Mike Brown embracing lofty expectations in first comments as Knicks coach

New York Post08-07-2025
The Knicks are in win-now mode with a new head coach. And Mike Brown is ready for the pressure that comes along with it.
'Nobody has any bigger expectations, first of all, than I do,' Brown said Tuesday during his introductory press conference at the team's practice facility in Tarrytown. 'My expectations are high. This is the Knicks. I talked about Madison Square Garden being iconic. I love and embrace the expectations that come along with it. So, I'm looking forward to it.'
Brown is looking beyond just ending the Knicks' 52-year championship drought, however.
'Our goal, starting with Mr. [James] Dolan to Leon [Rose] to the players, all the way down to the fans, is to build a sustainable, winning culture that produces championships. That's why I'm here,' said Brown, who's won four NBA titles as an assistant coach.
The Knicks agreed to hire Brown last week after firing Tom Thibodeau in the days following the team's elimination by the Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals, their first appearance in the conference finals in 25 years.

Brown, Taylor Jenkins, Micah Nori, James Borrego and Dawn Staley all spoke to the Knicks about their head coaching job after the team was denied permission to speak with the Mavericks' Jason Kidd, Rockets' Ime Udoka, Timberwolves' Chris Finch, Bulls' Billy Donovan and Hawks' Quin Snyder.
Brown, 55, was most recently the head coach of the Kings, with whom he earned Coach of the Year honors in his first season two years ago.
Sacramento fired him 31 games into the 2024-25 season when they were 13-18.
He first became a head coach in 2005 with the LeBron James-led Cavaliers and reached the NBA Finals in 2007.

Luka Doncic: 'Just visually, I would say my whole body looks better'

Nothing motivates the greats quite like the quest to prove someone wrong. When the Dallas Mavericks shocked the NBA by trading Luka Doncic to the Lakers, it was followed up by spin out of Dallas about GM Nico Harrison and the franchise's concerns about Doncic's lack of commitment to conditioning, taking care of his body and defense. This summer, we have seen "skinny" Luka on social media as he works out to get in shape. Doncic spoke about that with Men's Health Magazine. " Just visually, I would say my whole body looks better... "Every summer I try my best to work on different things. Obviously, I'm very competitive. This summer was just a little bit different, you know. It kind of motivated me to be even better... "Obviously, be the best that I can be, take care of myself. This year, with my team, I think we did a huge step. But this is just the start, you know. I need to keep going. Can't stop." The Mavericks were not wrong to have concerns about Doncic's conditioning, it certainly has not been consistent throughout his career. (It's still a massive leap from having concerns to trading a top-five player in the world as he enters his prime because of it.) Doncic has improved his conditioning in the past, but due to injuries and other reasons, it has never stayed at the level Dallas' Harrison — a Kobe Bryant guy — expected. What should scare the Mavericks is that they have just become the motivation he needed to genuinely change. If the disrespect from Dallas, combined with being on a new team and watching LeBron James' commitment to his body and conditioning daily, changes Doncic's habits, then the Mavericks have unleashed a monster on the league. Doncic had spent the summer back in Europe with family and friends, but landed back in the United States in the last 48 hours for a Jordan Brand promotional shoe tour. After that tour, he returns to Slovenia to lead his national team in the EuroBasket that starts at the end of this month. Doncic is eligible for a contract extension this summer: On Aug. 2, the Lakers can offer him a four-year, $223 million extension. They will, and Doncic is expected to re-sign with the team, although most likely on a three-year, $165 million max contract (or three plus a player option) because in three years he will have reached 10 years of service in the league and then can sign for up to 35% of the salary cap (the most the Lakers could offer right now is 30%). Expect that deal to be finalized before the season starts (possibly this week, while he is in the USA on a shoe tour, or perhaps closer to Lakers training camp).

Titans waive WR selected with the 1st round pick acquired from Eagles in A.J. Brown trade

Four years after trading A.J. Brown to the Eagles for the No. 18 pick in the 2022 NFL draft, the Titans have waived former Arkansas WR Treylon Burks A review of the trade that involved Treylon Burks, who now has been released. Mike Vrabel is now with the New England Patriots, and the Titans' 2022 draft night trade of A.J. Brown to the Philadelphia Eagles played a significant role in the massive rebuild Tennessee has undergone since that time. In a move that was finally expected to elevate Jalen Hurts to another tier, the Eagles acquired Brown from the Titans for the No. 18 overall pick in the draft and another third-round pick. Tennessee used that No. 18 pick on then-Arkansas wide receiver Treylon Burks, who, after a slow start to his rookie season, had shown improvement and had 24 catches for 334 before a blowout win by Philadelphia over the Titans in November of 2022. Fast forward to 2025, and Brown has developed into a perennial All-Pro and arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL. Burks has been inconsistent and, after recently suffering a broken collarbone, was waived/injured by the Titans on Monday, the team announced. The @Titans have signed WR Ramel Keyton @ Titans have waived-injured WR Treylon In three seasons, Burks has played just 27 games (17 starts) and recorded 53 receptions for 699 yards and one touchdown. In his three seasons with the Eagles, Brown has played in and started 47 of a possible 51 games, recording 261 catches for 4,031 yards and 25 touchdowns, with an average of 15.6 yards per catch. Brown has earned three All-Pros during his tenure with the Eagles.

The Titans cutting Treylon Burks locks in the A.J. Brown trade as an all-time blunder

The Tennessee Titans finally admitted defeat on Monday to one of the worst NFL trades of the decade so far by waiving an injured Treylon Burks. Burks, the team's first-round wide receiver in the 2022 NFL Draft, has struggled mightily with injuries throughout his career. His recent fractured collarbone must have been the last straw for Tennessee. It's not Burks fault that he can't stay on the field, and his career trajectory is a tragic one to be sure. However, what the Titans did to acquire him will forever haunt the franchise. Trading away wide receiver A.J. Brown, who just won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles, is one of the great self-inflicted blunders of modern NFL times. As Fox Sports' Greg Auman notes, Brown's production (261 receptions, 4,031 yards and 25 touchdowns) blows away what Burks has been able to gain in his three seasons of limited availability (53 receptions, 599 yards, a lone touchdown). It doesn't take an expert to see the devastating discrepancies in production between the two players. The Titans return from the trade gave them three players that have now been cut (Burks, tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere and wideout Kyle Phillips) and starting slot cornerback Roger McCreary. McCreary is a solid player, but the rest of the return from this seismic trade is now out of Music City altogether. Brown is a superstar for Philadelphia and played an integral role in bringing another Lombardi to the City of Brotherly Love. Trading Brown basically sparked the end of the Mike Vrabel-Ryan Tannehill-Derrick Henry era of Titans success, and Burks is now the unfair poster child for why you don't trade proven talent for an unproven rookie. This Titans front office is the second since general manager Jon Robinson orchestrated the Brown trade in 2022. He lost his job later that year after the Titans slid into a ditch after three seasons of inspired play. It wasn't on this Tennessee regime to keep Burks around, particularly with a new injury. His cut is just a cruel facet of the business, as the Titans have a lot of young receivers to pair with new quarterback Cam Ward. The future has already started. Burks will probably latch on with a new team for a second chance, and it's hard not to root for him with what he's gone through. He didn't ask to be part of one of the worst NFL trades of the decade so far. You could argue this trade was worse than what the Denver Broncos gave up to get quarterback Russell Wilson. The Broncos eventually figured it out; the Titans have not just yet. Ward is their best chance to finally move past all of this. Nevertheless, the Eagles will fondly remember the night they got Brown. The Titans will forever regret pulling the level to send one of their best players away for an unproven talent. Their disastrous decision will forever stand as a painful cautionary tale for the rest of the league. Sometimes, you just have to pay your guys (hello, Washington Commanders, Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys). The grass isn't always greener on the other side.
