Stalin orders Madurai zonal chiefs to quit amid property tax scam
M K Stalin
ordered all five zonal chairpersons of the Madurai corporation to resign from their posts. The move followed the recent expulsion of the mayor's husband from the party and came amid the recent property tax scam.
The zonal chairpersons are Vasuki Sasikumar (Madurai East), Saravana Bhuvaneshwari (Madurai North), Pandi Selvi (Madurai Central), Mugesh Sharma (Madurai South), and V Suvitha (Madurai West).
Highly placed sources from DMK said the directive was issued during Stalin's ongoing 'Udanpirappe Vaa' one-on-one outreach with party functionaries, where he warned that positions would be withdrawn wherever necessary, without leniency.
The discontent simmered for months, especially after a controversial corporation council meeting in May. The council meeting, which coincided with a consultative meeting chaired by commercial taxes minister P Moorthy, ahead of DMK's general council meeting, was held without quorum. Of the 100 councillors, only 25 were present initially. With the support of AIADMK councillors, quorum was managed, and resolutions were passed — an unusual move that triggered concerns within DMK ranks.
In the lead-up to the party's general council meeting in Madurai on May 29, the party suspended mayor Indrani Ponvasanth's husband, Vasanth. A directive from DMK general secretary Durai Murugan cited that Vasanth acted against party interests. Sources said he insisted on conducting the corporation meeting despite internal opposition, creating a rift in the local leadership.
Adding to the controversy, a property tax scam rocked the city corporation.
A 10-month probe by the central crime branch of Madurai city police uncovered large-scale irregularities in the property tax assessment process by changing the data in the Urban Tree Information System (UTIS). At least five temporary revenue staff were arrested for allegedly reducing property tax for more than 150 buildings, causing financial loss to the Madurai corporation.
Official sources confirmed that the role of zonal chairpersons was also under scrutiny.
Intelligence reports sent to the DMK leadership reportedly allege that several zone heads may have colluded with local bill collectors in the scam.
According to party sources, minister of municipal administration K N Nehru, commercial taxes minister P Moorthy, and IT minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan met all the zonal chairpersons recently and held discussions in Madurai on Monday.
"We met the mayor and the chairpersons to review and speed up civic works ahead of the elections, not for any internal party matter.
The party high command will make decisions regarding resignations, Nehru informed TOI. However, a highly placed party source, on condition of anonymity, said that the party leadership is also unhappy with the functioning of the mayor, and she may not continue in the post for long.
When contacted, Vasuki Sasikumar said she had not received any official intimation about her resignation. "If I receive a directive, I will respond accordingly," she told TOI.
However, DMK sources said all five zonal chairpersons have to resign, and communication in this regard might not have reached them. The other four zonal chairpersons were unavailable for comment.

Stalin tells DMK dist secys to form BLCs
Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin on Wednesday urged DMK district secretaries to form booth-level committees (BLCs) to ensure that there are no largescale deletions of voters similar to Bihar . "We have seen the atrocities that unfolded in the guise of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voters list in Bihar. Our booth level committees should be strengthened. So expedite the constitution of BLCs," Stalin said at a district secretaries meeting. He said he would personally monitor the process of setting up of BLCs and appointment of booth committee members. He said for every 100 voters, one BLC member should be appointed. A resolution condemning the SIR exercise of the Election Commission in Bihar was also passed at the meeting. The resolution demanded free and fair elections. Saved 252 People: DMK Leader Appears To Defend Kidney Transplant Racket
Chennai: A controversial video has emerged of DMK MLA P Kathiravan, whose family-run hospital recently lost its kidney transplant licence over an alleged illegal organ trade racket. In the video, which NDTV could not independently verify, the legislator purportedly presents himself as a life-saver rather than a wrongdoer. "I've saved the lives of 252 people. None talks about this," Mr Kathiravan is heard saying while addressing people at his constituency. Detailing the procedures, he claims that each kidney transplant involved four specialist doctors - three surgeons, one urologist and an anaesthetist - along with 15 to 20 supporting staff, and that three separate permissions were required before surgery. "We charge Rs 10 to Rs 12 lakh per surgery. After paying for medicines and doctors, I get only Rs 2-3 lakh. Total surgeries done - 252. This is not worth a rupee. Since we have a medical college, we do this only as a service. There are a thousand ways to earn. Why kidney? How many can we take away?" he apparently says in the clip. Mr Kathiravan even refered to his father's luxury car. "My father's Rolls Royce is worth Rs 14.5 crore. I would have to take away all the kidneys here to buy that," he said, insisting that the hospital is now run by his daughter and son-in-law. Modus Operandi Earlier this month, the Tamil Nadu government suspended the kidney transplant licences of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College Hospital in Perambalur - run by Kathiravan's family - and Cethar Hospitals in Trichy. A state health department probe found that the "family donor" provision under the Transplantation of Human Organs Act was allegedly misused, with poor weavers from Namakkal district being lured by brokers with large sums of money to sell their kidneys. These donors would then pose as relatives of recipients to pass legal scrutiny. One such alleged middleman, identified as Anandan, remains on the run, no arrest has been made yet. "Boasting Without Shame" Says BJP Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai slammed the MLA's comments, accusing him of "boasting without shame" and "admitting to a business worth crores". "Kathiravan says he made ₹2 to ₹3 lakh per surgery, which amounts to at least ₹7.5 crore from this trade. He even compares kidney profits to his father's ₹14.5 crore Rolls Royce. This isn't a joke - poor weavers were exploited, and the DMK government has taken no serious action. The middleman is still at large," Annamalai said. The video has come as an embarassment to the ruling DMK and the party has so far refrained from commenting on the controversy. Kathiravan was not reachable for a response.

PhD scholar refuses to receive cert from guv at convocation
Tirunelveli: A woman PhD scholar of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU) caused a stir at its 32nd convocation in Tirunelveli on Wednesday when she refused to receive her doctorate from governor R N Ravi saying he is 'someone who is against the welfare of Tamil Nadu'. The scholar, Jean Joseph, wife of a DMK functionary in Nagercoil, completed her research in microfinance. At the convocation, graduating students came to the stage with their certificates and posed with the governor. However, Jean Joseph purposefully walked past Ravi with her certificate and posed with vice-chancellor N Chandrasekar for a photograph before exiting the stage. "I did this only as a way to register my protest against the governor, who has not contributed anything to the development of the state and has shown he is against the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, BJP leader K Annamalai, in a social media post, condemned the act and accused the DMK of creating 'unnecessary and useless drama' using an educational institution for scoring political points. A total of 37,376 students were conferred degrees in bachelor's, master's, MPhil, and PhD programmes at the convocation. As many as 759 candidates received their degrees in person while 650 were awarded PhD degrees. In all, 109 medallists were recognised for their outstanding achievements.
