Newbury BID working to 'bring Paddington statue back'
A Paddington Bear statue that was damaged and taken from a bench could be restored to the site.The front of the sculpture was cut away and removed from its seat in Northbrook Street, Newbury, Berkshire at about 02:00 GMT on Sunday, according to Thames Valley Police. It was later recovered.Ashley Morris, vice chair of Newbury Business Improvement District (BID), said: "It's still very new... but we're absolutely talking to StudioCanal and Premier Comms about bringing him back and restoring him."Two men have been charged with criminal damage.
Mr Norris said the statue had become "part of the town" since it was unveiled in October 2024."Everyone knows and loves Paddington," he added."We want him to carry on being here part of Newbury and that's what we're going to work towards."The remains of the statue have been covered with a tent, with some people leaving sandwiches and jars of marmalade - Paddington's signature snack - outside.
Newbury was the home town of Paddington creator Michael Bond.Newbury BID brought the statue to the town, in partnership with StudioCanal, as part of its national Paddington Visits trail.It was one of 23 models celebrating the children's character placed across the UK last year ahead of the launch of the film Paddington in Peru.
Thames Valley Police said the statue was due to be handed back to the owners for its restoration.The force said on Monday that Daniel Heath, 22, from Thornton, West Yorkshire, and William Lawrence, 22 from Enderby, Leicestershire, were both charged with one count of criminal damage in connection with the incident.They were released on bail until 25 March.

Man charged after Chesham pedestrian shot at from car
A man has been charged with attempted murder after a pedestrian was shot at from a Valley Police said the victim, a man aged in his 30s, was targeted on Broad Street in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, at about 18:10 BST on Tuesday before a silver coloured VW Scirocco was driven from the scene. Hundreds line streets to pay tribute to 'hero' firefighter killed in Bicester

The 30-year-old was given a full ceremonial fire service funeral, with mourners paying tribute to her bravery, fearlessness and dedication to Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Ms Logan's coffin, draped in the Union flag, was carried atop an aerial ladder platform fire engine through the streets of Bicester in Oxfordshire on Saturday morning. Hundreds of people gathered along the route in respectful silence while uniformed firefighters marched behind the coffin. Ms Logan was killed in a fire at the Bicester Motion site on May 15, alongside fellow firefighter Martyn Sadler, 38, and local businessman Dave Chester, 57. The cortege paused outside Bicester fire station just after 10 am, where firefighters stood to attention for a minute's silence. Ten fire crews were called to tackle the blaze, and thick black smoke could be seen rising into the sky. Two other firefighters sustained serious injuries in the blaze. Thames Valley Police said post-mortem examinations suggested the three victims sustained injuries caused by the collapse of the structure, but an investigation by the force's major crime unit is ongoing, alongside inquiries by the Health and Safety Executive and fire investigators. Ms Logan was the second female firefighter to die on duty in peacetime, following Fleur Lombard, 21, who died in Bristol in 1996. Tributes poured in after the tragedy, with Ms Logan's family describing her as their 'hero'. 'Her bravery and fearlessness shone through right until the end,' they said. 'She will always be our hero, and we are so immensely proud of her. Forever in our hearts.' More Trending Books of condolence were opened across Bicester in the days following the fire, and two gold plaques were placed at the scene of the blaze, signed: 'Love from the Bicester community.' Mr Sadler's family said firefighting 'was always in his blood', adding: 'Our world has fallen apart and our hearts are completely broken, but somewhere in amongst it all we are immensely proud of him and his unwavering bravery.' Mr Chester, a father of two, was described by his family as 'Bicester born and bred with a quirky sense of humour'. 'He was not a victim but a hero.
