Axios27-01-2025

Award-winning Miami chef Michelle Bernstein is heading to Kendall next month.
Driving the news: Bernstein's restaurant La Cañita, which has a smaller space in Bayside Marketplace, is expanding to the Palms of Town & Country.
State of plate: The menu will feature Latin and Caribbean cuisine, like croquetas, empanadas, oxtail lasagna and locally caught snapper with ginger mojo de ajo.
The craft cocktail menu includes a classic Mojito made with four year Flor de Caña, the Presidente with housemade grenadine and the Brownie Old Fashioned, with Rye, Strega, brownie port and house bitters.
The vibe: An "island-kissed rum distillery" with an outdoor patio and live music.
What they're saying: La Cañita co-owner David Martinez, who has partnered with Bernstein on Miami staples like Cafe La Trova and Sweet Liberty, said the restaurant is a "labor of love."
"Our goal was always to give our guests an exciting, fun experience that was reasonably priced without compromising flavor, quality or ambiance."

Sara Krulwich/The New York Times Special Tony Awards are going to the musicians who make up the band of 'Buena Vista Social Club,' the hit Cuban musical based on the 1997 album, and to three people behind the stage illusions and effects in 'Stranger Things: The First Shadow,' a play based on the Netflix series. In addition, the actor and writer Harvey Fierstein received a lifetime achievement Tony. Over the course of his career, he has earned four Tony Awards. He took two home in 1983 for 'Torch Song Trilogy,' winning best play and best actor. He also won best book of a musical for 'La Cage aux Folles' in 1984 and best actor in a musical for 'Hairspray' in 2003. The musicians from the 'Buena Vista Social Club' being honored include Marco Paguia, the music director and conductor; David Oquendo, the associate music director and guitarist; Renesito Avich, who plays the Cuban tres; Gustavo Schartz, the bassist; Jesus Ricardo, the trumpeter; Eddie Venegas, the trombonist; Hery Paz on woodwinds; and Leonardo Reyna, a pianist; and Javier Diaz, Román Díaz and Mauricio Herrera on percussion. The musical was inspired by the influential 1997 album of the same title, which became a blockbuster and brought international recognition to the musicians. The ambitious scenery in 'Stranger Things: The First Shadow' included a 1,300 pound structure that had to move safely and quickly. Jamie Harrison, Chris Fisher, Gary Beestone and Edward Pierce will be honored for the show's illusions and technical effects. The play, set 24 years before the start of the Netflix series, follows the teenage life of the show's antagonist Henry Creel. In addition, the Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theater, given annually for work not eligible in the competitive categories, are going to these recipients: 'Great Performances,' the staple showcase for the performing arts on PBS for more than a half century. Michael P. Price, who at the time was the longest-serving executive director of any American theater when he retired from Goodspeed Musicals in 2014. In his 47 years at the helm of the theater, he produced more than 250 classic musicals and 100 new musicals. Along the way, he earned 13 Tony Awards. New 42, an entity created to revive 42nd Street and the surrounding theaters. The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, operating since 1965, which has one of the world's largest collections focused on the performing arts, with more than 8 million items. The Isabelle Stevenson Tony was given to Celia Keenan-Bolger for her advocacy work through the arts. This award is presented annually to an individual in the theater community who has volunteered time and effort to humanitarian, social service or charitable organizations. Billy Porter was last year's recipient. Show more

8 of the Best Latin-Themed Musicals Ever on Broadway: From ‘West Side Story' to ‘Buena Vista Social Club'

Two Latin-themed musicals have opened on Broadway within five weeks of each other, receiving some love from the Tonys this year: Buena Vista Social Club, which co-leads the list of nominees for the June 8 awards ceremony with 10 nods, and Real Women Have Curves: The Musical, which received two. More from Billboard Patti LuPone Apologizes for Her 'Demeaning and Disrespectful' Comments on Kecia Lewis and Audra McDonald Los Alegres del Barranco Cancel Show in Michoacán for 'Security Concerns' Grupo Firme Cancels U.S. Concert Due to Work Visas Being in 'Administrative Process' Buena Vista Social Club — which narrates the story of the Cuban artists who brought the acclaimed Grammy-winning album of 1997 to the world — competes in categories including best musical, best performance by an actress in a featured role (Natalie Venetia Belcon), best book (Marco Ramirez) and best direction (Saheem Ali). Furthermore, the musicians who make up the band in the show will be recognized with a special Tony Award. Real Women Have Curves: The Musical is nominated for best original score — by Latin music star Joy Huerta (half of the Mexican pop duo Jesse & Joy) and Benjamin Velez — and best performance by an actress in a featured role (Justina Machado). Based on the play by Josefina López and HBO's movie adaptation, it follows 18-year-old Ana García, a daughter of immigrant parents who struggles between her ambitions of going to college and the desires of her mother for her to get married, have children and oversee the small, rundown family-owned textile factory. And a third Latin-themed show is currently in the works: BASURA, with music and lyrics by no other than Cuban-American superstar Gloria Estefan and her daughter, songwriter Emily Estefan. Inspired by a true story, BASURA (Spanish for 'garbage') will narrate the journey of Paraguay's Recycled Orchestra, a group of young artists who turn scrap material into instruments and music into possibilities. But Broadway has had a long-standing history affair with Latin music and artists, with shows ranging from classics like West Side Story, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Evita and Man of La Mancha, to more recent productions like In the Heights and On Your Feet! — and legendary stars from Rita Moreno and Chita Rivera, to Lin-Manuel Miranda. There was also the short-lived The Capeman [1998] starring Rubén Blades, Marc Anthony and Ednita Nazario, a Paul Simon musical based on the life of convicted murderer Salvador Agrón which closed after only two months; and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown [2010], an adaptation of Pedro Almodóvar's iconic black comedy film, which received mostly negative reviews and lasted three months. Meanwhile, some non-Latin themed shows have featured Latin stars throughout the years, like Hamilton, starting with creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and including Anthony Ramos and Javier Muñoz; and Chicago, with Mexican actress Bianca Marroquín playing both Roxie and Velma intermittently since 2006, and star guests including Sofía Vergara, Jaime Camil and Sebastián Yatra.
