other?" she asked. Others, like Buddha Nagar's Lila Sable, said that public hospitals, despite their issues, are the only affordable option for most. BMC decided to go ahead with a public-private partnership (PPP) model in M East Ward, even after scrapping similar plans elsewhere due to pressure from Union minister Piyush Goyal. The plan covers two new hospitals: a 580-bed teaching hospital on the Shatabdi campus and the 410-bed Lallubhai Compound Hospital. Of the latter, only 150 beds will remain under BMC control. There have been insufficient bidders so far to move ahead with the process. These facilities were promised as fully public services to the ward's 8 lakh residents, who have an average monthly income of Rs 7,800. Sanjana Athavle from Mumbai Mahapalika Nurses Union said, "We were promised multi-specialty public care. Instead, it's going the way of Seven Hills Hospital, where the municipal part has almost disappeared." "In the 20 projects involving private players, we've seen consistent breakdowns in service," said JSA co-convenor Dr Abhay Shukla. Activists from Jan Haq Sangharsh Samiti and Revolutionary Workers Party of India are now working to form a broader coalition to demand the scrapping of PPP, filled vacancies in existing hospitals, and adequate medicine stocks. There will be a larger public hearing with the residents where further grievances will be taken into consideration. Samajwadi Party's Mumbai and state president, MLA Abu Azmi, who represents Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar, earlier told TOI, "We support the PPP initiative. Bringing private partnership will help run the hospital efficiently; they know how to manage large facilities. The existing BMC or govt hospitals are frequently in a bad state."
