'Sholay' Turns 50: Javed Akhtar says Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra starrer was supposed to be a FLOP; reveals last time he watched the film
Javed Akhtar
, says he hasn't seen the film in years, possibly decades, and he has a good reason for it.
Sholay turns 50
On August 15, 'Sholay' will complete 50 years since its release. The film remains the biggest box office hit in Indian cinema history, based on footfalls and inflation-adjusted earnings.
Javed, who co-wrote the script with Salim Khan during their Salim-Javed days, told Hindustan Times, "You should be happy with the work you have done if it is appreciated. But that umbilical cord needs to be cut. You cannot take the full credit for it.
And you shouldn't, too. Now, you should think of what you need to do now, because you are always as relevant as your latest work. You can stay in your dreams, but it won't help.
Those who are lost in their history have no hope for their future."
He further revealed how many times he has seen 'Sholay'. Opening up to the portal, he admitted, "When it was released, I watched it 5-6 times because the initial reports were bad." He went on to add "The film was supposed to be a flop initially, so I watched to see how it had turned out."

A star-studded classic
'Sholay' boasted a powerhouse cast, led by
Sanjeev Kumar
and featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra,
Amjad Khan
, Jaya Bachchan, and Hema Malini. Released in 1975, it became the highest-grossing Indian film of all time, breaking 'Mughal-e-Azam's record. It held that title for over a decade until 'Disco Dancer' surpassed it, but 'Sholay' still holds the record for the most tickets ever sold for an Indian film.
About film's re-release
Over the years, it has become a pop culture phenomenon in India, with its characters becoming household names and its lines becoming memes and quotable quotes. The
Ramesh Sippy
film has been re-released several times, with the last re-release in 2005, to mark the film's 30th anniversary.
A 4k restored version of Sholay will screen at the 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival in September this year. The film has been restored in 4K by Film Heritage Foundation in association with Sippy Films Pvt. Ltd.
What? Dharmendra paid Rs 2000 to a spot boy on the sets of 'Sholay' to make errors so that he can hug Hema Malini

'Torture' of Bengalis set to become Durga Puja theme across Kolkata
KOLKATA: "Atrocities" against Bengalis in several states is set to be one of the major Durga Puja themes across Kolkata this year. Highlighting how alleged persecution of Bengali-speaking Indians and attempts to brand them "Bangladeshis" undermine the community's contributions to Indian society, several puja committees have decided to go big on themes underlining the heritage of Bengal, plight of migrant workers, and cultural and historical contributions of prominent Bengalis. From big players to new entrants, puja committees will focus on the "harassment" of migrant workers for speaking Bengali. While Behala's Adarshapally Club has set its theme on the plight of Bengali refugees during Partition, Baguiati Ashwininagar Bandhumahal will trace Bengal's history back to human existence in the delta 42,000 years ago. In its 81st year, Chaltabagan Sarbojonin's theme is 'Ami Banglay Bolchhi (I am speaking in Bangla)'. The pandal, interestingly, stands adjacent to the house of poet, playwright and lyricist Dwijendralal Roy. "Our pandal will focus on the oppression of Bengalis," said organiser Mousam Banerjee. "Our puja theme will focus on how Bengali speakers are being illegally deported to Bangladesh and their basic rights being snatched, judging them on the basis of the language they speak," said Sanjay Das, chief organiser of the puja at Dum Dum Road Hanuman Mandir Jayashree Club. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Become Fluent in Any Language Talkpal AI Install Now Undo Bandhumahal is marking its 45th year with the theme 'Bangla o Bangali. Banglar Itihaas (Bengal and Bengalis. History of Bengal)'. The pandal will have installations of Rabindranath Tagore, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Raja Ram Mohan Roy. "Durga Puja is no longer limited to idol-viewing, offering prayers or grabbing a quick bite. Our festival is now honoured and admired on the world stage. That's why Puja theme ideas today are like complete thesis papers," said club secretary Swarup Nag. At Adarshapally, the focus is on filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak's works, particularly his film 'Meghe Dhaka Tara (The Cloud-Capped Star)'. Organisers say the theme draws parallels between the turmoil of Bengal during Ghatak's era and contemporary threats to Bengal's cultural fabric. "It's about Bengal in peril - then and now," said organiser Shankar Ghosh. 39 Pally Durgotsav Samiti's puja, primarily being organised by youths struggling with Down syndrome under the supervision of artist Snehasis Das, will focus on the theme of 'language terrorism'. "In society's eyes, we are either outcasts or objects of pity. We wish to be tempered and hardened by the fiery struggles of life," an organiser said.

Deepika Padukone steps back from acting role in ‘The Intern' remake to focus on producing: Report
Bollywood star Deepika Padukone has decided to step away from acting in the Indian remake of 'The Intern', choosing instead to focus solely on her role as a producer. According to a report by Mid-Day, a source close to the project shared that Padukone will no longer play the female lead in the film. 'This time, Deepika will step away from acting in the film to serve solely as a producer, overseeing the creative and logistical reboot. A new leading lady is being cast to play the part she was once slated to perform,' the source said. Padukone, who has previously co-produced films under her banner KA Productions, is reportedly using this opportunity to widen her creative role in filmmaking. ''The Intern' is the first of five projects she plans to mount in the coming year. She is looking to tell stories that are globally relevant,' the source added. The Intern, a remake of the 2015 Hollywood film starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, was first announced in 2020. Deepika was to play the role made famous by Hathaway, while the late Rishi Kapoor had been cast in De Niro's role. Following Kapoor's passing, Amitabh Bachchan joined the project as the senior intern. Despite the strong buzz, the film has seen several delays. The Covid-19 pandemic, Padukone's maternity break, and scheduling issues have pushed the project back multiple times.
