LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – A new Urgent Care is now open in Hampden County.

The community got together to celebrate the opening of a new facility in Longmeadow. Local lawmakers and health experts gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday afternoon at the Longmeadow Shops on Bliss Road.
They told 22News that there's a need for more medical resources in our area, as three local Urgent Care Centers closed more than two years ago. Baystate Health Urgent Care Centers in Longmeadow, Feeding Hills, and Westfield shut their doors in 2023.
'We have a shortage of primary care doctors here in western Massachusetts. So, having an Urgent Care facility like this in Longmeadow can help to bridge that gap,' said State Senator Jake Oliveira.
'I think one of the big things that separates us is that everyone who works for us has a background in working in the emergency department. We think that skill set, ability to help others gives us that upper hand to manage patients appropriately,' said Michael Cobill, CEO, Pioneer Health MSO.
This new location will also create new jobs, helping to benefit the economy.

ICE arrest of Milford student causes community uproar
MILFORD, Mass. (WWLP) – ICE arrests are ramping up around the country, and here in Massachusetts, a detained Milford High School student is drawing national attention. The community in Milford was left confused and outraged, and now, school leaders are speaking out against actions taken by ICE. This comes after students in Milford walked out of school in protest, demanding freedom and justice for their detained classmate and their educators are following. Operation Patriot nets 1,500 arrested by ICE in Massachusetts In a statement, the Massachusetts Teachers Association condemned ICE's 'cruel and inhumane actions,' calling for Milford High School junior Marcelo Gomes Da Silva's immediate release. They're calling on leaders at every level to ensure their schools remain safe spaces of learning, belonging, and safety for all students. 'He was doing everything his parents wanted him to do, going to practice, going to school,' said Massachusetts Education Justice Alliance Executive Director Vatsady Sivongxay. The Milford Teachers Association is also saying their students are more than just an immigration status, ' we call on leaders at every level to ensure our schools remain safe spaces of learning, belonging and safety for all students – not hunting grounds for ICE agents.' Marcelo Gomes Da Silva is being held in the Burlington Detention Center. He is scheduled for an initial hearing at the Chelmsford Immigration Court on Thursday. His lawyer said they will be requesting his release from ICE custody on bond. Two arrested during anti-dirt bike detail in Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Two Springfield men were arrested during an anti-dirt bike public safety detail last Friday. In a news release from the Springfield Police Department, officers were called to Laconia Street for a report of a dirt bike disturbance. Upon arrival, they spoke with 29-year-old Luis Rivera of Springfield, informing him that if he rode his dirt bike on the street, he was subject to arrest. Hampden County leaders announce illegal dirt bike enforcement Police say Riveria then sped past the officer on the dirt bike. At around 4:40 p.m., officers located Rivera at a gas station on Boston Road, where police seized the dirt bike, and he was arrested and charged with the following: Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License Snow-Recreation Vehicle – Public Way Violation Motorcycle Equipment Violation In the area of Bay and Girard Streets, at around 6:10 p.m. officers observed an electric off-highway vehicle, later identified as 37-year-old Gamalier Acosta of Springfield. They later saw Acosta riding it with two small children without any helmets. Officers located Acosta near the intersection of Bay and Catharine Streets. The off-highway vehicle was seized, and he was arrested and charged with the following: Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License Snow/Recreation Vehicle – Public Way Violation Snow/Recreation Vehicle – Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle Snow/Recreation Vehicle – Helmet Violation Snow/Recreation Vehicle – Unregistered Arrest Warrant The police conduct these details to deter public safety hazards to themselves and other motorists and pedestrians. It is illegal to ride a dirt bike or any off-highway vehicle anywhere within the city of Springfield. In April, the city announced a new task force that will bring more law enforcement patrols and resources like drones to reduce the use of illegal dirt bikes and off-highway vehicles (OHVs) on the streets. 'We can find them where they're being housed, and then we're going to grab them, warrant, we're going to hold them,' said Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno.
