Former Florida football linebacker Shemar James has officially made the leap to the NFL, selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round (pick No. 152) of the 2025 NFL draft.
James, a three-year standout for the Gators, capped off a decorated college career by hearing his name called after a 2024 season that showcased his leadership and playmaking ability.
The Mobile, Alabama native was a team captain in Gainesville, and it showed in his production: 64 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery across 13 starts.
A former Freshman All-SEC honoree, James consistently rose to the occasion against elite competition. His performance against the LSU Tigers–racking up 11 tackles, two sacks and earning SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors–highlighted why NFL scouts pegged him as a top linebacker prospect.
James impressed throughout the pre-draft process, standing out at the NFL Combine and the Reese's Senior Bowl. Known for his sideline-to-sideline speed, coverage skills and physicality at 6-foot-1-inch and 229 pounds, he fits the modern NFL linebacker mold perfectly.
Across his career with the Orange and Blue, James totaled 166 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, five sacks and three forced turnovers, despite a season-ending injury midway through 2023 that only fueled his comeback story.
A former five-star recruit and one of the top linebackers nationally out of high school, James chose Florida over offers from the Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs and Florida State Seminoles.

NFL insider on Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson's shoulder injury
NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero provided an update on Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, who is going to miss minicamp this coming week with a shoulder injury. As Shane Steichen described prior to Thursday's final OTA practice, Richardson experienced shoulder pain the week prior. Upon further evaluation, the testing revealed that the pain was related to the same AC joint that Richardson injured during his rookie season. Advertisement Steichen did not put a timeline on Richardson's return, other than saying they hope to have him back at some point during training camp. But among NFL insiders, the belief seems to be that Richardson will be ready for training camp. On a recent appearance on the 'Rich Eisen Show,' Pelissero provided additional insight regarding Richardson. "They just made the decision, 'hey, we're going to back off him right now,' Pelissero said. "Shane Steichen saying he'll be back sometime in training camp is not really what I want to hear if I'm somebody rooting for Anthony Richardson to beat out Daniel Jones for that job. "Now I was separately told yesterday that he'll 1,000 percent be ready for training camp, but that doesn't necessarily mean the Colts will let him loose. You're going to want to ramp him up after he misses the end of OTAs and minicamp. You're not just going to go out and have him throw 600 balls on the first day of practice. So these are reps that now go to Daniel Jones, and he gets more of an opportunity." Advertisement Pelissero continued: "I know that the coaches in Indianapolis were really excited at the prospect of bringing in Daniel Jones, even though they've got this remarkable ball of clay in Anthony Richardson. It's a ball of clay that's spent so much time in the training room over the past couple of years that it's cost him those reps that he sorely needed as a young player who had only started 13 college games and really hadn't played a ton." In addition to Pelissero's reporting that Richardson will be ready to go for the start of training camp, which for the Colts begins on July 22nd, it's important to note that there may be an easing back in process for him. So even though he's on the practice field on Day 1, it may not mean he's leading the first team offense and alternating reps with Jones. Steichen alluded to that during Thursday's press conference, saying that the team will "ease him back into throwing" once he returns. Once a full-go, Richardson will have the opportunity to compete with Jones for the starting job, but winning it does become more difficult with the time he's missed during OTAs, minicamp, along with potentially being limited early on in training camp, if that is how things play out. The Philadelphia Phillies placed starting pitcher Aaron Nola on the injured list with a right ankle sprain in May. Since he's been out, the Phillies have cobbled together innings from bullpen games, Taijuan Walker, and, fortunately, the emergence of Mick Abel. Advertisement But Nola suffered a setback in the form of a different issue that popped up last week. Nola had suffered a fracture right rib and has since been deemed to be out until at least mid-July, and after the All-Star break. Ahead of the Phillies' series against the Toronto Blue Jays, Nola spoke with reporters for the first time since his setback. There, he broke his silence on how he's feeling and where he stands in his recovery process. On Pattison on Twitter/X shared Nola's comments on his injury, setback, and how he's dealing with it going forward. "It definitely wasn't the news I was expecting," Nola said. "I felt it a little more than I had in my last bullpen... Just did an MRI, came back with a stress fracture. So it's just trying to do as much as I can with trainers to heal, and take time for it to heal." Advertisement Nola was then asked a follow-up question about whether he knew where his stress fracture originated, and if the bullpen session was a catalyst for the injury. "Honestly, I don't really know," Nola said. "I guess it just came from throwing. I'm not really sure how it comes about. I'm not really sure, I've never had a stress fracture in my rib before, this is really new to me." She provided more context on Nola's feelings amid the injury and his original ankle issue, which landed him on the injured list. Advertisement "Aaron Nola said he was told it was a stress fracture in his right rib," wrote Varnes. "Said he feels discomfort when breathing heavy or throwing. The initial injury that sent him to the IL, a right ankle sprain, is feeling better." While it's encouraging to hear the original right ankle issue is feeling better, the update from Nola on his fractured rib is an unfortunate setback amid his recovery. This update from Nola is a tough one for the Phillies. After he signed a massive $172 million deal in the offseason, Nola was expected to be a huge part of the rotation. But this injury and his 6.16 ERA start have made the contract look like a poor decision. While there is still plenty of time to rebound, Nola isn't expected back into the rotation anytime soon.
