Anwar: Inclusivity and sustainability must anchor Asean's future
KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 — The principles of 'Inclusivity and Sustainability,' the theme of Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship this year, must be embedded at the very heart of the regional bloc's agenda and vision, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
In his opening remarks at the 46th Asean Summit, here today, he said the theme is a strategic and value-driven proposition.
'It speaks not only to our aspirations, but to our obligations. It is anchored in the conviction that Asean's future must rest on the twin pillars of equitable, sustainable growth and enduring resilience,' he said.
Anwar also expressed his appreciation for the support of all Asean leaders in ensuring that Malaysia's Chairmanship advances the Asean Community Vision 2045, which will be launched today.
Heads of state and government that were present were Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto, Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet, Laos' Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, and Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
Also present were Timor Leste's Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao as observer, and Asean's Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn.
This year marks Malaysia's fifth time chairing the regional bloc, having previously held the Asean chairmanship in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015.
In conjunction with the summit, two pivotal high-level engagements, namely the 2nd Asean-GCC Summit and the inaugural Asean-GCC-China Summit, will also be convened, serving as strategic platforms to advance regional and inter-regional cooperation. — Bernama

KTM Komuter, ETS timetables tweaked for upgrading works from Saturday
KTMB had postponed the upgrading works to ensure smooth travel for passengers in the Klang Valley during the 46th Asean Summit. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) will carry out upgrading works to its signalling system along the route between Kepong Station and Salak Selatan Station from Saturday to June 2. There will be adjustments to the timetables for KTM Komuter services in the Klang Valley and electric train services (ETS) during the period. KTM Komuter services on the Pulau Sebang-Batu Caves-Pulau Sebang, and Tanjung Malim-KL Sentral-Tanjung Malim routes, as well as ETS services are expected to see delays of up to 50 minutes from their original schedules. In addition, two ETS services – EG9425 (Padang Besar to Segamat) and EG9321 (Butterworth to Segamat) – will have platform changes at the KL Sentral and Kuala Lumpur Stations, but only on May 31. 'Officers will be on duty at the stations to guide and assist passengers to the correct platforms,' it said. Previously, KTMB postponed the upgrading works to ensure smooth travel for passengers in the Klang Valley during the 46th Asean Summit. This was after the closure of several major roads in the Klang Valley, and the government's recommendation for the rakyat to use public transport to ease traffic congestion.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi aims to send more Mara scholarship students to the UK after the agency's decision to stop sending them to the US from this year. Zahid said Washington's changes in higher education policy, particularly involving the intake of foreign students, should be seen as an opportunity to explore higher education in other nations. The rural and regional development minister, whose ministry oversees Mara, said this includes exploring new opportunities in the UK, Bernama reported. 'We know that Mara has decided to stop sending its sponsored students to the US. My approach is this: when there's a threat, there's always an opportunity. We have to look at the other side of the coin. 'In situations like this, I believe the UK education system, which we are familiar with, can be put to good use,' said Zahid, who is on a five-day working trip to the UK until Wednesday. Yesterday, Mara chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said sponsored students will not be sent to the US from this year in view of new policies and guidelines by US president Donald Trump. He said sending these students to countries like the UK, New Zealand, Australia, Japan and even China would be cheaper than studying in the US. The Trump administration recently ordered a halt to visa processing for all foreign students and is considering steps to screen new applicants based on their social media posts.

No talks on ‘appointed' deputy president's post, says PKR Youth chief
PKR Youth chief Kamil Munim said the creation of such a post has not been discussed. PETALING JAYA : PKR has not discussed the creation of an appointed post of deputy president purportedly proposed by Nurul Izzah Anwar, says youth chief Kamil Munim. 'As far as I know, such a post has not been discussed,' he told FMT. This comes after Rafizi Ramli, who lost the race for the PKR deputy presidency to Nurul Izzah, claimed that she had proposed the creation of the post for him to fill. Rafizi said he turned down the offer, which was made when they met before the PKR elections, adding that he would not be interested even if there was a post for an 'appointed party president'. Nurul Izzah did not confirm or deny making the proposal, but said she simply wanted to help the party close ranks and bolster its values after the internal elections. The newly elected PKR deputy president also said: 'I believe that matters spoken in confidence between friends should remain between them.' Meanwhile, PKR central leadership council member Nor Azrina Surip said Rafizi's decision to turn down the purported offer should be respected by all. 'The party's struggle does not depend on any one individual or group,' said the Kedah PKR chief.
