Gaza truce talks in the balance as Israel and Hamas trade blame - War on Gaza

Gaza ceasefire talks hung in the balance as Hamas and Israel accused the other of blocking attempts to strike a deal, nearly a week into an attempt to halt 21 months of war in the Palestinian territory. A Palestinian source with knowledge of the indirect talks in Qatar told AFP that Israel's proposals to keep its troops in the war-torn territory were holding up a deal for a 60-day pause. But on the Israeli side, a senior political official, also speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivities of the talks, accused Hamas of inflexibility and deliberately trying to scuttle an accord. Both Hamas and Israel have said that 10 captives held in Gaza would be released -- if an agreement is reached. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed he was prepared then to enter talks for a more permanent end to the war. Enclave plans? But one Palestinian source said Israel's refusal to accept Hamas's demand for a complete withdrawal of troops from Gaza was holding back progress in the talks. A second source said mediators had asked both sides to postpone discussions until US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, arrives in the Qatari capital. The first source said Israel was proposing to maintain its military in more than 40 percent of the Palestinian territory, forcing hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians into a small area near the city of Rafah, on the border with Egypt. "Hamas's delegation will not accept the Israeli maps... as they essentially legitimise the reoccupation of approximately half of the Gaza Strip and turn Gaza into isolated zones with no crossings or freedom of movement," they said. Israeli media reported that new maps would be presented on Sunday, quoting an unnamed foreign official with knowledge of the details. A senior Israeli political official countered later that it was Hamas that rejected what was on the table, accusing the group of "creating obstacles" and "refusing to compromise" with the aim of "sabotaging the negotiations". "Israel has demonstrated a willingness to show flexibility in the negotiations, while Hamas remains intransigent, clinging to positions that prevent the mediators from advancing an agreement," the official added in a statement sent to AFP. Two previous ceasefires -- a week-long truce beginning in late November 2023 and a two-month one from mid-January this year -- saw 105 captives released in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. The second Palestinian source said "some progress" had been made in the latest talks on plans for releasing Palestinian prisoners held by Israel and getting more aid to Gaza. Netanyahu, who is under domestic and international pressure to end the war, said this week that neutralising Hamas as a security threat was a prerequisite for any long-term ceasefire talks. That included disarmament, he said, warning that failure to do so would mean Israel would have to do so by force. At least 57,882 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed since the start of the Israeli war, according to the health ministry in Gaza. Azerbaijan to Begin Natural Gas Exports to Syria

Taarek Refaat Azerbaijan announced Saturday that it will begin exporting natural gas to Syria via Turkey, in a move aimed at easing Syria's deepening energy crisis. The announcement came during Syria's Ahmad Al-Sharaa's official visit to Baku — his first since assuming office in December 2024. During talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, the two sides underscored the urgent need to address Syria's energy shortage and confirmed plans for a pipeline-based gas export project to be launched in the near future. 'It was noted that Syria is currently facing a severe energy crisis,' read an official statement from the Azerbaijani presidency. 'In this context, a project to export Azerbaijani gas to Syria via Turkish territory was confirmed, which will contribute to enhancing the country's energy security.' After more than 14 years of civil war, much of Syria's electricity infrastructure has been decimated. Nationwide blackouts lasting more than 20 hours per day have become routine, complicating reconstruction efforts and daily life. Al-Sharaa's administration, which has pledged to stabilize and rebuild the war-torn nation, has prioritized restoring power to major cities and industrial zones as part of a broader economic recovery plan. In May 2025, Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad Al-Bashir revealed that Damascus and Ankara had reached an agreement under which Turkey would supply natural gas to northern Syria through an existing pipeline infrastructure. The new Azerbaijan-Syria-Turkey deal builds upon that framework and represents the first significant tripartite energy cooperation involving Syria since the end of the civil war. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream

US to Impose 30% Tariffs on Mexico, EU from 1 August

Israa Farhan The United States is set to introduce sweeping new tariffs on imports from Mexico and the European Union starting 1 August 2025, following an announcement from former President Donald Trump. In official correspondence issued on Saturday, Trump notified both Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that a 30% tariff would be applied to all exports from their respective regions to the US. In the letter to President Sheinbaum, Trump confirmed that the new 30% tariff would apply independently of existing sector-specific duties. He also warned that any attempts to bypass the new tariffs through transshipment would result in even higher charges. Additionally, Trump cautioned that if Mexico increases its tariffs, the US would respond by adding the same percentage increase on top of the 30% base rate. A nearly identical letter was sent to Ursula von der Leyen, in which Trump stated that the 30% rate was still insufficient to fully address what he described as an ongoing trade imbalance between the US and the European Union. The EU responded swiftly. European Commission President von der Leyen reiterated the bloc's willingness to work toward a resolution before the 1 August deadline. However, she also made clear that the EU would act decisively to defend its economic interests if necessary. Von der Leyen warned that such tariffs could severely damage critical transatlantic supply chains and negatively impact industries, consumers, and patients on both sides of the Atlantic. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream
