All-Star pitcher Alex Wood retires after 12 MLB seasons and World Series title
Wood began his post on Instagram by saying he had 'immense gratitude' following a career in which the 34-year-old was an All-Star selection in 2017 and reached the postseason seven times.
'I never could've imagined it would turn out this way,' Wood wrote.
'Baseball was my first love. Outside of God and my family, nothing else has shaped me the way this game has,' he added. 'Even writing this, I can't help but smile thinking about how much I still love the game after all this time.'
Wood's retirement comes after he went 1-3 with a 5.26 ERA in nine starts for the Oakland Athletics last season. Overall, the 6-foot-4 pitcher from Charlotte, North Carolina, went 77-68 with a 3.78 ERA over 278 games split between five teams, including two stints with the Dodgers.
He played collegiately at Georgia, was selected in the second round of the 2012 draft by the Braves and made his major league debut with Atlanta a year later. Wood's best season came in 2017 when he went 16-3 with a 2.72 ERA in 27 games for the Dodgers.

After spending 2019 in Cincinnati, he returned to Los Angeles and pitched four scoreless innings during the Dodgers' six-game World Series win over Tampa Bay. He also spent three seasons with the San Francisco Giants.
'Playing for five iconic franchises and becoming part of those communities is something my family and I will always cherish,' Wood wrote.
He then closed his message by writing: 'Cheers to what's next. See you at the park! Love, Woody.'

White Sox reinstate infielder Miguel Vargas from the 10-day injured list
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox reinstated infielder Miguel Vargas from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday. The White Sox also brought up right-hander Yoendrys Gómez from Triple-A Charlotte. Right-hander Elvis Peguero was sent down, and outfielder Corey Julks was designated for assignment. Vargas and Gómez were in the starting lineup for the team's game against Detroit. Vargas was at first base, batting sixth. The 25-year-old Vargas had been sidelined by a left oblique strain. Vargas, who was acquired from the Dodgers as part of a three-team trade in July 2024, hit .229 with 13 homers and 44 RBIs in 106 games before the injury. Gómez, 25, went 4-3 with a 2.12 ERA in 14 games with Charlotte, including 11 starts. He was claimed off waivers from the Dodgers on May 10. Gómez is making his first start in his 19th major league appearance. He has pitched for the Yankees, Dodgers and White Sox this year, going 1-1 with a 6.62 ERA in 12 games. Astros All-Star closer Josh Hader placed on 15-day disabled list with shoulder strain
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros All-Star closer Josh Hader was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained left shoulder. The move, retroactive to Monday, comes after the left-hander reported shoulder discomfort before Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox. 'It's (a) punch in the gut,' manager Joe Espada said. 'But … he's seeing doctors right now. We're getting more tests done and hopefully this is not going to be a long-term thing.' Espada added that they don't yet know the severity of the injury and should know more after additional testing. Espada said he would not name a closer to fill in while Hader is out, but would use his relievers based on matchups. 'I feel good about all those guys,' Espada said. Hader, who is in his second season in Houston, is 6-2 with a 2.05 ERA and is tied for third in the majors with 28 saves in 48 appearances this season. To take his spot on the roster, the AL West-leading Astros reinstated right-hander Shawn Dubin from the 15-day injured list. They also designated right-hander Hector Neris for assignment and recalled left-hander Colton Gordon from Triple-A Sugar Land. Angels aim to continue recent mastery of Dodgers

The Angels took a 4-0 lead in the six-game series with a 7-4 victory on Monday night. Shortstop Zach Neto reached base five times, going 3-for-3 with two solo home runs, three runs and two walks, while starter Jose Soriano allowed just two singles over six shutout innings. It was the fifth straight victory over the defending World Series champions going back to last season for the Angels. The loss dropped the Dodgers to just 12-19 since July 4, and their lead in the National League West fell to one game over the red-hot San Diego Padres, winners of 12 of their past 15. The bitter NL West rivals play six times over a 10-game span beginning with a three-game series at Dodger Stadium on Friday night. That makes the final two games of the Freeway Series even more important for the Dodgers. 'It was a bad loss,' said third baseman Max Muncy, who hit a three-run homer on Monday. 'It really was a bad loss for us. There's not any way of really getting around that.' The loss came on the heels of a frustrating 5-4 home defeat to Toronto on Sunday afternoon, a game that saw the Dodgers lose despite finishing with 10 hits and 13 walks. However, Los Angeles was just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 16 men on base. 'It's not going well for us right now,' Muncy said. 'We've got to find a way to snap out of it. No one is going to feel sorry for us. It's on us to find our way out of it.' Muncy was asked if he was doing any scoreboard watching with the Padres in hot pursuit. 'We need to focus on ourselves. We can't worry about what anyone else is going,' he said. 'We've got to snap out of what is going on.' Emmet Sheehan (3-2, 3.00 ERA) will make his first career start against the Angels on Tuesday and will be opposed by fellow right-hander Victor Mederos (0-0, 4.50), who will be making his first career appearance versus the Dodgers. Mederos is 7-5 with a 3.39 ERA in 16 starts at Triple-A Salt Lake. He is subbing for left-hander Tyler Anderson, who is dealing with back stiffness and has made a franchise-record 19 consecutive starts without a win.
