Olympic gold medalist ski jumpers on Norway team charged in equipment cheating scandal caught on video

CBS News12 hours ago
Two Olympic gold medalist ski jumpers and three staffers on the powerful Norway men's team were charged with ethics violations Monday after an investigation into alleged tampering with ski suits at the world championships.
The International Ski and Snowboard Federation said star ski jumpers Marius Lindvik and Johann André Forfang, two coaches and a member of the service staff were formally charged as part of an investigation into "equipment manipulation" at the Nordic worlds Norway hosted in March.
The five were all provisionally suspended in March pending an investigation, the BBC reported at the time.
Illegally modified suits can help athletes fly further with more aerodynamic resistance.
The allegations - backed by video footage and quick confessions by team officials - shook the tight-knit communities of ski jumping and Norwegian sports when they emerged on the final weekend in Trondheim.
No timetable was given for hearings or verdicts in a case that intensifies less than six months before the next Winter Olympics open in northern Italy.
Bans, fines and disqualification of results are on the slate of punishments open to the FIS Ethics Committee, the governing body said in a statement.
Lindvik's gold medal in the men's normal hill event at the worlds held in Trondheim, plus Norway's bronze in the men's team event on the large hill are clearly at risk.
FIS said the investigation conducted 38 witness interviews and examined 88 pieces of evidence, and that no one else will be charged in the case.
Lindvik and Forfang, who both were in the team that took bronze, denied involvement in March though were disqualified from the individual large hill event and suspended by FIS for the rest of the season. Their charges were signed off by the FIS ruling council, the governing body said.
The 27-year-old Lindvik has been expected to defend his Olympic title next year in the men's large hill event at the Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Games. Forfang, now 30, took team gold on the large hill and individual silver on the normal hill at the 2018 Olympics held in South Korea.
Admissions of guilt were made in March by head coach Magnus Brevik and equipment manager Adrian Livelten, who said suits were altered only before the men's large hill event.
"We regret it like dogs, and I'm terribly sorry that this happened," Brevik said at the time. A third team staffer, Thomas Lobben, also is now charged.
Speaking at the time the allegations emerged, FIS general manager Jan-Erik Aalbu said the team had "tried to cheat the system" by putting reinforced thread in the jumpsuits of Lindvik and Forfang, the BBC reported.
The manipulation was to increase the size of suits pre-approved and microchipped by FIS, and was captured on secretly filmed footage. It led to formal protests from the Austria, Slovenia and Poland teams.
The alterations could be confirmed only by tearing apart the seams of the crotch area on the Norwegian ski suits.
FIS said that its investigators looked at five key issues, whether: "coaches Magnus Brevig and Thomas Lobben and suit technician acted in violation of the rules in orchestrating the equipment manipulation; athletes Marius Lindvik and Johann André Forfang knowingly acted in contravention of relevant FIS rules; the conspiracy spread further in the team, either to other athletes or other staff members of the Norwegian NSA; the Norwegian team had engaged in the same or similar equipment violations in the past; and/or the conspiracy spread to other teams.
The case will be judged by three members of the ethics panel which must reach verdicts "no later than 30 days after the hearing process is concluded," FIS said.
FIS has already tightened up its rules on ski jump suits, something which caused a spate of disqualifications when athletes gathered for the first competition of the new season Saturday. FIS said that was down to technical issues and it didn't suspect "ill intent."

Centre-back Daland in talks to leave Cardiff

Jesper Daland looks set to leave Cardiff City after head coach Brian Barry-Murphy revealed the centre-back has held talks with other clubs. The Bluebirds paid around £3.5m to sign the Norwegian from Cercle Brugge last year. But following Cardiff's relegation to League One, Daland has only made one substitute appearance. The 25-year-old was left out of the squad for Tuesday's EFL Cup win over Swindon Town because of his transfer discussions with other clubs. Barry-Murphy did not know whether Daland will be leaving on a permanent or loan basis, but said: "Jesper's in conversations with other clubs, so he's not available." Asked if a deal was close to being completed, he said: "I don't know. I don't know how close." Cardiff have only signed one player this summer, goalkeeper Nathan Trott on loan from Copenhagen, while 11 have left since their relegation from the Championship. Sargent opened the scoring for Norwich City in a 2-1 win over Watford, smashing home a low-driven effort in the first half for his second goal in as many games to start the 2025-26 season. Wright then set up Coventry City's decisive strike in a 1-0 victory over Luton Town, whipping in a pinpoint cross for Ellis Simms to finish. The 65th annual Carabao Cup saw several Americans in the English Championship take center stage, with members of the USMNT player pool making a strong early impression. WATCH WRIGHT'S ASSIST THE BIGGER PICTURE In other fixtures, striker Damion Downs earned his first start for Southampton and helped the Saints to a 1-0 win. Journalist – Newcastle Utd lead West Ham in race for Aston Villa midfielder

Jacob Ramsey's Contract Stalemate Opens Transfer Window Opportunities Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey is entering the final two years of his current contract, with multiple offers for an extension yet to reach agreement. With negotiations stalling, both player and club are said to be exploring alternative options, and a sale this summer is increasingly viewed as the most practical outcome. For Villa, such a move would remove uncertainty ahead of the new campaign. For Ramsey, it would present a chance to secure a longer-term future elsewhere, ideally in a project aligned with his career ambitions. Newcastle Utd Interest Strengthens Amid Competition Newcastle Utd have maintained long-term admiration for the midfielder, having made an approach in January 2024. The Tyneside club's leadership, alongside head coach Eddie Howe, remain convinced that Ramsey could play a significant role in their midfield evolution. Sources indicate that Newcastle's vision, coupled with the prospect of working under Howe, holds considerable appeal for the player. Talks between Newcastle and Villa are understood to be progressing, with an openness from all parties to reach a mutually beneficial agreement before the window closes. West Ham Maintain Pursuit Despite Player's Preference While Newcastle appear to be in the driving seat, West Ham United remain a serious contender. Their manager Graham Potter is believed to hold Ramsey in high regard, with the midfielder reciprocating that respect. However, industry voices suggest West Ham may face an uphill battle to change Ramsey's preference, particularly given Newcastle's established interest and ongoing discussions with Villa. Clubs from overseas have also monitored developments, but the strongest momentum lies within the Premier League. Market Context and Newcastle's Transfer Priorities This summer has presented challenges for Newcastle's recruitment, with several high-profile targets moving elsewhere. Nonetheless, the club has already secured deals for Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale, while negotiations for Malick Thiaw are nearing completion. Ramsey's potential arrival is viewed internally as a priority, addressing depth and quality in central areas while complementing Newcastle's broader squad-building strategy. Should talks with Villa progress smoothly, the move could be finalised in the coming weeks, shaping the club's midfield for seasons to come.
