Texas A&M has reportedly reached out to Bowling Green transfer guard

Texas A&M's basketball program is on the rise under new head coach Bucky McMillan, who is just two players away from completing his first roster ahead of the 2025 season. Right now, 11 transfers, one 2025 signee, and international shooting guard Rubén Domínguez make up the roster, but they need two more signees to reach the 15-player threshold.
On Wednesday, it was revealed that McMillan has reached out to one of the top uncommitted transfers, graduate guard Derrick Butler from Bowling Green, who averaged 13.2 points per game, 3.5 rebounds, and one assist, while shooting an impressive 41.2% from the field and 34.5% from beyond the arc.
Texas A&M's current guard rotation already includes Pop Isaacs, Jacari Lane, Marcus Hill, and Josh Holloway. Still, the roster needs at least one more veteran who can provide a spark off the bench and provide depth for conference play and the postseason.
Butler is more than capable of making his way to College Station at the end of the month, joining the summer conditioning/practice sessions, and competing for minutes ahead of his final collegiate season.
Butler's experience and playmaking skill set align perfectly with McMillan's fast-paced system, which is designed around offensive efficiency. This trait has never been an issue during his time with the Falcons. McMillan has time to add his final two players, and this is certainly a solid start with the 2025 season just around the corner.

'What an unbelievable playmaker': New Texas A&M WR praised ahead of fall camp

Texas A&M's 2025 passing offense is expected to make a significant jump compared to last season, mainly due to the offseason addition of NC State wide receiver KC Concepcion, who is considered one of the fastest and best route runners in the country. On Tuesday, during the Aggies' press conference to open fall camp, which officially begins on Wednesday, head coach Mike Elko and starting quarterback Marcel Reed heaped plenty of praise on the junior receiver, noting that Texas A&M's offense in on track to be much more consistent through the air, as Concepcion provides Reed a true No. 1 option. After junior Noah Thomas transferred to Georgia, landing Concepcion became a mandatory objective, knowing that Marcel Reed would become the full-time starter after Conner Weigman transferred to Houston. So far, so good, as Elko and Reed couldn't hold back their excitement regarding Concepcion's likely impact this season. "What an unbelievable playmaker" Elko stated. "He was a guy that we paid a lot of attention to when we played him, and he has absolutely lived up to it. … He's ready to go on and have a really, really big year for us." During Elko's two-year head coaching stint at Duke, he became well aware of Concepcion, who faced Elko's tough defense twice during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. One of the main reasons the North Carolina native chose Texas A&M was Marcel Reed's dual-threat ability, especially making plays out of structure, which Reed recounted during their first practice session together. "I remember that practice. I saw KC there and was like, 'Yeah, I got to get this guy.' There was one period where I threw three or four balls that were at least 25 or 30 yards downfield." "KC has done a tremendous job this spring, this summer. He's a tremendously hard worker. … He'll give 110 percent every time. He has really strong hands." This not only provides more context of what Concepcion brings to the offense, but confirms that the future NFL draft selection is already putting the work in to help take Texas A&M's passing game to the next level this fall. Oklahoma Sooners linebacker makes Nagurski Award watch list

It's officially watch list season in college football as the 2025 season kicks off in late-August with Week Zero, and then Week One action takes place on Thursday through Monday of Labor Day weekend. The Oklahoma Sooners had another player make a preseason watch list for a postseason award on Tuesday. Linebacker Kip Lewis was one of 60 players named to the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which is given annually to the best defensive player in college football. The only Oklahoma Sooners to win the award were Roy Williams in 2001 and Derrick Strait in 2003. Both did so under Brent Venables when he was the defensive coordinator at OU. Strait represents the last defensive back to win an award that's been dominated by linebackers and defensive linemen over the last 23 years. Lewis provided two of OU's best moments during the 2024 season. His pick six against Auburn gave Oklahoma a lead they wouldn't relinquish late in the fourth quarter, while his pick six against Alabama ultimately put the Crimson Tide into an unrecoverable tailspin that night in Norman. Lewis returns in 2025 as one of the veteran leaders of head coach Brent Venables' defense. He's started at linebacker since midway through the 2023 season alongside Danny Stutsman. Now with Stutsman off to the NFL, the Sooners are hoping Lewis can help fill his big shoes at Oklahoma. He's entering his fourth year at Oklahoma, as a member of the 2022 recruiting class, Venables' first at OU. Lewis figures to have a big say in how good the Sooners could be on defense this year. Venables and his staff will be counting on the veteran to provide more big moments this fall. Smith highlights a true freshman player that stood out on MSU football's first day of practice

There is a true freshman on the Spartans that reportedly got head coach Jonathan Smith's attention on opening day of preseason fall camp. Michigan State kicked off fall preseason camp on Tuesday, with the Spartans holding their first practice of the season. As part of the opening day of fall camp, Smith met with the media to field a number of questions on his Spartans. One of the questions was related to players standing out on the first day of practice, where he gave a somewhat surprising answer. According to Ben Schadel of Spartan Shadows, Smith noted that true freshman defensive lineman Derrick Simmons was one of the players that stood out on Tuesday. Simmons is entering his first season with the Spartans after playing his high school ball at Frankenmuth High last year. He was a four-star prospect in the 2025 class, and ranked as the No. 27 defensive lineman in the class. So with that being said, he was expected to be a big-time player for the Spartans but I personally didn't expect him to have an impact right away -- which appears could be the case. We will need to continue to monitor Simmons throughout fall camp and see if he is getting similar praise from other coaches and players. If he could step into the rotation as a true freshman, that would go a long way for the Spartans and his future with the program. Michigan State opens the regular season on August 29 against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, with the game set to be televised on FS1.
