Swedish police arrest teen after deadly shooting

UPPSALA, Sweden: Swedish police have arrested a teen suspect after three youths aged from 15 to 20 were killed in a shooting at a hair salon, authorities said Wednesday, amid rising concern over gang violence in the Scandinavian nation.
Tuesday's shooting took place in broad daylight a day before the Valborg spring festival in the university city of Uppsala, which draws more than 100,000 people for bonfires and celebrations, many of them students.
"One person has been arrested suspected of murder," police commander Erik Akerlund told reporters Wednesday, with prosecutors saying the suspect was 16.
Swedish media reported that at least one of the dead had connections to a crime gang, though police would not confirm those reports.
"That is something we are obviously looking into, but we don't want to commit ourselves to only that" possibility, Uppsala police spokesman Stefan Larsson told AFP.
Uppsala is home base for Sweden's two most notorious gang leaders, Ismael Abdo and Rawa Majid, who are both believed to be orchestrating operations from abroad.
The Scandinavian country has struggled for years to rein in shootings and bombings between rival gangs.
Akerlund said several people "considered of interest in the investigation" had been brought in for questioning.
He said police had obtained camera footage from the scene and "secured a lot of evidence."
Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer has called the killings "extremely serious", while Uppsala's mayor Erik Pelling told AFP he was "shocked and dismayed" by events.
"I am also angry that it could happen," he added.
"We are forced to live with these crimes. I am frustrated that we have not been able to tackle this problem more effectively," Pelling said.
Sweden has struggled for years to rein in gang shootings and bombings.
On Sunday, a mother and her young child were severely injured when a homemade bomb tore through their home, media reported, adding that a neighbour suspected of ties to criminal gangs had been the real target.
Earlier this month, two people were killed in a suspected gang fight in Gothenburg, while a renowned rapper was shot dead in a gang battle in the city last year.
Perpetrators are often young teens hired as contract killers because they are under 15, the age of criminal responsibility in Sweden.
The number of reported gang deaths fell last year however.
In the country of 10.6 million people, 92 killings were recorded in 2024, 29 fewer than 2023 – the lowest level since 2014, according to official data.
There were also 296 reported shootings, down a fifth on the year before, according to the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention (Bra).
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's centre-right minority government, which is backed in parliament by the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, came to power in 2022 with a vow to get tough on crime.
Sweden was also rocked by its worst mass shooting in February when 35-year-old Rickard Andersson entered the Campus Risbergska adult education centre in the city of Orebro and shot dead 10 people before turning the gun on himself.--AFP

Mohd Azlan was speaking at the opening of the state Anti-Drug Day (HAD) commemoration programme at the Youth and Sports Complex (KBS) here today. He said drug abuse not only hampers productivity but also has a long-term impact on the well-being of the population. "Therefore, the prevention and awareness approach needs to start as early as possible and ideally it should begin at the family institution," he said. On the commemoration, he said more than 500 people participated in the programme at KBS to provide awareness and strengthen the commitment of all parties in fighting drug abuse. The programme featured beneficial activities such as an anti-drug slogan competition, a colouring contest, futsal tournament and an exhibition by government agencies. - BERNAMA More Like This

Thunberg accuses Israel of kidnap after Gaza aid boat intercepted

PARIS: Swedish activist Greta Thunberg on Tuesday accused Israel of 'kidnapping us in international waters and taking us against our will to Israel' after security forces intercepted a boat carrying humanitarian aid bound for Gaza. 'This is yet another intentional violation of rights that is added to the list of countless other violations that Israel is committing,' Thunberg, 22, told reporters on arrival at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris after being deported from Israel. She stressed that her own experience was 'nothing compared to what the Palestinians are going through'. Of the 12 people on board the Madleen carrying food and supplies for Gaza, five French activists were taken into custody after they refused to leave Israel voluntarily. But Thunberg, who rose to fame as a schoolgirl activist against climate change and seeks to avoid flying because of its environmental impact, was deported by Israel on a commercial flight of national airline El Al bound for Paris. 'This is not the real story. The real story is there is a genocide going on in Gaza and systematic starvation,' said Thunberg. Several rights groups including Amnesty International have accused Israel of genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza but Israel vehemently rejects the term. The vessel carrying French, German, Brazilian, Turkish, Swedish, Spanish and Dutch activists had the stated aim of delivering humanitarian aid and breaking the Israeli blockade on the Palestinian territory. Israel intercepted the Madleen about 185 kilometres (115 miles) west of the coast of Gaza. Thunberg said what happened to the vessel was a 'continuation and violation of international law and war crimes that are being systematically committed by Israel by not letting aid in' to Gaza. 'This was a mission of attempting to once again bring aid to Gaza and send solidarity. And saw we cannot,' she said. She also denounced what she termed the 'silence and passivity' of governments worldwide over what was taking place in Gaza. 'There are no words to describe the betrayal that is happening every day by our own governments,' she said. Admitting she was 'desperately in need of a shower', Thunberg vowed to carry on her campaign. 'We will not stop. We will try every single day to demand an end to the atrocities Israel is carrying out'. The October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel that triggered the war resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official figures. The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza says at least 54,981 people, the majority civilians, have been killed in the territory since the start of the war. The UN considers these figures reliable. Out of 251 taken hostage during the Hamas attack, 54 are still held in Gaza including 32 the Israeli military says are dead.

Hiker dies in Greece bear encounter

THESSALONIKI: A veteran Greek hiker died Tuesday in a ravine fall in the north of the country after a bear encounter, rescuers said. Christos Stavrianidis was declared dead at Kavala hospital shortly after he was found in the 800-metre (2,600-foot) ravine in Fraktou forest in northeastern Greece, the Ekav national emergency centre told AFP. Stavrianidis was in the forest with another experienced hiker, Dimitris Kioroglou, when the incident happened on Monday. 'I suddenly saw a bear which attacked me,' Kioroglou told news portal NewsIT. 'My dog delayed it for a few seconds. I used pepper spray, and it headed to where my friend was and knocked him into the ravine,' he said. Panos Stefanou, spokesman for Greece wildlife group Arcturos, said the bear was likely defending itself. 'This is more a defensive behaviour, not an attack. The bear is trying to push back what it sees as a threat,' he told state TV ERT. The hikers were heading towards the remains of a Greek warplane that crashed in the area some seven decades earlier. Stavrianidis had found the plane deep in the forest last August. He was leading efforts to identify a more accessible route to its location to enable more people to visit the wreckage. 'It's a beautiful discovery that deserves to be viewed on location... the fuselage is nearly intact,' he had told a local journalist last year. 'It's a treasure of nature and should be left (in the forest),' he had said.
