Sheffield United ease past Bristol City and into Championship play-off final by record margin
Sheffield United are one win away from ending their play-off hoodoo after booking their place in the Sky Bet Championship final with a record-breaking semi-final demolition of Bristol City.
The Blades will meet Sunderland or Coventry at Wembley after a 6-0 aggregate victory over the Robins – the biggest winning margin in Championship play-off semi-final history.
After doing the heavy lifting in Thursday's first leg at Ashton Gate, where they won 3-0, they finished the job on home soil thanks to goals from Kieffer Moore, Gus Hamer and Callum O'Hare.
They will be hoping it is 10th time lucky, having lost in their previous nine play-off encounters, which has included three Championship finals.
None of those have been under boss Chris Wilder, though, and he is eyeing a third promotion with his boyhood club.
For long parts of the season it looked like the Blades would go up automatically until Leeds and Burnley ran away with it, but they regrouped well in time for the play-off semi-finals and can now turn their attention to Wembley in 12 days time.
This was a bridge too far for Bristol City and they were unable to repair the damage from Thursday's first leg against a team they finished 22 points behind in the league.
The Robins had no option other than to go for it in the early stages as they tried to make inroads to their first-leg deficit.
George Earthy flashed an effort just wide in just the second minute before Republic of Ireland midfielder Jason Knight tested goalkeeper Michael Cooper with a low effort from distance.
But the Blades held firm and as the first half wore on they began to take control.
In the 34th minute Andre Brooks could not connect with Hamer's cross while Harrison Burrows saw a deflected effort fizz just wide.
And a promising spell of pressure was rewarded when the hosts went in front to well and truly kill the tie.
Moore was the man who inflicted the damage, heading Burrows' corner past Irish-qualified Max O'Leary from close range.
Hamer made it 2-0 on the night shortly as a clever corner routine saw him with time and space on the edge of the area, with his shot deflecting off Haydon Roberts.
Tyrese Campbell almost made it 3-0 shortly after coming off the bench when he fizzed an effort just wide and as the Blades wanted to make it a night to remember.
Another substitute, O'Hare, got on the scoresheet in the 83rd minute with a fine goal. Campbell burst down the left, Burrows cleverly stepped over his cross, allowing O'Hare to sweep home.
It meant the night ended in celebration for the Blades, who paid an emotional tribute to their former player George Baldock, following his tragic death in October after drowning in a swimming pool in Greece.

Liverpool are about to pass the €230million mark in player sales this summer with teenage winger Ben Doak set to complete a move to Bournemouth. The 19-year-old is on the verge of finalising his transfer to the south coast in a €29m deal. Doak, signed from Celtic in 2022 for €700,000, has made 10 appearances for Liverpool in his first two years and spent the whole of last campaign on loan at Championship side Middlesbrough, where he scored three goals in 24 games. He follows Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher and Jarell Quansah out of the club this summer, with the income from those sales going a long way to offset a transfer spend of nearly €350m. That figure could go higher with Liverpool still retaining an interest in Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi and Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, which would cost them at least another €173m. However, there are likely to be more departures from Anfield with Kostas Tsimikas – now third-choice left-back after the arrival of Milos Kerkez and not in the squad for Friday's win over Bournemouth – linked with Nottingham Forest. Midfielder Harvey Elliott remains in talks with RB Leipzig, who are likely to make a formal move once Chelsea target Xavi Simons' future is decided. West Ham were understood to also be interested in the England Under-21 international but the Bundesliga is currently the most attractive option for him. Nottingham Forest have taken their summer spending close to €115m in the space of three days with striker Arnaud Kalimuendo following Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee to the City Ground. Kalimuendo has signed a five-year deal after Forest concluded a deal with Rennes to sign the 23-year-old striker, who scored 18 goals for the Ligue 1 side last season, in a deal worth €29m. The deal comes after a weekend that had already seen Forest spend a club record €43.5m to sign Hutchinson from Ipswich and €35m to get midfielder McAtee from Manchester City. Kalimuendo is primarily a central striker but can also play in the wide positions. "When I heard about the interest from Forest, I was honoured," Kalimuendo said. "This is a proud moment for me, joining a team who had a strong season last year and a club with great history. "I'm ready for the challenge, and I arrive here with good experience. I had a good season last year with goals and assists but I want more and want to reach a new level here. "I can't wait to play in the Premier League, and to play at the City Ground. I watched games from last season and it's clear the fans create a beautiful atmosphere. I'm excited to see them and impatient to get started." 'I haven't reached my potential' - Eddie Dunbar on move to Swiss Q36.5 Procycling
Double Vuelta a España stage winner Eddie Dunbar has confirmed a move to Swiss team Q36.5 Procycling on a two-year contract and believes he can step up to a new level in the period. The Corkman announced the move in a team statement on Monday and has made clear that the biggest races in the sport are his target. "Grand Tours suit me well because I always get better towards the end. I absorb the workload of a three-week race well," he said. "There have been glimpses of what I can do but due to crashes and illness I haven't reached my full potential there yet. That's something for the next two years." Dunbar will move across at the end of the season from his current Jayco AlUla outfit. He had notched up some big results during his three years with the squad, including his two stage wins at last year's Vuelta a España, as well as seventh overall in the 2023 Giro d'Italia. However, his progress has been hampered by several falls, including one which saw him retire from his debut Tour de France this year. The 28-year-old had impressed during the opening week of that race, taking fourth on stage 6 to Vire Normandie. Dunbar's move will see him work with the Belgian Kurt Bogaerts, the head of performance at Q36.5 Procycling. Bogaerts has a long history with Irish cycling, running the Sean Kelly team for many years and also being the team manager for the Irish squad at major events. He was also part of the management structure at the Ineos Grenadiers team when Dunbar competed there. "Eddie is a very interesting rider I know well. He can climb, time trial and is punchy by nature," Bogaerts said on Monday. "He has already shown great things in smaller stage races but also won two stages in the Vuelta and has ridden in support of team leaders often too. He is versatile and quite adept to hard races. I am happy he will be with us." The team already has an Irish rider: national champion Rory Townsend is part of the line-up, and took a career-best result on Sunday when he won the Hamburg Classic in Germany. Also on the squad is the Briton Tom Pidcock, who came on board at the start of the season as its new leader. Dunbar will ride in support of Pidcock in some races, but will also get his own opportunities. "The team has already done some big races, and I hope I will play my part in the future ones," he said. "Winning a race is never easy but when there is an opportunity, I am ready to take my chance. "The Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team is obviously a team on the up which is a good sign. They are really competitive in the races, take it on even if they don't win and create a good racing atmosphere riding as one. When Kurt Bogaerts - who I know well from my time at Ineos - joined, my interest was sparked even more. I know how he works. "I also spoke to [owner] Doug Ryder on how the team is going and what they expect. In Tom they have a clear leader which is always good for any team, so it seems like a good moment now to join with my knowledge and experience." Dunbar was lucky to dodge fractures in his stage 7 crash at the Tour de France, and returned to racing earlier this month in the Arctic Race of Norway. He is due to line out in the Vuelta a España, which begins in Turin in Italy on Saturday. That will be one of his final outings with the Jayco AlUla team, with Dunbar then likely to take part in training camps with his new squad later this year. The Banteer rider will be looking forward to that, and so too is Bogaerts. He emphasised Dunbar's talent but also his character, something which will help him get established with the squad. "Recruitment is not only about values and results on the bike but also off the bike," Bogaerts said. "What kind of personality does a rider have? In Eddie we have a rider who fits well in the group, is valued and loved. "He has huge potential in Grand Tours which he has already shown, and I think we can make him even better."
