Shelbourne secure famous Europa League win in Croatia

Uefa Europa League (Third qualifying round, first leg)
HNK Rijeka 1
Shelbourne 2
GOALS FROM SAM Bone and John Martin saw Shelbourne stage a remarkable come from behind victory to record perhaps their greatest away night in Europe, stunning Croatian champions Rijeka in their own backyard on the Adriatic coast.
Ahead of this first leg, head coach Joey O'Brien spoke of there being no Plan B in talking up his side's ability to come and win the game.
And that they did, showing admirable organisation and shape under Rijeka's dominance of the ball and commendable composure and intent when they had it.
It's now very much all to play for ahead of the second leg at Tolka Park next Tuesday.
The rewards for getting through are huge. The winners advance to the Europa League play-off round with the parachute guarantee of Conference League league phase and its minimum €3.8 million prize fund.
Greek side PAOK or Wolfsberger of Austria await in the play-off round of the Europa League.
Defeat for the League of Ireland champions could see a repeat of their Champions League first round clash with Linfield in the Conference League play-offs, should the Irish League kingpins come through their third tier tie against Vikingur of the Faroe Islands.

O'Brien made five changes from last week's Champions League loss at Qarabag, setting up in a defensive 5-3-2 formation with Mipo Odubeko and Sean Boyd both starting in attack.
As expected, Rijeka enjoyed plenty of possession as they worked for openings early on before an injury to Boyd forced Shelbourne into an early change with Martin coming into the fray in a straight swap up top.
Despite their dominance of the ball, it was 22 minutes before the home side threatened, Amir Gojak's low drive comfortably held by Wessel Speel.
The well-positioned Speel ably dealt with a strike from Niko Jankovic before Shelbouren enjoyed their first spell of possession.
Rijeka finished the first 45 back on the front foot, creating their only clear opening of the half. Again it was Jankovic who got sight of goal, his low drive bringing a fine save down to his right from Speel.
But an unforced error from Speel would all but gift Rijeka the lead 11 minutes after the interval.
The recently signed on loan Dutch goalkeeper took a heavy touch from Bone's back pass and then tripped inrushing Congolese winger Merveic Ndockyt. The impressive Jankovic sent Speel the wrong way from 12 yards.
The lead lasted just two minute, however, as Shelbourne levelled with a terrific set-piece goal from their first corner of the game.
Kerr McInroy worked a one-two from the flag kick with Harry Wood to cross. James Norris nodded the ball back across goal where Bone arrived to head it over the line.

The game really having opened up now, Speel redeemed his error for the penalty with a superb tip-over save to deprive Simon Butic while, at the other end, Martin surged forward to rifle a shot just over the crossbar.
Shelbourne then silenced the home crowd with a brilliant winner on the night on 70 minutes.
Milan Mbeng fed Wood on the right whose arced cross had plenty of pace on it for the negligently marked Martin whose firm header found the top corner to the delight of the boisterous Shelbourne support in the caged away end.
Rijeka pressed for much of the remainder of the game as Shelbourne defended tenaciously, epitomised by a brave block by captain Paddy Barrett on a shot from Tiago Dantas.
Then came a late scare in stoppage time when a VAR penalty check was needed after a shot from Jankovic struck Bone's arm by his side. But when the Spanish referee blew his whistle it was for full-time.
HNK Rijeka: Zlomislic; Orec, Majstorovic (Husic, h-t), Radeljic, Devetak (Lasickas, h-t); Jankovic, Gojak (Menalo, 69), Dantas; Ndockyt, Juric (Cop, 69), Butic (Tanjov, 76).
Shelbourne: Speel; Mbeng (Gannon, 87), Bone, Barrett, Ledwidge, Norris; McInroy (Coyle, 87), Lunney, Wood (Chapman, 77); Odubeko (Kelly, h-t), Boyd (Martin, 19).
Referee: Ricardo de Burgos (Spain).

More Ill-discipline cost Ireland in World Cup warm-up defeat to Canada

Canada scored seven tries on their way to a 47-26 victory over Ireland in both sides' final Women's Rugby World Cup warm-up match at the Affidea Stadium. Ireland made 10 changes as they prepare for their first game of the tournament against Japan on August 24 but they were second best in Belfast. Canada raced into an early 14-0 lead as Florence Symonds and Justine Pelletier touched down under the posts. Canada's Daleaka Menin was then sent to the sin bin for high contact on Ivana Kiripati and they were made to pay when the hosts halved the deficit through Beibhinn Parsons' try in the corner. Beibhinn Parsons. Pic: Ramsey Cardy/Sportsfile Pelletier restored the 14-point lead for Canada before Ireland were reduced to 14 players when captain Neve Jones was shown yellow for conceding too many penalties. Menin barged over for a fourth try before Paige Farries helped make it 33-7 at the break. Ireland then began the second half on top as they camped themselves inside Canada's 22. However they were unable to convert that territory into scores with more ill discipline and poor execution. This lead to Julia Schell walking under the sticks to push Canada over the 40-mark after sloppy handling lead to the ball bobbling into her hands. Anna McGann of Ireland on her way to scoring her side's third try. Pic: Ramsey Cardy/Sportsfile Ireland still kept knocking on the Canadian line and they finally got their score through Anna McGann who scored out wide to get Ireland's second try of the day. She then helped herself to another try after a fantastic run through the heart of the Canadian defence and Parson scored a third unanswered try as it began to look like Ireland could creep back into the game with just over 10 minutes to go as the scores were 26-40. Prop Elena Perry came on to make her debut too as the ex-England International looked solid with the ball in hand, getting some nice carries as Ireland tried to mount a huge comeback. However it wasn't to be and it was the visitors that would get the final laugh as Sophie de Goede scored their seventh try of the day with the last play of the match, shortly after Stacey Flood was sin binned for a head collision with Canada Fly-Half Claire Gallagher. Speaking to the BBC post-match, Ireland co-captain Sam Monaghan was happy with how her team was able to turn things around following the disappointing first 40. Ireland's Sam Monaghan breaks past Tyson Beukeboom of Canada. Pic: INPHO/Ben Brady 'We know Canada are a physical team, they really brought it on to us in that first half. I think our discipline let us down in the first half, but we put ourselves into situations in this game that we needed to go forward. 'So I'm really proud of our second half performance, loads of work ons. We've had a big couple of weeks and I'm looking forward to the next few. 'I think we just needed to front up. You know, we need to be more physical. We didn't have much ball in the first half, so we needed to keep it and again, just being really clean around the ruck, our discipline going forward. But I think we really flipped that on its head in the second half. And as I said, I was really proud of the girls and they put in a serious shift.' Scott Bemand. Pic: INPHO/Ben Brady Suffering another two yellow cards today against Canada, exactly like they did when they played the Canadians last year in WXV1 didn't help Ireland's cause and Head Coach Scott Bemand echoed Monaghan's opinion that discipline cost them in that first half where they conceded five tries. 'There's probably a few things for us to fix. Probably the biggest is you at the momentum of the game, if you get on a run of penalties that can give them ins and Canada are a powerful team, athletic, powerful team and if you're giving them opportunities to get to your 22, it's going to be difficult to keep them out.' With the squad now to be named on Monday, it will be a nervy couple of days for a few players as they wait to find out if they'll represent Ireland at the World Cup. Monaghan said it will be hard to say goodbye to players who don't go to England. A view of the Ireland team ahead of the game in the dressing room. Pic: INPHO/Ben Brady 'I have to say, like everyone that has been involved has gotten us to this point. I wish everyone could get on the plane, but it's a squad effort and it's tough. I think we've become really connected as a group, so it makes it a lot more tough when the girls aren't on the plane. But hopefully we can do them proud over there.' It's all eyes towards the World Cup now for Ireland. Scott Bemand will announce his squad on Monday before the team travel to England where they'll be based just outside of Northampton where they'll play Japan on August 24 in their World Cup opener.

Athlone battle back to earn a draw at Dalymount

Athlone Town came from two goals down to rescue a point in a thriller at Dalymount as the country's form team hosted the reigning champions who were desperate to climb back to the summit. The home side had been ahead thanks to Katie Lovely and Alannah McEvoy but The Town showed their grit to comeback as a Kelly Brady goal just before the break and a late Roisin Molloy header meant the spoils were shared. A sun-soaked Dalymount made for perfect conditions as both teams came flying out of the traps. The dangerous Molloy fizzed a shot straight at Rachael Kelly with a couple of minutes gone, and quickly followed this up with a pin-point cross to Brady whose first-time goal-bound volley was brilliantly blocked behind by Roisin McGovern. But the hosts, still reeling from news breaking before the game that they will be without one of the stars of the season in Katie McCarn for the next six weeks, showed just why they a stellar seven-game unbeaten run in all competitions, that included booking their place in the All-Island Cup final at the end of the month. Following a good spell of pressure, the fearless home side got themselves in front in the 12th minute when Irish Under-19 star Aoibhe Brennan dug out a quality cross to the back post to Lovely who powered home a close-range header having sharply gotten in front of her marker. It was always going to be a tough challenge against the reigning champions, who would still have been riding high from their Champions League exploits, and the visitors showed their quality just after the half-hour mark, smashing the frame of the goal twice in quick succession. Firstly Shauna Brennan bombed forward from left back and whipped in another quality cross that was guided onto the crossbar by former Arizona Wildcats alumn Sarah Rice and seconds later star winger Madie Gibson cut in from the left, drifted across the box only to see her low strike smash off the foot of the post. Athlone are back on level terms 👊 Gibson's cross is finished off by Róisín Molloy! — LOI Women (@LoiWomen) August 9, 2025 But incredibly it was Bohs who doubled their lead, flying straight down the other end and having put together some neat build up play, it was McEvoy that was on hand to tap home a curled cross from Sarah McKevitt. The two-goal lead didn't last long though as the dynamic front three finally clicked for the illustrious visitors who deservedly halved the deficit before the break. Gibson first found Molloy free at the back post, forcing Bohs skipper Kelly into a Gordan Banks-esque save, and seconds later American winger teed up the clinical Brady who finished from close range. The goal came with a cost though as captain Izzy Groves was forced off with an innocuous looking injury just before the build up with Aoife O'Connor called up to replace her in the middle. The relentless pace continued into the second half as both sides refused to give an inch in a breathless encounter that began resembling something of a basketball game. Minutes after the restart, Bohs thought they had restored their two-goal lead when a lightning quick break ended with McKevitt being through on goal, latching on to Hannah Healy's through ball. Megan Plaschko raced off her line to smother the ball but the Bohs right winger poked the ball towards goal, and it was finished by McEvoy. Howevr, she had strayed offside. Knowing that every point is crucial in the title run-in, and with Shelbourne playing a day later at home to Waterford, The Town poured forward once again forcing an almighty goalmouth scramble that saw Alexis Strickland almost bundle home but the ball was cleared off the line by Lisa Murphy. Roared on by the boisterous and drum-bashing travelling support, Athlone continued to press but were constantly frustrated by the resolute Bohs' rear-guard who kept them at bay for large spells. Having put in a heroic effort to hold on to their lead, the tiring hosts were eventually undone with just six minutes of normal time remaining. Player of the match Gibson was direct again, running at right-back Power and standing up a deliciously inviting cross to the back post that was met flush by Molloy to make it 2-2. There was huge controversy in the 90th minute when Bohs substitute Hannah O'Brien sharply turned Natalie McNally and appeared to be bundled over only for referee Kate O'Brien pointing for a corner as both sides were forced to settle for a point. Bohemians: Rachael Kelly; Sarah Power, Roisin McGovern, Lisa Murphy, Katie Lovely (Michelle Muddiman, 73): Fiona Donnelly, Aoibhe Brennan; Sarah McKevitt (Hannah O'Brien, 60), Hannah Healy, Leiagh Glennon (Emma Gaughran, 60', Lillian Rusher, 81) ; Alannah McEvoy (Savannah Kane, 73').
