UAE: Gold jewellery sales to pick up slightly as summer travel season begins

Gold and jewellery sales are expected to pick up ahead of the summer holidays, as residents purchase gold jewellery as gifts, wedding presents, or to mark personal milestones when they travel back to their home country. However, given the reduced price arbitrage between the UAE and certain Asian countries, the trend is expected to be muted, according to jewellers in Dubai. A large number of families travel for vacations during the two-month summer break to their home countries, spending a significant amount of their budget on gifts, including gold and diamond jewellery. Local jewellers said they cater to this demand by offering lightweight, travel-friendly designs, customised gifting solutions and attractive seasonal offers tailored for outbound travellers. 'The onset of summer vacation and the subsequent travel plans of residents always bring with increased sales in jewellery. With expats planning to travel to their home countries, we see an increased demand for mostly lightweight articles that are an ideal gifting choice,' said Shamlal Ahamed, managing director for international operations at Malabar Gold & Diamonds. 'We do see a noticeable uptick in jewellery purchases during the summer months — especially among expatriates who travel home. Many choose to buy gold jewellery before flying out as gifts, wedding presents, or to mark personal milestones back home,' Joyalukkas said in a statement. 'Gold from Dubai is still widely considered a symbol of quality and purity; furthermore, buying here offers price advantages and design variety. Whether it's a pair of elegant bangles for a mother, a solitaire for a sibling, a gold chain as a cherished keepsake or ornaments for an upcoming wedding - these purchases often carry deep emotional value beyond the price tag,' said the statement. Echoing his industry peers, Anuraag Sinha, managing director of Liali Jewellery, added that sales often pick up during summer in Dubai despite the heat as many residents buy gold or diamond jewellery as gifts for family before travelling to their home countries. In addition, he said the inflow of tourists from the GCC, Dubai Summer Surprises and community events like weddings and aggressive discounts by jewellers boost sales. Aditya Singh, head of international jewellery business at Titan Company, said there has been a trend in past years where Indian and Asian customers, before travelling to their home countries, used to buy gold for their families. 'However, the trend is expected to be muted, given that the price arbitrage has reduced between the countries. Many people also take vacations during the summer period, and therefore, jewellery sales tend to become muted. Fewer tourists coming to Dubai during summer months also have an impact on sales,' added Singh. However, Dubai has been promoting the Dubai Summer Surprises offer period during July and August, making it a good time to buy jewellery for those looking for good bargains, he added.

Omani fund replaces Russia's Alrosa in Angolan diamond miner Catoca

A subsidiary of Oman's sovereign wealth fund has replaced sanctions-hit Russian firm Alrosa as a shareholder in Angola's state-controlled diamond miner Catoca, according to the shareholder structure on Catoca's website. Angola had been under pressure to cease its long-standing partnership with the Russian state-controlled Alrosa, the world's largest producer of rough diamonds by volume, since 2022 when the West imposed sanctions on Alrosa for Moscow's role in the conflict in Ukraine. Catoca's shareholder structure showed that Endiama EP, Angola's national diamond company, owns 59% of Catoca, with Taadeen holding the remaining 41%, which used to be held by Alrosa. The Oman Investment Authority did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Alrosa confirmed that it had exited the shareholding, but provided no further details. Angola's Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, said the deal had been formalised on May 26. In November, Angola said having sanctions-hit Alrosa as a shareholder in the Angolan diamond miner was affecting "Angola's credibility in the international diamond market". Sharjah launches proactive plan for 5,600 trips during Eid Al Adha holiday

The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has put together a special plan for the upcoming Eid Al Adha holiday. This initiative is aimed at making sure travellers can enjoy comfortable and safe transportation as they celebrate the Eid. With an increase in people wanting to travel during this festive time, the SRTA is stepping up its services to ensure everyone can move smoothly between different areas in Sharjah and beyond. Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, the head of the SRTA, highlighted the importance of being well-prepared during holidays. He noted that during the Eid holiday in 2025, which runs from June 5 to 8, there will be a noticeable rise in public transport users. To handle this, the SRTA has made plans to operate 180 buses on various routes, aiming to complete around 5,600 trips over the four days. During peak times, buses will come every 5 minutes instead of the usual 45-minute wait. This means shorter waiting times and more convenience for everyone traveling. The authority is committed to making travel easy for people visiting family or exploring popular destinations, both within the emirate and outside it. They are also increasing staff at busy bus stations, especially the Jubail Bus Station, which will be open from early morning until late at night to accommodate the larger number of passengers expected during this busy holiday. The Authority has improved bus services in Sharjah City for the Eid holiday, making travel easier for everyone. They are running a total of 1,144 bus trips each day across 12 different routes, using 104 buses that connect to 543 stops around the city. During the Eid Al Adha holiday, there will be a special boat service operating between Sharjah and Dubai. Abdul Aziz Al Jarwan, who is in charge of transport at the local authority, announced that there will be four daily trips. These boats will leave from the Aquarium Station in Sharjah and arrive at Al Ghubaiba Station in Dubai, working together with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority. Al Jarwan shared that the Authority is working closely with the Omani transport company, Mwasalat, to run international route 203. This route connects Sharjah with Muscat, the capital of Oman, and offers two flights each day. This service is expected to encourage tourism between the two countries, especially during the Eid holidays. Passengers can board at Jubail station and travel to Al Athaiba station, making stops along the way. Tickets can be purchased online through Mwasalat Oman's website or at their service points. WAM
