How a WhatsApp message collapsed Barcelona's move for Nico Williams

Yahoo19-07-2025
A fresh insight into some of the details of Barcelona's failed move for Athletic Club star Nico Williams this summer has this weekend been forthcoming online.
This comes amid confirmation that the entire operation ultimately fell apart owing to a single message sent via WhatsApp.
The name of wide-man Nico of course dominated the headlines in Catalunya's capital once more earlier this summer.
As much came after widespread confirmation was forthcoming that Barcelona had reactivated their efforts to bring the 22-year-old in from Athletic.
The saga was kicked back into gear by Nico's agent, Felix Tainta, who made direct contact with Deco and co. to inform Barca of his client's eagerness to finally seal his long-awaited Camp Nou switch.
As revealed on Saturday, however, it was also developments surrounding Tainta which later resulted in the transfer's collapse.
As per a report from , amid growing frustrations with Nico's representative, a member of the Blaugrana's board made direct contact with the attacker's family.
This came to urge Nico to seek out a new agent to close the operation.
And as much, it is understood, marked 'the beginning of the end':
'The Whatsapp message ended up being the beginning of the end. The feeling of the communication was as follows: Leave Tainta and have Jorge Mendes or Pini Zahavi represent you. The suggestion obviously reached the whole family. And the outrage was tremendous.'
Owing to their close, long-term bond with Tainta, the Williams family therefore made the call to completely pull the plug on the move, deeply offended by Barcelona's actions.

Sunderland confirm loan signing of Chelsea youngster

Sunderland have confirmed the loan signing of Chelsea forward Marc Guiu. The teenager signed for the London club from Barcelona last summer, but made just six appearances across all competitions last term, most of which came in the Uefa Europa Conference League. There had been interest in Guiu from clubs earlier in the summer, but Chelsea were seeking a loan exit for the 19-year-old as opposed to a permanent move away. Guiu becomes Sunderland's ninth signing of the summer window as they prepare for a return to the Premier League next season. So far, they have made a handful of high-profile additions, including former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen. Guiu's move is a straight season-long loan with no buy option included, but he is expected to become an integral figure in the Black Cats' forward line as they aim to avoid the drop. 📸 Ed Sykes - 2024 Getty Images

German club pull out of transfer of Israel international over Gaza social media posts

Fortuna Dusseldorf have pulled out of a deal to sign Shon Weissman due to the player's social media comments on the Israel-Gaza war, which the club say are 'not compatible' with their values. The 2. Bundesliga club had agreed a deal to sign the Israel international forward from Spanish club Granada, but did not proceed with the move after social media posts from Weissman resurfaced. The 29-year-old had already travelled to Dusseldorf and underwent medical tests ahead of completing his move. However, on Tuesday, Dusseldorf posted on their social media: 'We looked into Shon Weissman intensively, but ultimately decided not to sign him.' INFO-TWEET ℹ️ Wir haben uns intensiv mit Shon Weissman beschäftigt, uns aber final entschieden, von einer Verpflichtung abzusehen.#f95 | 🔴⚪ — Fortuna Düsseldorf (@f95) August 5, 2025 Weissman, who has scored six goals in 39 appearances for Israel, had made several social media posts after the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel, which was followed by the subsequent military response by Israel. The player sent one social media reply suggesting there should be violent retaliations for the October 7 attacks, and liked or shared other social media posts calling for violence against the population of Gaza. Advertisement 'We did not sign Shon because the comments he made online are not compatible with Fortuna's values,' a Fortuna spokesperson told The Athletic. 'Fortuna is committed to fighting violence and hatred. So the detailed findings have led us to decide now not to sign the player. We wish Shon all the best for the future.' A spokesperson for Weismann said he 'regrets the previous interactions on social media' and claimed 'his emotions were high in the immediate aftermath' of the October 7 attacks. Fortuna's position is that the decision is unrelated to nationality or religion, and relates to their stance as an open club which actively opposes racism, exclusion, and hatred. Israel declared war on Hamas after the group's October 7 attack in 2023, which killed about 1,195 people and saw around 250 taken hostage, according to Israeli officials via the New York Times. More than 60,000 people in Gaza have been killed, according to Gaza health officials via the NYT, since October 2023. UNICEF said in June that 50,000 children had been killed or injured in Gaza since the war began. Additional reporting by Sebastian Stafford-Bloor. (Juan Manuel) Spot the pattern. Real Madrid Are Eyeing A Move To Land This Liverpool Defender Next Summer: Good Choice For Alonso?

In a recent report, Fichajes mentioned that Real Madrid are eyeing a move to land Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate next summer. It has been stated that Los Blancos are eager to strengthen their defence by recruiting the France international at the end of next season. Konate's Decent Run Of Form In English Football Konate enjoyed a solid campaign at the Merseyside club recently as he put in a series of impressive performances at the heart of Arne Slot's backline. The French defensive ace made 42 appearances for Liverpool last season, scoring two goals and earning two assists on all fronts. The 26-year-old was a rock at the back after he made 40 tackles, 29 blocks and 17 interceptions in the Premier League. He was even tidy when distributing possession from inside his half after completing 90.2% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via His current contract at Anfield will run out at the end of next season, which could open the door for Los Blancos to sign him on a free transfer in 2026. (Photo by) Is Konate A Good Choice For Real Madrid Boss Xabi Alonso? Konate loves a tackle and can read the danger well to earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and can use his strong 1.94m frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. The France international has been a consistent performer for Liverpool over the past few years. Thus, it is only logical for Los Blancos to try and lure him to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on a free transfer next summer. At 26, Konate has his peak years ahead of him, which makes him a great choice for Real Madrid to consider next summer. The Liverpool star would no doubt enhance the quality of Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso's defence. He has what it takes to nail down a regular first-team spot at the Madrid club. The French talent could even help the Madrid outfit compete for a lot of major trophies in the future. Furthermore, he would be available as a free agent, which makes him an affordable option for Los Blancos to pull off in 2026.
