Mohali rehab centre packed, admn scouts for new facility
Mohali: With the district's sole government de-addiction centre in Sector 66 filled to capacity, Mohali administration has started searching for an additional facility to house drug addicts being brought in as part of the ongoing anti-drug drive in the state. Officials from the district administration recently inspected the civil hospital in Phase 6, where a ward on the fourth floor is being considered for conversion into a temporary de-addiction centre. Authorities said that if implemented, the ward would require heavy security arrangements — similar to a jail — to prevent inmates from escaping. The demand for additional accommodation grew over the past week after the 100-bed de-addiction centre in Sector 66 reported that it could no longer take in more patients. Earlier this year, its capacity was increased from 70 to 100 beds as part of the state government's intensified "War against drugs" campaign. Under this drive, police are arresting drug smugglers and detaining drug users, who are sent to de-addiction centres for treatment instead of prison.
