PENAMPANG: Public members are invited to attend and enliven the Penampang District-level Kaamatan Festival celebration to be held at Buhavan Square in Donggongon here this Sunday (18 May). Penampang District Council (MPP) Francis Chong said this year's celebration carries the theme 'Kaamatan Montok Toinsanan' or 'Kaamatan for All', reflecting the spirit of unity and inclusiveness among the people of Sabah.
Advertisement 'MPP warmly invites all residents of Penampang and its surrounding areas to come together and join in the festivities of this year's Kaamatan celebration,' he said after chairing the Penampang District-level Kaamatan Festival Coordination Meeting. The opening ceremony will be officiated by Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick, who is also Penampang MP. The ceremony will also be streamed live on MPP's official Facebook page. A variety of exciting activities await visitors, including government service exhibitions, sales of agricultural and fisheries products, cultural performances, traditional sports, local artist showcases, lucky draws and a special appearance by the winner of Sugandoi Penampang 2025. The main highlight will be the Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan beauty pageant at the district level, where the cultural queen will be selected to represent Penampang at the State-level competition in Hongkod Koisaan. Meanwhile, the Sugandoi Singing Competition at the district level was held earlier on May 11 at Msgr. Wachter Hall, St. Michael's Parish Centre, here at 7.30 pm. In a statement posted on his social media, Fahmi recounted arriving at KLIA2 at around 7.30am to catch a 9.35am flight for a short two-day trip to attend a concert featuring South Korean band Slant and Singaporean act Sial. Advertisement But at the international departure counter, Immigration officers told him he had been flagged and needed to wait at their office. 'I was asked to wait while they checked with TCO (Travel Control Office/Order). Then they took my passport and IC for photocopying. They also wanted printed copies of my boarding pass and e-ticket, even though I had them on my phone,' he wrote, adding that with only 10 minutes left before boarding, an airport staff member helped him get the documents printed at a hotel nearby. When he returned to Immigration with the documents, Fahmi said an officer told him, 'Bukit Aman has not given clearance for you to leave the country.' He said no explanation was provided and he was escorted out of the departure area. Advertisement Fahmi is well known for his satirical illustrations that often critique political leaders and institutions. He believes the ban is linked to his artwork criticising the recent appointment of former Sabah chief minister Tun Musa Aman as the state's new Yang di-Pertua Negeri. Just weeks earlier, on May 29, the Sabah Immigration Department had denied Fahmi entry into the state under Section 65(1)(a) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. He said he was flown back to Kuala Lumpur the same day without further explanation. That incident followed his earlier arrest by Sabah police in February this year over another satirical post. Authorities had opened investigations under the Sedition Act for allegedly insulting the royal institution. 'Last week I was blacklisted from entering Sabah. This week, I'm blacklisted from leaving the country,' he wrote. Crocker Range Festival set to return June 26

KENINGAU: The Crocker Range Festival (TCRF) is set to return for its 8th season with a vibrant four-day celebration from June 26 to 29 at Dataran Keningau, featuring a dynamic mix of cultural showcases and community programmes. The event is expected to draw both local and national attention, especially from tourists and culture enthusiasts, with its focus on celebrating the rich ethnic heritage of Sabah's interior. First Unduk Ngadau commemorative stamps

PENAMPANG: History was made when the first Unduk Ngadau, the late Yong Mee Lan, was honoured with a commemorative stamp, an esteemed recognition now available at post offices across Sabah. The tribute, celebrating her contribution as the first native Sino-Kadazan Unduk Ngadau, marked 65 years since she paved the way for generations of harvest queens. It also highlighted another historical milestone for Sabah, as the Unduk Ngadau beauty pageant remained the longest-running competition in Malaysia since its inception in 1960. Her son, Danny Eber expressed gratitude for the recognition given to his mother. 'We are utterly grateful and happy our mother was honoured by having her photo on a stamp as a remembrance.
