
Another 28 miners surface at Barberton's Sheba Mine
According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, mine security and law enforcement continue to monitor the situation, but the full extent remains unclear.

'The 28 suspects were arrested at the mine in Barberton, where 518 alleged illegal miners were taken into custody on Friday, bringing the total to 546. A firearm and ammunition were also recovered from one of the suspects, who will be charged accordingly,' he said.

Mdhluli added that it remains difficult to determine how many people might still be underground.
'We'll keep monitoring. As we're not there physically, I can't confirm whether anyone remains underground. The lack of definitive information highlights the undercover nature of these operations and the challenges authorities face in tackling them,' he said.
Meanwhile, the Barberton Magistrate's Court has granted bail of R2 000 each to 26 of the accused.
The decision was based on several factors, including that they have no prior convictions, fixed addresses and no pending cases. They were strongly warned against reoffending while on bail.

The state has indicated it will oppose bail for the remaining accused who have previous convictions or pending cases.
These individuals have been remanded in custody. The matter has been postponed to August 11 and 12 to allow for address verification and possible further bail applications.

Police chase follows R7.2k ATM robbery at Hazyview mall
A man was robbed of R7 200 by two armed suspects while withdrawing cash from an ATM at Hazyview Junction Mall on Tuesday night (August 5). According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the incident occurred at around 21:45. The victim was at a Capitec ATM when two men appeared and pointed a firearm at him. When Hazyview police and security teams pursued the suspects, their vehicle lost control and veered into a ditch near Numbi Park. One suspect managed to flee, but the injured man was cornered and arrested. He was taken to hospital in critical condition. Ndubane said the suspect is facing charges of attempted murder, robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm. Preliminary investigations revealed that the car had been hijacked in Hillbrow in July, and the firearm was reported stolen in Akasia, Pretoria, in May 2024. The investigation continues. Police have not confirmed whether the stolen cash has been recovered.

Sheba gold mine: 2 out of 24 illegal miners released on bail
BARBERTON - Two of the 24 illegal miners who resurfaced from Sheba gold mine in Barberton, Mpumalanga, on Monday have been released on bail. The pair, both South Africans with valid IDs and private lawyers, were each granted bail of R2,000. The other 22 remain in custody and will return to court next Wednesday. The 22 still behind bars are mostly foreign nationals without passports and they face additional immigration-related charges. All 24 are also charged with theft, trespassing and possession of mining and gold bearing equipment. Wednesday's proceedings were over in minutes after the magistrate mad e the postponement for bail verification and the appointment of legal representation. 'Accused number 20 and 21 in custody, your bail is fixed at R2000 each, normal bail conditions.' The group is part of more than 550 people detained at Sheba gold mine in the past week under Operation Vala Umgodi. Case against 24 Barberton illegal miners postponed
BARBETON -The case against 24 illegal miners who resurfaced from Sheba gold mine earlier this week has been postponed to next Wednesday for bail verification. The group is among more than 550 zama zamas detained in the past week, including 494 arrested during a mass police sweep last Friday. The miners made a brief appearance in the Barberton Magistrates Court on Wednesday. Monday's group of 24 is the third largest to resurface since last Friday's Operation Vala Umgodi, which targets illegal mining in the Barberton area. Another 30 were arrested the day after, many found hiding in the mine's tunnels. The 24, now before court, face multiple charges, including theft, trespassing and possession of mining and gold bearing equipment. The magistrate postponed the matter to allow police time to verify addresses and other bail information. "Your case is reminded until the 13th of August for the appointment of your attorneys.
