Hong Kong exchange reports jump of nearly 40% in first-half profit

Business Times14 hours ago
[HONG KONG] Hong Kong's stock exchange operator said on Wednesday (Aug 20) that its first half profit reached HK$8.5 billion (S$1.4 billion), up almost 40 per cent, driven by a sharp increase in daily stock trading and a revived listings market. The revenue of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) reached HK$14.1 billion in the past six months, up 33 per cent on the year, it said in a stock exchange filing. It declared an interim dividend of HK$6, up from HK$4.36 last year, while earnings per share rose to HK$6.74 from HK$4.84. HKEX said that its average daily equities turnover, or buying and selling of stocks, rose 122 per cent in the half to be worth HK$222.8 billion. South-bound stock trading, where mainland investors trade Hong Kong shares, was up nearly 200 per cent. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index is up almost 25 per cent year to date, making it one of the world's best-performing major equities markets. Analysts say the surge in the benchmark index has been driven by foreign investors' return to buying Chinese stocks, despite US President Donald Trump's April tariffs package and geopolitical tension between the two countries. WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump has bought more than US$100 million (S$128 million) in company, state and municipal bonds since taking office in January, according to new disclosures which shed further light on the vast holdings of America's billionaire president. The forms, posted online on Aug 19, show the Republican former real estate mogul made more than 600 financial purchases since Jan 21, the day after he was inaugurated for his second term in the White House. The Aug 12 filing from the US Office of Government Ethics does not list exact amounts for each purchase, only giving a broad range. They include corporate bonds from Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, and Wells Fargo, as well as Meta, Qualcomm, The Home Depot, T-Mobile USA and UnitedHealth Group. Other debt purchases include various bonds issued by cities, states, counties and school districts as well as gas districts, and other issuers. The holdings cover sectors that could benefit from US policy shifts under his administration, such as financial deregulation. The White House on Aug 20 did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. His annual disclosure form filed in June showed his income from various sources still ultimately accrues to the president - something that has opened him up to accusations of conflicts of interest. In that disclosure, which appeared to cover the 2024 calendar year, Mr Trump reported more than US$600 million in income from cryptocurrencies, golf properties, licensing and other ventures. It also showed the president's push into crypto had added substantially to his wealth. Overall, the president reported assets worth at least US$1.6 billion, according to a Reuters calculation at the time. REUTERS

Michel Euler/Pool via REUTERS/File Photo SAO PAULO/PARIS - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva spoke by phone on Wednesday with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron and discussed U.S. tariffs and the Mercosur-European Union trade deal, Brazil's government said in a statement. Lula voiced his opposition to tariffs on Brazilian goods, and the two leaders committed to concluding negotiations on the long-awaited deal between the South American bloc and the EU by the end of the year, the statement said. Lula had previously said he was hopeful the two parties would be able to finalize the deal in the second half, when his country holds the rotating presidency of Mercosur, which also includes Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The trade pact was agreed in principle in December, but has faced pushback from countries such as France, which says the deal's terms would harm its agricultural sector. In a post on X, Macron said he reiterated to Lula his readiness for an "ambitious" EU-Mercosur agreement, "as long as it safeguards the interests of our French and European agriculture, and serves our respective economies." "We also spoke at length about economic issues, particularly tariffs, as well as our bilateral cooperation in the fields of defense and transport," Macron added. REUTERS

US Senator Sanders favors Trump plan to take stake in Intel, others

WASHINGTON :Liberal U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders on Wednesday threw his support behind President Donald Trump's plan to convert U.S. grants to chipmakers, including $10.9 billion for Intel, into government stakes in the companies. "If microchip companies make a profit from the generous grants they receive from the federal government, the taxpayers of America have a right to a reasonable return on that investment," Sanders, an Independent who caucuses with Democrats, said in a statement to Reuters. The awards were part of the 2022 Chips and Science Act, which sought to lure chip production away from Asia and boost American domestic semiconductor output with $39 billion in subsidies. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is looking into the government taking equity stakes in Intel and other chipmakers in exchange for the grants, sources told Reuters on Tuesday.
