The Ohio State football program does something no other team in NCAA history has done
Not only did the Bucks become the first football program to appear 1,000 times, but there is quite a chasm between the Buckeyes and the next closest team, the Michigan Wolverines, who come in at 928 appearances all-time. That's 72 weeks' worth of Top-25 appearances that Ohio State has been ranked more than its arch rival.
Rounding out the top five were Oklahoma with 906 appearances, followed by Alabama and Notre Dame, tied with 891 apiece.
It's quite a feat and says a great deal about the tradition of excellence the Ohio State football program has created for nearly 100 years.
Next on the Buckeyes' radar? Become the second team in NCAA history to reach the 1,000 win plateau. The program currently sits at 978 wins, second only to Michigan, which has 1,012 wins. However, it should be noted, the Wolverines started playing football games a full 11 years before Ohio State. For now, at least, we'll bask in the glory of being the most frequent name mentioned in the AP Poll.

Including snubbing three worthy teams outside of the rankings. Even the term 'overrated' surfaces here. Texas won't earn the infamous 'O' word, though. The Longhorns lure back an abundance of talent. Plus feature Arch Manning in the most highly anticipated season ever for an incoming starting quarterback. Penn State sparked conversations by landing ahead of defending national champion Ohio State. But the Nittany Lions stockpiled on returning talent and massive college football transfer portal additions. Clemson earned an 'underrated' label by CBS Sports, landing at No. 4 ahead of Georgia. So who earns the overrated label? Each of these teams reside in the Southeastern Conference. Oklahoma Sooners land in Top 25 Yes there's renewed enthusiasm for the Sooners. Oklahoma is predicted to be better in 2025. But No. 18 is awfully high for a team that finished sub .500 last year. There's multiple other reasons why OU falls here. John Mateer is an intriguing quarterback addition. But he's facing a big jump to the SEC after playing in the two-team Pac-12 Conference in 2024. Incoming transfer Jadyn Ott must produce right out the gate too for one of the worst ground attacks in the conference. Mateer and Ott happen to play behind one of the nation's worst offensive lines last season. Head coach Brent Venables still must figure out his front five in the trenches. Oklahoma must beat Michigan early to ensure the AP did right by placing them inside the top 20. But No. 18 feels like a massive stretch. Ole Miss Rebels sneak into Top 25 Clearly last season's results persuaded Ole Miss's ranking. Or the fact Jaxson Dart came from here. Some fans will believe head coach Lane Kiffin persuaded the No. 21 ranking. Regardless, Ole Miss comes with a revamped roster ahead of the season. Including at Dart's old position behind center. It'll either be sophomore Austin Simmons or freshman A.J. Maddox locking down QB1 in Oxford. Meanwhile, the Rebels bring back a total of five returners from their 10-3 team. That's right — just five. There's even four brand new faces protecting the incoming QB. Fortunately Ole Miss gets five of its first six games at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. So perhaps the AP envisions a 6-0 start out the gate. But then comes back-to-back road trips against Georgia and the aforementioned Oklahoma. We'll likely find out more about this Rebels team even earlier, when Arkansas pulls into Oxford on Sept. 13. Tennessee Volunteers Who's the real starter at quarterback? Especially following the much discussed Nico Iamaleava drama out of Knoxville? Head coach Josh Heupel is yet to settle on former UCLA QB Joey Aguilar or four-star college football recruiting signing Jake Merklinger — who's still in play for QB1. The Volunteers have more than QB to figure out though. A new lead running back must emerge with Dylan Sampson in the league. Wide receiver is another thin area with Dont'e Thornton gone too. Tennessee could roll with as many as three freshmen — including prized 2025 four-star signings Travis Smith Jr. and Radarious Jackson. Heupel needs to rely on defense to maintain the 24th ranking or shoot higher. The Vols bring back seven starters there. But an untested RB and question marks at QB spell potential growing pains early. Even the season opener against a 10-3 Syracuse team from a year ago could knock Tennessee out the rankings right away. Two Ohio State players named to ESPN's 2025 preseason College Football All-American team
Like preseason polls, preseason All-America teams can be tricky. With input from pro scouts, college coaches and media colleagues, here's our 2025 team at ESPN. As we continue to march through fall camp and head towards the beginning of the college football season, we've seen plenty of Ohio State players receive preseason accolades and honors. The Buckeye program always has a few players mentioned among the best in the country because -- well -- it IS Ohio State after all. This week, two OSU players received another preseason honor when ESPN announced its preseason 2025 College Football All-American team. And while there are plenty of Ohio State players that could have been mentioned, and maybe just missed the cut, there are two that continue to appear on everyone's preseason list of best players as members of ESPN's first-team preseason All-American squad. On offense, wide receiver Jeremiah Smith was honored with ESPN gushing about the star wide receiver and perhaps the best player in all the game. "Smith returns as college football's premier player and the one who strikes the most fear into opposing defensive coordinators' hearts," wrote Chris Low. "The 6-3, 225-pound sophomore is a nightmarish matchup for defensive backs with his blend of size, strength and speed. He had 17 touchdown catches last year, including four in the Buckeyes' first two playoff games, and averaged 17.5 yards per catch." On the defensive side, you can once again guess which OSU player was recognized on the first team, none other than all-everything safety Caleb Downs. "Downs came into college football as one of the top prospects in the country, played that way as a freshman at Alabama and took yet another step this past season after transferring to Ohio State and helping lead the Buckeyes to the national championship," Low said. "The prototypical safety, Downs was third on Ohio State's team last season with 81 tackles, 7 ½ of them for loss, and had two interceptions." It should be noted that there was also one other Ohio State player who was mentioned on ESPN's second-team, and that was tight end Max Klare. He, too, is expected to do big things and build off of what he did at Purdue. In other words, there is still plenty of talent in the cupboard on the banks of the Olentangy. Oklahoma Sooners rank highly in Josh Pate's preseason JP Poll
The 2025 college football season kicks off with week zero just a week and a half away. Oklahoma won't play its first game of the season for another 18 days, but those two and a half weeks are going to fly by. We have the US LBM Coaches Poll and the AP Poll for the preseason, and there are mixed opinions on the Sooners heading into the season. Oklahoma was unranked in the US LBM Coaches Poll but was the highest ranking team among the others receiving votes category. In the AP Poll that was released on Monday, the Sooners came in at No. 18 in the nation. But there's one poll, from a prominent college football analyst, that is even higher on the Sooners than the Associated Press. Josh Pate, of the Josh Pate College Football Show, released his preseason JP Poll, which is a power rating that compares how teams might fare if they were to face off on a neutral field. He's been high on Oklahoma all offseason, in large part due to the additions the Sooners made on the offensive side of the ball, bringing in offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and quarterback John Mateer. So where do the Sooners rank in the preseason JP Poll? Let's take a look. 20. SMU Mustangs SMU and quarterback Kevin Jennings took the ACC by storm in 2024 but lost to the deeper and more experienced Clemson team in the ACC title game before getting blown out by Penn State on the road in Happy Valley in the College Football Playoff. Jennings is back, and if he can shake off what happened to end the season, he'll be must-see television again. 19. Kansas State Wildcats Avery Johnson is back at the helm for the Kansas State Wildcats, who open the season vs. Iowa State in Ireland. Chris Klieman is a good coach, but the Wildcats haven't been able to win the biggest games consistently to win a conference title. Is this the year they finally break through? 18. Tennessee Volunteers Josh Heupel has recruited well but they lost a lot of significant pieces from their playoff run a year ago led by running back Dylan Sampson and defensive end James Pierce. 17. South Carolina Gamecocks Pate might be underrating the Gamecocks a little bit but South Carolina did lose a lot from a really good defense. LaNorris Sellers was really good in his first year at the helm for the Gamecocks but how will he respond if he's having to carry the load? 16. Michigan Wolverines The Michigan defense will be good. The offensive line usually is too. What will the passing game look like? That's a lot of what held the Wolverines back last year. If they've improved, Michigan could be back in the Big Ten title hunt. 15. USC Trojans For USC, it all comes down to how they hold up in the trenches. We know Lincoln Riley can scheme explosive plays but if those plays don't get time to develop, it's going to be tough sledding for the Trojans. 14. Ole Miss Rebels Ole Miss had one of the best rosters in the nation last year and fell short of a College Football Playoff berth due to a loss to Kentucky. They lost a lot of talent and experience from last year's squad led by quarterback Jaxson Dart and wide receiver Tre Harris. Austin Simmons has a chance to be really good, but how quickly will he settle in as the starting quarterback? 13. Texas A&M Aggies Texas A&M will have a good defense. The offensive line and running game will be really good. If Marcel Reed has improved as a passer, the Aggies will be a problem in the SEC and on the national scene. 12. LSU Tigers Most places consider the LSU Tigers a top 10 team in 2025. But questions around an offensive line that lost both tackles and a defense that hasn't held up their end of the bargain have some skeptical about LSU's title chances this season. 11. Miami Hurrianes Miami underachieved relative to expectations in 2024 with Cam Ward at quarterback. It could be argued they downgraded when Ward went No. 1 in the 2025 NFL draft and they brought in former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck to replace him. 10. Oklahoma Sooners Josh Pate has been bullish on the Oklahoma Sooners, mentioning they're a top 10 team regardless of their schedule. But there are only two teams on the schedule ahead of the Sooners in the JP Poll: Texas and Alabama. It could be a big year for the Sooners. 9. Florida Gators Like Oklahoma, many point to the schedule the Florida Gators face in 2025. But this is a talented team. If D.J. Lagway can overcome the nagging injuries that have plagued him this offseason, the Gators will be a fun team to watch. 8. Clemson Tigers Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik is one of the frontrunners for the Heisman Trophy this year after a big 2024 season. Clemson is hoping for significant improvement from the defense. If they get that the Tigers are a legit contender this season. 7. Oregon Ducks Dan Lanning has recruited well for Oregon and they've done a good job in the transfer portal. But like so many teams in 2025, how will they fare with a first-year starter at quarterback? 6. Notre Dame Fighting Irish The Notre Dame Fighting Irish came up short in the national championship game with Riley Leonard at quarterback but are still trying to figure out who will be replacing him. 5. Alabama Crimson Tide Kalen DeBoer officially named Ty Simpson as the Crimson Tide's starting quarterback. With Ryan Williams to throw to, Simpson will have a shot to make his first season as a starter a memorable one. 4. Penn State Nittany Lions Penn State is the only team in the top seven of the JP Poll that is returning their starting quarterback from 2024. The problem is head coach James Franklin and quarterback Drew Allar haven't found a way to come through in big games. They're a talented bunch and added defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. Can they get over the hump? 3. Georgia Bulldogs The model of consistency, Kirby Smart, is widely considered the best coach in college football. Also entering 2025 with a new starting quarterback. Smart played up Georgia's youth entering the season, but don't be fooled, they'll be a contender in the SEC. 2. Ohio State Buckeyes The defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes will have a new starting quarterback as well, but Ryan Day has never hurt for talent in Columbus. QB Julian Sayin will have an elite group of receivers to throw to. The bigger question is if the Buckeyes will suffer a drop off with the departure of defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. 1. Texas Longhorns Texas may end up with one of the best defenses in college football in 2025 and that may be enough for the Longhorns to be a title contender given everything they've turned over on the offensive side of the ball. They have a talented receiver corps and Arch Manning has big upside. If the offensive line is ready to step into the lofty shoes vacated by last year's experienced group, Texas could finish the season like they started, the No. 1 team in the nation.
