Treatment for lifestyle diseases soon in PHCs across Karnataka
BENGALURU: With the cases of lifestyle diseases increasing, the health department is planning to offer healthcare to such patients at its Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the state at an affordable cost. The number of people with diabetes, back pain, early age arthritis, pulmonary diseases, asthma and other lifestyle diseases, also called as non-communicable diseases, is increasing. The Gruha Arogya programme initiated by the state government also revealed that people from all age groups suffer from such diseases.
Along with basic medical facilities, tests and treatments for lifestyle diseases will be given, Harsh Gupta, principal secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, said.
'PHCs will also be equipped with medical equipment to test people with lifestyle diseases. Like in private health centres, patients' health cards will also be maintained at PHCs, which can be referred anywhere in the state. We are planning to offer dental care in PHCs,' said a government doctor.
A senior health official said many people do not visit government hospitals because they lack facilities. Efforts are not being made to improve them. 'Now, most people, including students, suffer from blood pressure and diabetes. They can have health cards from PHCs free of cost. There are many MBBS graduates and young doctors seeking jobs. We will appoint them in PHCs on a contract basis,' the official added.
He said PHCs are being linked with government hospitals for referring cancer patients for immediate treatment, just like private clinics partnering with hospitals providing specialised healthcare. Gupta admitted to the staff shortage in government hospitals and PHCs. He said 30% of posts are vacant in critical care sections (around 40,000). They faced a shortage of 9,000 nurses, auxiliary nurses, midwives and technicians.

Karnataka hikes salaries of NHM doctors, specialists, nurses
BENGALURU: To boost healthcare services and retain talent under the National Health Mission (NHM), the state government on Thursday revised the salaries of MBBS doctors, senior specialists and nursing officers working in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCUs) and Intensive Care Units (ICUs) across the state. MBBS medical officers working in various NHM programmes at the state and district levels will now receive a consolidated monthly salary of Rs 75,000 and senior medical officers Rs 86,858 – Rs 80,000. Major clinical specialists including OBG, Paediatrics, Anaesthesia, General Medicine, Orthopaedics, Surgeons and Ophthalmologists will draw Rs 1.4 lakh per month, revised from the earlier Rs 1.1–1.3 lakh range. For these posts, experienced candidates will be eligible for an additional 25 per cent increment per annum. The pay cap is fixed at Rs 1.75 lakh and is only applicable to retirees. The same rules must be readapted for new and serving staff. Their experience will be given priority during recruitment. Similarly, nursing officers working in SNCU or ICUs, with computer skills and a minimum of 5 years of experience will now earn Rs 22,000 per month, up from the earlier Rs 14,186–Rs 18,141 range.

19 Covid patients hospitalised: CM Rekha Gupta
New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday revealed that 19 Covid-19 patients were currently hospitalised in the national capital but emphasised that there was no cause for worry. 'Nineteen patients are admitted to hospitals, and the remaining are receiving treatment at their homes. But COVID-19 has not reached the point where people need to worry. The government is ready for every situation,' Gupta said, as quoted by PTI. She added that the government was on alert and hospitals were ready. The CM also pointed out that people needed to remain cautious. Last week, the Delhi government issued an advisory to hospitals, asking them to ensure availability of beds, medicines and oxygen. Delhi had 104 active COVID-19 cases till Monday, according to official data. Health officials told PTI that 24 patients had recovered in the past week. Meanwhile, Mumbai has been recording an average of 11 new Covid-19 cases daily, according to an HT report. On May 28, Mumbai logged 36 new cases marking a surge in the number of infections.

‘LNJP becomes first Delhi government hospital with medical genetics department'
NEW DELHI: LNJP Hospital has become the first Delhi government hospital to establish a medical genetics department, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Thursday as she inaugurated the facility. Besides the genetics ward, Gupta also inaugurated a Lactation Management Unit and Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing (NAT) lab at the state-run hospital. Gupta said the government is consistently working to enhance Delhi's healthcare system. 'Our goal is to ensure accessible, high-quality, and timely medical services for every citizen -- regardless of age, background, or region. A healthy Delhi is the foundation of a developed Delhi. With this vision, three highly advanced health services have been launched, setting a new milestone in the city's medical infrastructure,' she said. Gupta said it is the first Delhi government hospital to establish a medical genetics department. It is the fourth such department among NMC-recognised colleges across India and the second to be linked with a Centre of Excellence for Rare Genetic Disorders, she added.
