Israel says antisemitic attack in US fuelled by media

JERUSALEM : Israel's top diplomat condemned today a weekend attack on demonstrators in the US demanding the release of hostages held in Gaza, alleging it was fuelled by the media.
'Shocked by the terrible antisemitic terror attack targeting Jews in Boulder, Colorado,' Gideon Saar wrote on X.
'This is pure Antisemitism, fueled by the blood libels spread in the media,' he added, without elaborating.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he hoped US authorities would prosecute 'the cold blood perpetrator to the fullest extent of the law'.
'The antisemitic attacks around the world are a direct result of blood libels against the Jewish state and people, and this must be stopped,' Netanyahu's office said in a statement.
The loaded term 'blood libel' refers to the antisemitic accusation that Jews used the blood of Christians in religious rituals from the Middle Ages up until the 20th century.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid also denounced yesterday's attack in Colorado.
'We are all horrified by the violent terror attack in Colorado against peaceful protesters who were simply calling for the release of our hostage,' he wrote on X.
Several people suffered burns and other injuries yesterday in what the FBI called a 'targeted terror attack' against the demonstrators seeking the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza.
Of the 251 hostages taken during Hamas's Oct 7, 2023 attack that sparked the ongoing war in Gaza, 57 remain in captivity, including 34 the Israeli military says are dead.
Israel has faced growing condemnation over the humanitarian crisis in the war-ravaged Gaza Strip, where the UN has warned the entire population is at risk of famine.

Gaza ceasefire push set to fail at UN Security Council as Israel's ally US expected to veto and block end to fighting

NEW YORK, June 4 — The UN Security Council will vote Wednesday on a resolution calling for a ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access in Gaza, a measure expected to fail due to a US veto. It is the 15-member body's first vote on the subject since November, when the United States — a key Israeli ally — also blocked a text calling for an end to fighting. The new resolution, seen by AFP, 'demands an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza respected by all parties.' It also calls for the 'immediate, dignified and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups.' Underlining a 'catastrophic humanitarian situation' in the Palestinian territory, the resolution additionally demands the lifting of all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. It will be put to vote at 4pm Wednesday (2000 GMT), but several diplomats indicated to AFP that they expected the United States to wield its veto power. They added that the representatives from the 10 elected members of the Council, who will introduce the text, tried in vain to negotiate with the American side. Israel has faced growing international pressure to end its war in Gaza, which was triggered by the unprecedented October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on Israeli soil. That scrutiny has increased over flailing aid distribution in Gaza, which Israel blocked for more than two months before allowing a limited number of UN vehicles to enter in mid-May. But that, the United Nations said, was not enough to meet the humanitarian needs. A US-backed relief effort called the Gaza Humanitarian Fund has also come under criticism for going against long-standing aid principles by coordinating relief efforts with a military belligerent. Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, on Tuesday urged the Council to act. 'All of us will be judged by history as to how much have we done in order to stop this crime against the Palestinian people,' he said. — AFP

US-backed Gaza aid centres to close Wednesday

JERUSALEM: Aid centres run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a US and Israel-backed agency, will temporarily close Wednesday for renovation, it said. 'June 4, distribution centres will be closed for renovation, reorganisation and efficiency improvement work,' GHF wrote on Facebook. Aid distribution will resume Thursday, it added. The Israeli army confirmed the temporary closure. 'It is prohibited tomorrow (Wednesday) to travel on roads leading to the distribution centres, which are considered combat zones,' Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee posted on social media. An officially private effort with opaque funding, GHF began operations on May 26 after Israel completely cut off supplies into Gaza for over two months, sparking warnings of mass famine. But GHF's first week of operations, in which it said it had distributed more than seven million meals' worth of food, has been marred by criticism. The Israeli military faces allegations of shooting into crowds of civilians rushing to pick up aid packages near GHF sites. Israeli authorities and the GHF -- which uses contracted US security -- denied any such incident took place. The United Nations and major aid groups have refused to cooperate with the foundation over concerns it was designed to cater to Israeli military objectives. For decades, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA had spearheaded aid distribution in Gaza, with dozens of other organisations participating in efforts to assist the population. Israel has accused UNRWA of providing cover for Hamas militants, claiming that some of the agency's employees took part in the group's October 7 attack.
