Bus attacked after Tripura girl's ‘molestation'

Time of India6 hours ago
Agartala: The Sepahijala district administration clamped Section 163 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) for 24 hours after a group of tribals attacked a bus in which an 18-year-old girl was allegedly molested by a co-passenger on Tuesday night.
The girl, currently undergoing an air hostess training in Guwahati, was returning home from Agartala when the incident took place.
The girl told police that the accused got down in Bishalgarh and thereafter she informed her neighbours. Following this, agitated tribals, led by former militant leader and BJP's ally in the state govt, Tipra Motha leader Soren Debbarma, allegedly ransacked the bus and assaulted passengers in the presence of police.
Several other vehicles and shops in the nearby market were also ransacked. SP (Sepahijala) Bijoy Debbarma, along with his police team, was allegedly present nearby during the vandalism.
Prabir Bhowmik, a passenger travelling in the same bus, said, "We sought help from police standing in the market to rescue us but they didn't respond. We were confined inside the bus for almost three hours. They vandalised the bus, assaulted us, and attacked a few shops and the people who attempted to stop the vandalism.

They neither prevented the attackers, nor used any force to control the situation."
He alleged that police intervened only after the attack stopped and shifted at least seven injured persons to a local hospital.
Police said there has been no further escalation so far. The statement of the girl, who has been admitted to a local hospital, has been recorded and an investigation has been launched.
Meanwhile, Amra Bangalee, a platform of non-tribals, alleged that it was a pre-planned event aimed at inciting violence between two communities.
They demanded an inquiry into the roles of police and the girl, who had not raised an alarm till the accused left the bus.
"Without informing police and bus staff, why did she call her community people to assemble in Bishramganj? Does it not indicate something fishy to create communal tension ahead of Independence Day celebrations? Even if she called her friends or relatives, how did Tipra Motha leaders get into the scene and attack all non-tribals? These need to be answered clearly," said Amra Bangalee state secretary Gouranga Rudrapal.

Fake ED officers rob trader of Rs 70 lakh, gold

1 2 Vijayawada: In a shocking case of impersonation and organised robbery, four individuals — two of them dressed in police uniform — allegedly posed as Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials and fled with Rs 70 lakh in cash and some quantity of raw gold from a jeweller near Medikonduru on Sunday. The incident came to light after the trader lodged a formal complaint with the local police. According to Medikonduru circle inspector Nagul Meera, the complainant, Mani Jagadeesh, is a resident of Guntupalli in Ibrahimpatnam mandal. He is a recent entrepreneur, who opened a gold and silver testing shop named Sri Swami Samartha Gold & Silver Testing Centre in Vijayawada last month. Prior to this, Jagadeesh worked at a similar shop in Rajamahendravaram, where he came in contact with a person named Ranjith Maruthi Peta. Around 15 days ago, Ranjith contacted Jagadeesh and informed him about the availability of raw gold at Rs 5,000 per gram. Acting on the offer, Jagadeesh purchased five grams of raw gold through an unidentified person, paying Rs 25,000. Satisfied with the initial transaction, Jagadeesh later decided to procure two kilograms of raw gold at Rs 58 lakh per kilogram. For this larger deal, Jagadeesh, along with his friend Praveen from Kakinada, travelled to Rajamahendravaram. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Jolie-Pitt Family Shows Support For Shiloh's Change Drivepedia Undo There, they agreed to pay Rs 70 lakh initially and finalise the remaining payment later. Jagadeesh's car was intercepted on the outskirts of Medikonduru by people in another vehicle. Four individuals, including two dressed as police officers, confronted the group. Claiming to be ED officials, the impersonators threatened the victims and forcibly took away Rs 70 lakh in cash along with the raw gold that was in Jagadeesh's possession. Following the incident, Jagadeesh approached the local police on Monday and filed a formal complaint. He also reported that Ranjith Maruthi Peta, who facilitated the deal, since went missing and was untraceable. Kharar realtor Ranjeet Singh Gill seeks anticipatory bail after Punjab VB raids, alleges political vendetta

Chandigarh: Apprehending arrest by Punjab Police, Kharar-based realtor Ranjeet Singh Gill approached the Punjab and Haryana high court on Wednesday to seek anticipatory bail. After hearing his plea, a single bench headed by Justice Aaradhana Sawhney referred the matter to the chief justice for directions after the Punjab govt informed the court that the matter is connected with an already pending petition filed by former minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia. A separate bench is hearing all cases that are related to the former and sitting MPs and MLAs. In his petition, Gill claimed that he was falsely and maliciously targeted by the vigilance bureau (VB), Punjab, solely on account of his political affiliation. Immediately after formally joining the Bharatiya Janata Party on Aug 1, Gill said, he became the subject of a politically motivated action by the state machinery. It was contended that acting under the influence of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the VB procured search warrants in an arbitrary and clandestine manner, without issuing any summons, notice, or requisition as mandated under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Paperela Undo The court was informed that multiple raids were conducted on Aug 2 at four of the petitioner's properties, including his residence, yet no incriminating material was found. However, now the notices under Section 179 of BNSS (corresponding Section 160 CrPC) have been issued, whereby he was summoned as a witness. "The petitioner is neither named in any FIR nor linked to the case by way of any disclosure or evidence, and the jurisdictional authority of the Vigilance Bureau does not extend to him as he is not a public servant. The entire sequence of events demonstrates a clear abuse of process, malafide intent, and political vendetta aimed at coercing and humiliating the petitioner for exercising his constitutional right to political association under Article 19(1)(c) of the Constitution of India," his counsel submitted. On Aug 1, Gill joined BJP in a hurriedly called meeting with Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini at his residence. On Saturday, the bureau raided his residences.

Who is Sgt. Quornelius Radford— the Army soldier behind the Fort Stewart shooting that shocked America?

A typical workday at Fort Stewart, one of the largest U.S. Army installations in Georgia, turned into a shocking scene of violence on August 6, 2025. Sgt. Quornelius Radford , a 28-year-old Army logistics specialist, opened fire inside the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT) area, injuring five fellow soldiers. He was quickly subdued by others in the unit and taken into custody. While all five victims are expected to survive, many are still asking: Who is this soldier, and what led him to commit such a brutal act inside his own workplace? What do we know about Sgt. Within minutes, several soldiers responded swiftly by tackling Radford to the ground. He was in custody by 11:35 a.m., according to the U.S. Army's Public Affairs Office. A base-wide lockdown was issued at 11:04 a.m. and lifted gradually by early afternoon, with the 2nd ABCT complex staying secured for longer. Live Events Who were the victims and how are they now? Five soldiers were injured during the shooting. All were active-duty service members who served in the same unit as Radford. According to Fort Stewart officials, the wounded soldiers were given on-site emergency care before being transferred. Three soldiers required surgery Two were moved to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah The remaining were treated at Winn Army Community Hospital As of the latest update, all five were reported to be in stable condition and expected to recover. What could be the motive behind the shooting? Right now, investigators say they have no clear motive. The attack appears to have been targeted, but there's no confirmed information about prior conflicts or threats. The investigation is being jointly handled by the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and the FBI's Savannah field office. Military leaders are also examining Radford's personal history and mental health, although no official statement has been made linking the incident to any specific issues. What has the military and public response been like? Reactions from both military officials and public leaders were swift. The Army commended the quick action of the soldiers who disarmed Radford. President Donald Trump and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp were briefed shortly after the event. Kemp wrote on X (formerly Twitter), 'We are praying for the wounded and their families and deeply thankful for the fast action taken to secure the base.' Fort Stewart has also increased counseling support for soldiers and their families, and military leadership has promised a full review of safety protocols and mental health support services. Has Fort Stewart seen similar incidents in the past? Fort Stewart, home to the 3rd Infantry Division, is no stranger to tragic events, though shootings like this are rare. Earlier in 2025, the base had faced training-related fatalities and the loss of soldiers overseas, but this kind of internal attack marks one of the most serious security breaches in recent years. The shooting has raised concerns across military communities about stress, internal disputes, and the ease with which personal firearms can be brought onto military property. What happens next for Quornelius Radford? Sgt. Radford remains in military custody, and charges are pending. Once formal charges are filed, more information about the potential consequences he faces—including military court-martial or civilian charges—will be released. The Army has not confirmed whether he will face charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) or in civilian court, but legal action is expected soon. FAQs: Q1: Who is Sgt.
