After wearing No. 20 as a freshman at Texas, rookie Tre Johnson will begin his career in the NBA with the Washington Wizards with a new look on the court.
Johnson chose No. 20 to pay tribute to his father, Richard Johnson Jr., who wore it for four years at Baylor University and Midwestern State (Texas). Richard was inducted into the Midwestern State Hall of Honor after finishing with 1,009 points in two seasons.
The sixth pick in the 2025 NBA draft was forced to change numbers as second-year center Alexandre Sarr currently wears No. 20. He went with No. 12 and revealed a hilarious reason why he chose it during his introductory press conference on June 28.
While it appears as though there was little to no meaning behind choosing No. 12, Johnson still found a way to represent his father in the NBA: He asked the Wizards to include "Johnson III" on his jersey since he was named after him.
Johnson was the SEC Freshman of the Year last season, averaging 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 33 games on 39.7% shooting from 3-point range. He was the 10th player in program history to be honored as Freshman of the Year.
The 19-year-old debuted with the Wizards in the NBA Summer League, averaging 19.5 points, three rebounds, 1.5 assists and one steal on 45.5% shooting from 3-point range in two appearances. He finished with 21 points on July 13.
Johnson impressed the Wizards throughout the predraft process with his ability on the court, competitiveness and character. He is eager to get to work with the team, and will do so with a new jersey number.
Note: Throughout August, Rookie Wire is looking at every first-round pick and why each player selected their respective jersey number as they make the jump to the NBA.

Carlos Correa impressing teammates after 1st full week with Astros

Carlos Correa impressing teammates after 1st full week with Astros originally appeared on The Sporting News The Houston Astros have not performed up to par since MLB's July 31 trade deadline. The Astros have gone 3-5 in their last eight contests, and they have seen their lead in the AL West shrink to just one game. But while the Astros as a whole are experiencing some post-trade deadline growing pains, its most notable acquisition — shortstop Carlos Correa, who is now playing at third base for his new team — has been putting up monster numbers. In his eight games since returning to the club that drafted him No. 1 overall in 2012, Correa has gone a combined 13-32 (.406) at the plate with one home run, five RBIs, four runs scored and a 1.049 OPS. That stretch of success includes five multi-hit games, including four in as many contests since Aug. 5. During that short time span, Correa has drawn plenty of praise from his teammates. "Carlos is an unbelievable player and talented person, a leader," starting pitcher Hunter Brown said, via Field Level Media. "I speak for everybody: We were excited to have him. He brings a different mentality every day to the clubhouse, and it's showing up on the field. That's what you expect out of a player like that, and he's doing it." "It seems like he's working hard, really excited to be here and obviously he's been hitting great," second baseman Jose Altuve added. Prior to joining the Minnesota Twins in free agency ahead of the 2022 season, Correa spent the first seven years of his big-league career with the Astros, winning a World Series championship in 2017. Correa's scorching hot play in recent games is a welcoming sign for an organization looking to accomplish the same feat eight years later.
