arur: A 49-year-old man from Coimbatore, wanted in connection with a money laundering case in Odisha, was arrested by a team of CBI officials from Bhubaneswar in Karur on Sunday.
The accused, G Sivakumar, a native of Peelamedu in Coimbatore, had been absconding since 2017 after cheating many people across the country through a fraudulent financial scheme. Sources said he was part of a six-member group that operated a bogus financial institution out of Bengaluru since 2016, promising to double investors' money through online advertisements. The firm collected crores of rupees from unsuspecting investors, including victims from Odisha.
When neither interest nor refunds were paid, defrauded investors filed a complaint in Odisha's Ganjam and Gajapati, following which the case was transferred to CBI.
While five of the accused were arrested earlier, Sivakumar had remained elusive. Acting on a tip, a five-member CBI team traced him to a relative's house in Ganapathipalayam near Thanthonimalai in Karur. With the permission of the Karur district superintendent of police Josh Thangiah, the team arrested Sivakumar on Sunday.
He was initially held at Thanthonimalai police station and later taken to Karur govt medical college hospital for medical examination. Sivakumar was then transported to Bhubaneswar for further investigation.

Graft in Chander Kunj Army Towers construction: Plea in HC seeks CBI probe

Kochi: An appeal has been filed before high court seeking a CBI investigation into the alleged corruption behind the dilapidated condition of Towers B and C of the Chander Kunj Army Towers at Silver Sand Island, Vyttila. A bench of Justices A Muhamed Mustaque and Harisankar V Menon admitted the appeal filed by Ciby George, an occupant of the residential towers, and issued notices to the central govt, National Disaster Management Authority, Central Bureau of Investigation and other respondents, including the Army Welfare Housing Organisation (AWHO). The court adjourned the matter for Aug 25. Earlier, on Feb 3, a single bench had directed the demolition and reconstruction of the towers after finding them unsafe. The district collector has since formulated a time-bound plan for each phase of the demolition and reconstruction process, with completion targeted for Oct 2029. Meanwhile, George approached HC seeking a CBI probe into the alleged corruption behind the structural damage, invoking Sections 60, 71, and 72 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005. However, the single bench declined the request, observing that it was not a fit case for exercising discretionary jurisdiction to direct the CBI to register an FIR. Following this, George filed the present appeal seeking a direction to the CBI to register an FIR and to initiate and complete the investigation within a stipulated timeframe — ideally before the demolition contract is awarded. Plea in HC alleges scam in buying 144 SUVs for Punjab's highway patrol

Chandigarh: A public interest litigation (PIL) filed in the Punjab and Haryana high court has alleged large-scale financial irregularities in the purchase of 144 Toyota Hilux vehicles by the Punjab govt in Dec 2023 for its 'Sadak Surakhya Force'. The case was listed for hearing on Thursday, but it did not come up for hearing. It is now expected to be heard on Friday. The petitioner, Ludhiana resident Satnam Singh Dhawan, compared the price at which these vehicles were purchased by the state govt from the manufacturer directly with the price at which such vehicles were available in the market with the dealers during Dec 2023. The petitioner claimed that he found the price at which the state of Punjab purchased these vehicles directly from the manufacturer cost the exchequer an amount to the tune of Rs 10.7 lakh for every such vehicle. He claimed that in other words, for purchasing 144 vehicles, the state paid a minimum of Rs 15.44 crore extra, even if the bulk discount was not available. "Although the financial loss to the state must be, if investigated, much more, in case the bulk discount on the purchase of such a huge quantity of vehicles directly from the manufacturer is available. Thus, it is clear that the middlemen/concerned officer who are party to the purchase of the aforesaid Toyota Hilux vehicles have embezzled a part of the funds meant for purchasing the 144 vehicles," the petition mentioned. The petitioner also claimed to have submitted representations to the director, CBI, seeking investigation but he had not received any response.
