Brazil nixes red World Cup jersey amid political outcry
The controversy emerged back in April in a press leak that the national side would don red shirts made by Nike for its away jersey in the tournament next year.
Red is the color of the Workers Party of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, while supporters of right-wing former president Jair Bolsonaro tend to wear Brazil's traditional colors of green and yellow at political rallies.
Samir Xaud, president of the Brazilian Football Federation, told SporTV Tuesday that he had ordered a halt to production of the red jerseys.
He said people's political persuasions got caught up in the debate over the away jersey color. The team's home jersey is yellow with green trim.
"Blue, yellow, green and white are the colors of our flag and these are the ones that must be used," said Xaud, adding he himself was against the idea of a red shirt, but not for political reasons.
Nike accepted the decision to halt production and began to make a blue shirt as the away jersey, said Xaud, who took over his post in May. Production of the red one began under his predecessor, Ednaldo Rodrigues.
When word of the red jersey first came out, renowned sports columnist Paulo Vinicius Coelho wrote that the decision showed a lack of "political sensitivity."
"Even more so because the party that has dressed politics up in yellow could confuse it with the color of another party," he wrote.

Springboks to play Japan at Wembley
Japan will play world champions South Africa in England for the first time since their remarkable victory over the 'Boks in the 2015 Rugby World Cup rugby union South Africa will play Japan at Wembley on November 1, the first time they have met in England since the Japanese recorded one of the greatest upsets in Rugby World Cup history in 2015. Japan, then as now coached by Eddie Jones, overcame the Springboks 34-32 in an absolute thriller of a match in Brighton. South Africa have gone on to beat Japan twice since then, both times in Japan, as well as being crowned world champions in 2019 and 2023 giving them a record four victories in the sport's quadrennial showpiece. Jones, who in between his stints as Japan handler had a rollercoaster spell with England losing to the 'Boks in the 2019 World Cup final but was fired in late 2022, said the "Miracle of Brighton" had been a game changer for the sport. "The game in Brighton 10 years ago changed rugby in Japan from being a minor sport to a boom sport," said Jones. "Playing against the Boks is the dream of every young Japanese player." His Springbok counterpart Rassie Erasmus said it was a most welcome challenge ahead of their traditional November clashes with northern hemisphere heavyweights. "We are delighted to be starting off our tour of the northern hemisphere with a match against Japan at the iconic Wembley Stadium," said Erasmus in a South Africa Rugby statement. "Especially ahead of a challenging tour which kicks off a week later with the first official test of the November window against France in Paris. The Brave Blossoms are renowned for playing fast, attacking, high-tempo rugby -– which has been prevalent in our last two encounters, before and during the Rugby World Cup in Japan in 2019." Wembley has hosted 11 rugby matches over the years, starting with England's 26-13 win over Canada in 1992. Wales hosted six games there, including their Five Nations matches in 1998 and 1999, while the old Cardiff Arms Park was being rebuilt. A revamped Wembley also featured a couple of games during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, though both lacked the drama of the Japan and Boks pool match. The last time the Boks played at Wembley was a 31-31 against the Barbarians draw in 2016. Erasmus's side will have already played in England ahead of the Japan match, as they face Argentina in the final round of the Rugby Championship at Twickenham on October 4. © 2025 AFP

Italian soccer coaches call for Israel to be suspended by UEFA and FIFA over Gaza war
FILE - Carabinieri (Italian paramilitary police) patrol ahead of the Nations League soccer match between Italy and Israel, outside the Bluenergy stadium in Udine, Italy, Monday, Oct. 14, 2024. (Andrea Bressanutti/LaPresse via AP, file) soccer By DANIELLA MATAR The Italian Soccer Coaches' Association is pushing for Israel to be suspended from international competition over the war in Gaza. Ahead of Italy's crucial World Cup qualifiers against Israel in the next two months, the AIAC says 'Israel must stop. Soccer must also take action.' The AIAC has written a formal letter to the Italian soccer federation, to be forwarded to European and world soccer's governing bodies, calling for Israel to be suspended. Gabriele Gravina, the president of the Italian soccer federation, is also senior vice president of UEFA. 'The AIAC Board of Directors unanimously believes that, given the daily massacres, which have also resulted in hundreds of deaths among managers, coaches, and athletes … it is legitimate, necessary, indeed a duty, to place at the center of federation talks the request, to be submitted to UEFA and FIFA, for the temporary exclusion of Israel from sporting competitions,' the letter concludes. 'Because the pain of the past cannot cloud anyone's conscience and humanity.' Italy is set to play Israel on neutral turf in Debrecen, Hungary on Sept. 8, before hosting the return match in Udine on Oct. 14. 'We could just focus on playing, looking the other way. But we believe that is not right,' AIAC vice president Giancarlo Camolese said. The Azzurri also played Israel in Udine last October in a Nations League match that saw protests before and during the game and intense security measures, including snipers on the roof of the stadium. Since then the situation has continued to deteriorate with the Palestinian death toll from the 22-month war passing 62,000 earlier this month and an ever-worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, which experts say is sliding into famine. The U.N. last week warned that starvation and malnutrition in the Palestinian territory are at their highest levels since the war began with the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, in which the militants abducted 251 people and killed around 1,200, mostly civilians.. 'The world is in flames. Many people like the Palestinians are suffering,' AIAC vice president Francesco Perondi said. 'Indifference is unacceptable.' Russian teams have been suspended by UEFA and FIFA since days after the full invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 because future opponents clearly said they would not play those games in international competitions. No team in a UEFA member federation has refused to play an Israeli opponent. The AIAC sent the letter after an unanimous vote by its board of directors. The association has around 18,000 members, consisting of coaches and technical staff at all levels of Italian soccer — from Serie A to amateur leagues. A spokesperson told The Associated Press that, while it did not consult all its members, 'the letter of appeal represents the widespread feelings present within the large community of Italian coaches.' © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. Brazilian goalkeeper Fabio claims world record for most games
Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio on Tuesday claimed the record for most competitive appearances in men's soccer when the Brazilian played for a 1,391st time. The 44-year-old on Saturday equaled the landmark held by former England stopper Peter Shilton and Fabio has now gone one better following a 2-0 win over Colombia's America de Cali at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. Fluminense and Brazilian media say Fabio now stands alone in soccer history, although neither FIFA nor regional body CONMEBOL has declared it a record. "Sometimes we don't realize the importance of such a significant achievement as breaking this record, which has stood for many years," said Fabio, who has spent his entire career in Brazil, following his clean sheet in the Copa Sudamericana last 16 second leg. The home fans chanted, "Fabio is the best goalkeeper in Brazil," and he received a commemorative plaque to mark the achievement. "No one plays so many matches without a level of professionalism like his," said Fluminense coach Renato Gaucho. "He'll undoubtedly continue to play for a long time. "It will be difficult for another player to surpass his record." Fabio won the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense in 2023 and was part of the side that reached the semifinals of the Club World Cup in the United States this summer. He made 976 appearances for Cruzeiro between 2005 and 2022, after playing 30 times for Uniao Bandeirante and another 150 games for Vasco da Gama. His record outing against America de Cali was his 235th match for Fluminense. Fabio began his career in 1997, the year that Shilton retired. The Englishman considers his total number of appearances to be 1,387, but Guinness World Records puts the number at 1,390.
