New Match of the Day hosts set out plans for new era after Gary Lineker exit
We're one third of the way into BBC Sport's Match of the Day panel before any of the new hosts mentions Gary Lineker. Even then it's only a brief nod.
Gabby Logan, Kelly Cates and Mark Chapman are sharing presenting duties this season after Lineker's much-publicised exit. And, speaking at the Beeb's start-of-season event in London, they're primed to look forward while not forgetting what has made the show great.
'It's a team effort,' Chapman says. 'All three of us have agreed it's not going to be about us - which might not be what the bosses want to hear.
'We've all worked in sport and it's about the pundits first and foremost, getting the best out of the pundits, and that's the most important thing for us. But this, for me, is a show that is thriving. It's a show that we hope to continue doing what's been done so far.'
All three hosts are coming at the project with different experiences, with Chapman a regular in the format after regularly hosting Match of the Day 2 in recent seasons (the Sunday show will drop the '2' this term, bringing it on level footing with the Saturday programme and midweek Champions League coverage). Cates' experience is more in the live football realm through her Sky Sports work, while Logan - who anchored The BBC's coverage of the Euro 2025 final as well as stepping in on MOTD in the past - is somewhere in the middle.
There's a sense that an ability to continue doing other work in sport was key for all three, ensuring none are known just for their work on the highlights show. And that breadth of experience - speaking to footballers in different contexts and speaking to athletes from other sports - will only strengthen the quality of their interactions with the rotating team of pundits on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday nights while allowing them to focus on bringing something unique to viewers.
'It's also about making sure we're talking about what people are interested in,' Cates says. 'And I think that's down to us to not get caught up in being too telly and not get caught up in being too driven by that, but actually to be listening to what fans are saying. It's never been easier to find out than it is now.'
All three of the new presenters have plenty of experience presenting high-profile sport, from live Premier League matches to the Olympic Games, but there's still something different about Match of the Day. "It's great fun, it's a great privilege, and you're working with great people and you want to be able to relax as the audience hopefully feels at home, so they can sit back and enjoy it," Logan says.
"So when that music plays there's always a frisson of excitement, a few little butterflies, and I think you need that for a performance. And that's hopefully going to result in some fantastic shows this season and people will enjoy them."
This might be why, even in a period where most of us will know the results long before 10.30 in the evening - and some of us will have already seen the goals - we will still tune in. As Logan herself puts it, the show provides a "full stop" on the day's action, and it's still where so many people will come for the final word.
The challenge now is ensuring they want to hear that word from a new team of presenters after the familiarity Lineker built up over a quarter of a century. Match of the Day returns this evening on this opening weekend of the Premier League season, with Chapman in the hotseat on Saturday and Logan on Sunday.
The BBC will have highlights available online earlier than ever before this season, with fans able to watch goals online before Match of the Day airs. And this allows whoever is in the chair on any given Saturday to remember what their focus needs to be.
'Since the match of the day started, it's been about the highlights, it's about seeing what's happened,' Cates acknowledges. "Really we're just there to help.'

Chelsea FC must build on Club World Cup glory to thrive in new Premier League campaign
Maresca is right to urge caution against talking as though the season is already going well. His team looked like Premier League title contenders until as late as December last season, and if he believes what he keeps saying — that Chelsea are a better team now than they were then — the proof will be in the pudding: in hitting the ground running and putting together a strong string of results.

Is Manchester United vs Arsenal on TV? Channel, kick-off time and how to watch Premier League fixture
Manchester United battle Arsenal in the big game of the opening weekend of the 2025/26 Premier League season. Title challengers Arsenal hope to finally get over the line under Mikel Arteta, with Viktor Gyokeres tipped to be the 'perfect match' after his £64m move from Sporting CP. While Ruben Amorim is in desperate need of results after a dismal debut campaign and an entirely new front three, in the shape of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, could accelerate the side's development. Martin Zubimendi adds class to the Gunners' midfield, too, with Noni Madueke offering another wide option to bring further depth. Here's everything you need to know about the big game at Old Trafford: When is Man United v Arsenal? Man United v Arsenal headlines the Sunday action in the Premier League on 17 August at Old Trafford, with kick-off set for 4:30pm BST. How can I watch it? Viewers in the United Kingdom can watch the match live on Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Main Event, coverage on both channels starts at 4pm BST, following Chelsea v Crystal Palace. A live stream will be available via NOW TV and Sky Go for subscribers as well. Benjamin Sesko will make his Premier League debut, with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha also likely to start in a new-look front three. It could push Bruno Fernandes into a deeper role. Joshua Zirkzee and Andre Onana should both shake off knocks to be available, though Noussair Mazraoui (hamstring) and Lisandro Martinez (knee) are both out. Viktor Gyokeres will lead the Gunners' line in his Premier League debut, though Kai Havertz has impressed in pre-season and provides another option for Mikel Arteta. Leandro Trossard should shake off a groin injury to be available, though Gabriel Jesus is a way off a return after a serious knee injury. Predicted line-ups Man United XI: Onana; Yoro, Maguire, Shaw; Dalot, Casemiro, Fernandes, Dorgu; Mbeumo, Cunha; Sesko Arsenal XI: Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Lewis-Skelly; Odegaard, Zubimendi, Rice; Saka, Gyokeres, Martinelli Odds Man United win 13/5 Draw 9/4 Arsenal win 2/1 The Independent vets betting sites for useability, security and responsible gambling tools. Man Utd vs Arsenal predictions as Gunners warned over dreadful Old Trafford record
Manchester United take on Arsenal on the opening weekend of the Premier League season on Sunday, and we asked out team how they see the game going Arsenal need this season to be their season, while Manchester United just need theirs to not be a mess. Both sides collide in the headline act on the opening weekend of the 2025-26 Premier League, with new signings on both sides desperate to impress. Ruben Amorim has remodelled the United attack by adding Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, while Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta hopes he's finally landed the No.9 the club have craved in the shape of Viktor Gyokeres. It may be just the first game of the season but there already feels like there is a lot on the line for both, so we asked our team how they see the game going. Alex Richards Mikel Arteta may have been wrong about Arsenal having more Premier League points than anyone else in the past three seasons, but one thing the Spaniard isn't mistaken about is that it's win or bust for the Gunners this season. The Spaniard has been backed to strengthen again in the summer and now has the No.9 he wants in Viktor Gyokeres. Where Arsenal are concerned, there is no more building. They simply have to win the title now. Of course, that doesn't mean they will. Liverpool and Manchester City, perhaps even Chelsea, will have a major say. But anything other than the trophy for Arteta isn't quite enough. Whether they live up to that pressure, we'll have to wait and see. United have made major changes over the summer. Those new signings will be looking to gel quickly for Ruben Amorim, himself under pressure to ensure that last season's 'free hit' doesn't extend into 2025-26. But on opening day, expect Arsenal to look to lay down a marker and do just that. I'd expect them to be too strong at Old Trafford and issue a statement of intent. Prediction: Man Utd 1 Arsenal 3 Mark Jones Arsenal have been dealt a tough start to the season, and as well as Old Trafford they'll also go to Anfield and St James' Park before September is out, while they'll host Manchester City as well For Mikel Arteta it could come to represent an uncomfortable flashback to last season, and the pressure really is on the Gunners to start well and look as though this year could finally be the year. There's pressure on Ruben Amorim as well of course, there always is when you manage Manchester United, but its isn't quite the same. United fans are desperate to see progress, and so they'll be cheering on anything and everything positive that they see on Sunday. The atmosphere will be quite intense. There have been some truly woeful United teams in recent years, but Arsenal have still only won twice at Old Trafford since 2006. They don't like going there, and this will be a difficult day for them. Prediction: Man Utd 1 Arsenal 1 Nathan Ridley Rarely do United start the Premier League season with a defeat and I don't think we'll see one today. Ruben Amorim's team have had an injection of attacking talent and they'll surely be more used to his system after a summer on the training ground. United's new front three of Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha - if they all start - will be difficult to handle for Arsenal, who won't have been able to study them as a trio. I of course have to balance that with the fact that the Gunners are the best team in the country when it comes to defending, so I can't seem them getting blown away. I'm going for a draw which will have the home side feeling optimistic for the season ahead and puts early pressure on Mikel Arteta. 1-1 with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Gabriel Martinelli. Prediction: Man Utd 1 Arsenal 1 Daniel Orme Let's not forget, Manchester United were truly awful last season. Arsenal were far from that. While they've not managed to get to where they want to be just yet, the Gunners simply know what they are doing under Mikel Arteta. And they've now got the missing link that they've been needing for some time: Viktor Gyokeres. It's really hard to envisage a situation where United manage to stop Arsenal from scoring given the amount of talent they have in their attack. And that will immediately put the hosts on the backfoot. Fans will point to United's outlay on their attack as reason for optimism - and that should certainly make them better this season. But it won't come right away, it might take time for all of their big name new signings to gel. That's something they can't afford if they're to get a result against the Gunners. So, it's tough to see past a relatively straight-forward Arsenal win at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. Prediction: Man Utd 0 Arsenal 2 Jenny Brown After the seemingly never-ending striker transfer sagas both Mikel Arteta and Ruben Amorim have got their men - actually they got each other's top targets. And if narrative has taught us anything it will be down to Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko to send the other club a message. Other tired cliches are available. Arsenal are currently the more cohesive unit, however Old Trafford has not been a happy hunting ground for the Gunners having won just two of their last 18 Premier League games there. Manchester United have added £200m worth of talent to their squad and have looked good throughout pre-season. But it may not be quite enough to take all three points. United and Arsenal have drawn each other in each of their last two meetings and I expect them to repeat that again. Prediction: Man Utd 2 Arsenal 2
