HP OmniBook 5 series laptops promise unbelievable battery life at a $799 starting price

Tom's Guide19-05-2025

The new HP OmniBook 5 series might be the best value laptops of the year. Unveiled during Computex 2025, these Snapdragon X machines promise unbelievable battery life, strong performance, and AI features. Best of all, the OmniBook 5 series laptops start at $799.
Getting into specifics, HP announced the OmniBook 5 14 and OmniBook 5 16, which are 14- and 16-inch laptops, respectively. Available configurations will utilize the entry-level Snapdragon X and Snapdragon X Plus 8-core processors, making them AI laptops capable of running AI tasks on-device.
And like last year's OmniBooks, these laptops will be thin and light devices tailor-made to take around your home or across the world.

The big story here is HP's claim of 34-hour battery life. The longest-lasting laptop we've tested is the Dell XPS 13 with Snapdragon X Elite, which lasted for an incredible 19 hours and 41 minutes in our battery test. We'll have to test one of the new OmniBooks to see if they can hit 34 hours, but even if they fall short of that, they might still endure more than 20 hours.
Despite the promised long battery life, HP OmniBook 5 laptops boast impressive specs. This includes a 2K OLED display, which you don't usually see on laptops in this price range. These notebooks also have a 1080p webcam and can support a single 5K external or dual 4K display. Its dual speakers, two discrete amplifiers and AI-powered noise cancelling should let you sound nice and clear during video calls.
As always, we'll need to get these HP OmniBook 5 series laptops in for testing to see their capabilities. Based on what HP has announced, they could be fantastic laptops for folks who need a reliable machine to get work done on. And if we see anything close to 34-hour battery life, we might have a new reigning champ in that category.
The HP OmniBook 5 14 with Snapdragon will arrive sometime in June at Amazon and Micro Center. In July, you can also get a unit at HP's website and Costco. The HP OmniBook 5 16 should arrive in July with a starting price of $849.

Court denies Apple appeal in Epic Games case, keeping App Store changes in place

Apple was dealt a blow in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on Wednesday, as a panel of judges denied the company's emergency application to halt changes to its App Store that resulted from the company's legal battle with Epic Games. Apple "bears the burden of showing that the circumstances justify an exercise of [our] discretion," according to the order. "After reviewing the relevant factors, we are not persuaded that a stay is appropriate." Last month, the iPhone maker asked the appeals court to pause an order from U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers that said that Apple could no longer charge a commission on payment links inside its apps nor tell developers how the links should look. Apple said the ruling from the judge could cost the company "substantial sums." The ruling has already shifted the economics of app development in the U.S. Developers including Amazon and Spotify have been able to update their apps to avoid Apple's 15% to 30% commission and direct customers to their own websites for payment. Amazon's iPhone Kindle app now shows an orange "Get Book" button that links to The rejection of Apple's stay signals that recent changes under the order can stay in place. Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that Apple would appeal Rogers' ruling. In April, Rogers found that Apple had violated her original court order from the Epic Games trial, which was originally decided in 2021, that forced Apple to make limited changes to its link-out policy. She issued a new, more expansive ruling, that told Apple to immediately stop imposing its commissions. The judge also alleged that Apple had misled the court. "We are disappointed with the decision not to stay the district court's order, and we'll continue to argue our case during the appeals process," an Apple spokesperson said in a statement. "As we've said before, we strongly disagree with the district court's opinion. Our goal is to ensure the App Store remains an incredible opportunity for developers and a safe and trusted experience for our users." CNBC has reached out to Epic Games for comment.

Save $59 on the Ember Tumbler and keep your coffee hot anywhere!

We often feature the Ember Mug 2 in our deals, but there is one major downside to that model. It isn't really made to be taken with you out and about. The Ember Tumbler is the best solution if you want to take your hot drinks out of the home or office. The thing is, I am not happy about paying $179 for it. That said, it's on sale, and you can currently get it for $119.99! Buy the Ember Tumbler for $119.99 ($59.01 off) This offer is available from Amazon. It's only available in Slate Black. If you want to take your coffee on the go, Ember has two options. The Ember Tumbler is the biggest, though, making it the most convenient option for coffee and tea lovers. It can hold 16 ounces, and the top can be sealed. The unit comes with two lids, one of which includes a handle, and the other one has a sipping slider. If you don't know about Ember mugs, these are smart mugs. They can keep your drink hot, at the perfect temperature, which you can pick in the official app. In the case of the Ember Tumbler, this temperature can range between 120 and 145 degrees Fahrenheit. It has an internal battery, which can last three hours on a full charge. This makes it an excellent option for commutes, picnics, and more. Especially if you can have a charging base at home, another at the office, or wherever you know you can recharge. It's a pretty nice tumbler, and it has an IPX7 rating, so you can safely wash it. In fact, you can submerge it as deep as one meter! I love how smart these things are. For starters, you can control the temperature, LED light, and more with the app. It can also sense when you are using it or pour liquid on it, and turn on by itself. The unit will remember your previously set temperature and default to it. Additionally, it will know when there are no liquids in it or you haven't used it in two hours and turn itself off. It's a seamless experience! I have the Ember Mug 2 14oz and absolutely love it. This one is bigger and much more portable, so it's even better! Though a bit pricier than one would usually pay for a mug or thermos, any coffee or tea lover will deem every penny worth it. Especially if discounted, such as today. At $119.99, it is only slightly pricier than the regular Ember Mug 2, so it's a worthy upgrade.

Reddit Sues Anthropic Over AI Training Breach

Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) has filed a federal lawsuit against Anthropic, the Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)-backed creator of the Claude large language models, accusing the AI company of using Reddit's data without a license. The civil suit, reported by the Wall Street Journal, claims Anthropic trained its models on Reddit user content without permission and hit the platform's servers more than 100,000 times. According to the filing in California, Reddit attempted to negotiate a data licensing agreement with Anthropic but those discussions failed. Reddit has struck similar licensing deals with Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) and OpenAI. It argues that Anthropic knowingly used its platform to build AI products without securing the proper rights or user consent. The legal move comes shortly after Anthropic released new modelsClaude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4aimed at advancing AI capabilities in coding, reasoning, and agent-based tasks. Shares of Reddit rose 7.5% in Wednesday afternoon trading following the announcement. This article first appeared on GuruFocus.
