Wallet travelled 150,000 miles under Ford Edge's bonnet after it vanished 10 years ago

Daily Mirror15 hours ago
Richard Guilford lost his tri-fold leather wallet — stuffed with $15, his driver's licence and work ID — had turned up under the bonnet of a car in a repair shop in Lake Crystal, Minnesota
A retired automotive employee was staggered after a wallet he lost more than 10 years ago turned up - having travelled more than 150,000 miles away under the bonnet of a car he had been working on.

Richard Guilford lost his tri-fold wallet when he was assembling cars at a Ford factory in late 2014. He suspected it fell out of his shirt pocket and, though Richard searched 30 to 40 cars and his co-workers looked at dozens more, the leather accessory wasn't found.

But last month, Richard received a message from a stranger on Facebook, claiming he had discovered the wallet — complete with the $15 (approximately £10), driver's licence, work ID and gift cards worth $275 (£200) inside - beside the engine of a Ford Edge. Chad Volk, a mechanic in Lake Crystal, Minnesota, described the find as "crazy" and was delighted to be able to post it to Richard, who lives some 700 miles away in Petersburg, Michigan.

The Ford Edge, which a customer had left at Chad's repair shop, had 151,000 miles on the clock, all of which completed with the wallet wedged between the transmission and the air filter box.
Speaking yesterday, Richard, 56, said: "It restores your faith in humanity that people will say, 'Hey, you lost this, I found this, I'm going to get it back to you'. Chad noticed Richard's Facebook profile listed his time at Ford, a role from which he retired only last year. Chad messaged a photo of the wallet and included the driver's licence.
Richard, who has two sons, continued: "The amazing part to me was it was so protected. Think about this: 11 years, rain, snow. It was in Minnesota, for crying out loud. It was in Arizona when it was bought. Think about how hot a transmission gets in Arizona driving down the road. That's incredible."
The dad said he will now treasure the wallet, which was a Christmas present in the early 2010s. The majority of the gift cards were for Cabela's, an outdoor retailer, which said they remain valid. Richard, a part-time auctioneer, also had lottery tickets in the wallet, but the numbers had worn away in the decade since he bought them.
"I'm going to put everything back in it and leave it just like it is, and it's gonna sit at the house in the china cabinet and that's for my kids. They can tell my great-grandkids about it. We're big into stories. I like tellin' stories. That's just who I am," said the retired automotive worker.
Yet Richard, known as "Big Red" during his time at Ford due to his red-tinged beard, had long forgotten about the wallet years before Chad's message arrived on social media. Since the discovery though, a Ford spokesperson described it as "a repair that's right on the money," adding: "Can you imagine the odds?"

Israeli minister confronts long-imprisoned Palestinian leader face to face

Marwan Barghouti is serving five life sentences after being convicted of involvement in attacks at the height of the Palestinian uprising, or intifada, in the early 2000s. Polls consistently show he is the most popular Palestinian leader. He has rarely been seen since his arrest more than two decades ago. It was unclear when the video was taken, but it shows national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, known for staging provocative encounters with Palestinians, telling Barghouti that he will 'not win'. 'Anyone who murders children, who murders women, we will wipe them out,' Mr Ben-Gvir said. Mr Ben-Gvir's spokesman confirmed the visit and the video's authenticity, but denied that the minister was threatening Barghouti. Barghouti, now in his mid-60s, was a senior leader in President Mahmoud Abbas's secular Fatah movement during the intifada. Many Palestinians see him as a natural successor to the ageing and unpopular leader of the Palestinian Authority, which administers parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Israel considers him a terrorist and has shown no sign it would release him. Hamas has demanded his release in exchange for hostages taken in the October 7 2023 attack that triggered the war in the Gaza Strip. In a Facebook post, Barghouti's wife said she could not recognise her husband, who appeared frail in the video. Still, she said after watching the video, he remained connected to the Palestinian people. 'Perhaps a part of me does not want to acknowledge everything that your face and body shows, and what you and the prisoners have been through,' wrote Fadwa Al Barghouthi, who spells their last name differently in English. Israeli officials say they have reduced the conditions under which Palestinians are held to the bare minimum allowed under Israeli and international law. Many detainees released as part of a ceasefire in Gaza earlier this year appeared gaunt and ill, and some were taken for immediate medical treatment.

Ford Offers Compelling 2025 Escape PHEV Lease Deal For August

The Nismo costs less and has more power than the closest Tahoe. Global EV sales rose 21% in July, with China's slowdown offset by big gains in Europe. Analysts expect China to rebound next month as subsidies return. An efficient choice gets even more enticing The Ford Escape has carved out a place in the crowded compact SUV segment by offering a blend of practicality, comfort, and tech. In its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) form, it adds the benefit of electric-only driving for short trips while keeping the gas engine for longer journeys — an attractive middle ground for drivers not ready to commit fully to an EV. Over the years, the Escape has evolved from a boxy, truck-like runabout into a sleek, city-friendly SUV with the latest in driver-assist features and infotainment tech. It's a formula that has kept it competitive against rivals like the Toyota RAV4 Prime, Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid, and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. This month, Ford is pairing that efficiency with a lease offer designed to catch the attention of fuel-conscious shoppers. August lease offer makes the PHEV even more approachable Right now, Ford is offering the 2025 Escape Plug-in Hybrid for $417 per month for 48 months, with 10,500 miles annually and $4,307 due at signing. The deal waives the security deposit, though taxes, title, and license fees are extra. Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid — Source: Ford While the 48-month term is longer than some competing offers, the PHEV's ability to handle most short commutes on electric power alone could help drivers save significantly on fuel over the life of the lease. For buyers cross-shopping plug-in rivals, that could tip the scales toward the Escape. What's new for the 2025 Escape PHEV The 2025 Escape PHEV carries forward much of the refreshed design introduced recently, with its sculpted front end, sharp LED lighting, and clean interior layout. Inside, buyers get an available 13.2-inch touchscreen running Ford's SYNC 4 system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and standard Ford Co-Pilot360 driver-assist features. 2025 Ford Escape — Source: Ford The plug-in hybrid powertrain pairs a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder with an electric motor for a combined 210 horsepower. More importantly for many shoppers, it offers an EPA-estimated 37 miles of electric-only range, enough to cover most daily errands without using a drop of gas. When longer trips call, the gas engine kicks in seamlessly, eliminating range anxiety. Why the Escape PHEV is still a smart pick Ford Escape — Source: Ford Beyond efficiency, the Escape PHEV offers a smooth, quiet ride, a well-trimmed cabin, and practical cargo space for its size. It's one of the few compact plug-in hybrids with front-wheel drive as standard, which helps maximize range and efficiency. Ford's broad dealership network and included warranty coverage make ownership straightforward, and the PHEV's mix of electric and gas power keeps it flexible for any driving scenario. Final thoughts With its blend of everyday practicality, electric-only commuting capability, and competitive lease pricing, the 2025 Ford Escape PHEV makes a strong case for itself in the plug-in SUV market. August's offer only adds to its appeal, giving shoppers a timely reason to consider this efficient, well-rounded compact SUV. *Disclaimer: This article is provided for informational purposes only.
