John Oliver Sounds Alarm On Air Traffic Control With 'Truly Honest Recruitment Video'

Yahoo2 days ago

'Last Week Tonight' host John Oliver took a turbulent deep dive on Sunday into the mounting issues plaguing America's air traffic control system.
It was anything but a smooth ride.
Air traffic controllers, whom Oliver praised as the 'unsung heroes of the skies,' are responsible for the safety of around 2 million passengers each day, he noted.
But behind the scenes, he warned, the system is 'under extreme strain.'
Oliver highlighted a long list of problems threatening the safety of the industry - from severe staffing shortages to crumbling facilities and aging technology to outdated equipment.
He ended the segment with what he called a 'truly honest recruitment video.'

5 standout Patriots players from third open OTAs practice

5 standout Patriots players from third open OTAs practice The New England Patriots kick-started their last week of OTAs with their final open practice for the media on Monday. Four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs made his first appearance at an open practice for the Patriots, but he was a limited participant due to his continued rehab from the ACL injury he suffered last season. With Kendrick Bourne out and Ja'Lynn Polk limited, that opened the door for other receivers to step into more prominent roles on offense. Speaking of the offense, this was the best practice by the unit through all three of the open OTA sessions. It was a good way to wrap up for an offense that ranked among the worst in the league last season. They have dealt with numerous changes in the offseason, and things appear to be trending in the right direction. Here are five standout players from the Patriots' third OTAs practice: WR Efton Chism III Undrafted rookie Efton Chism III is quickly becoming one of the most surprising storylines of the Patriots' offseason. The run of strong performances continued on Monday for the former Eastern Washington standout, who hauled in a perfect 7-of-7 passes thrown in his direction. He was getting the top reps with Drake Maye on the field, along with Demario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte and Kyle Williams. QB Drake Maye This was a major bounce-back practice for Drake Maye and the Patriots' offense. The second-year quarterback looked sharp in competitive 11-on-11s, going 14-of-16 passing during the practice. It was a good sign to see the offense finally settle into things and get some wins against the defense. Maye's confidence continues to grow every time he steps onto the field, and that should only continue as he becomes more comfortable with Josh McDaniels' offense. S Josh Minkins Undrafted rookie safety Josh Minkins gets a mention here for his interception on fellow rookie Ben Wooldridge. It was the only interception of the competitive period. Minkins will need more plays like that in training camp, given the ridiculous competition at safety this year. Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers sit at the top of the depth chart with Marte Mapu, Jaylinn Hawkins, Dell Pettus and rookie Craig Woodson currently serving as the reserve options. RB Rhamondre Stevenson Don't forget about Rhamondre Stevenson. It's crazy that it even needs to be said about the guy at the top of the running back depth chart. Stevenson probably had the best play of the practice after hauling in a dime of a throw from Drake Maye on a deep wheel route down the sideline. Even with the arrival of explosive rookie TreVeyon Henderson, Stevenson will still have a major role on the Patriots' offense. WR Demario Douglas Demario Douglas was the Patriots' leading wide receiver for the 2024 season. Even with the new receiver additions, Douglas continues to prove how valuable he is to the offense. He snagged all four of the balls thrown in his direction at Monday's practice. It will be fun to see what Douglas is capable of in an offense where he isn't perceived as the top receiving threat. The arrival of Stefon Diggs and Kyle Williams could open up even more opportunities for him to make plays in the slot. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

John Oliver Slams the 'Genius' Who Keeps Changing HBO Max's Name, Admonishes Parent Company Exec for Anticipating His 'Hot Take'

John Oliver didn't disappoint his corporate overlords Sunday night by addressing the recent HBO Max name reversal — the latest in a series of changes for the streaming service. During his main segment on Last Week Tonight, which was about President Donald Trump's often antagonistic relationship with the press, Oliver referred to the current administration's decision to ban the Associated Press from the Oval Office for refusing to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America,' a move Trump made soon after taking office. Discovery CFO Explains Reasoning Behind Max Rebrand, Potential Company Split Justifying the AP's decision, Oliver noted: 'It has clients all over the world, and lots of them still use the term the Gulf of Mexico, so it's not as simple as you're making out there, especially because it can take time for people to adjust to a stupid name change.' He then turned to the recent decision by Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns HBO and HBO Max, where Last Week Tonight airs. Showing the various logos/names onscreen, Oliver noted: 'Sometimes, hypothetically, before we can even get used to one dumb name [HBO Go], some genius comes along and only makes it dumber [HBO Now], then somehow it gets dumber still [HBO Max], and then against all the odds, somehow it becomes even worse [Max], before inexplicably going back to the stupid thing it was before [HBO Max].' Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Discovery streaming marketing chief Shauna Spenley last week said she was anxiously awaiting Oliver's take on the streamer's name change. Oliver notoriously isn't afraid to go after whatever corporation owns his home network (from Time Warner to AT&T to Warner Bros. Discovery) on his show. 'We just cannot wait for his hot take on this whole rebrand,' Spenley told advertisers during the company's upfront presentation to advertisers last week. 'We think it's going to be pretty hot.' Oliver noted her comments, saying: 'Incidentally, only this week, my parent company apparently said they cannot wait for my hot take on this whole rebrand — believing that whatever I say about this change was going to be pretty hot, so please look me in the eyes when I say this: Fuck you, don't tell me what to do. I'm not gonna do it if you want it unless, wait, hold on, maybe you thought baiting me like that would be a good way to stop me from doing it, but on the other hand, how can a company be that smart when they're the same people that came up with so many stupid fucking names?' The show also featured a brief graphic at the end of the opening credits with the various logos the streamer has used with the caption 'Mutatis Mutandis.' Also during Sunday's show, his 'And Now This' segment featured a humorous montage of various local news outlets' 'pretty hot takes on HBO's latest rebranding.' Stefon Diggs shows up at voluntary Patriots practice after viral boat video sparks controversy

Stefon Diggs, who landed a three-year contract with the New England Patriots earlier this offseason, arrived for an offseason workout with his new team this week. While veteran players reporting for a voluntary practice is not unusual, Diggs' appearance drew considerable attention because videos recently surfaced on social media showing him passing what appeared to be a bag of pink crystals to women on a boat. Diggs, 31, has attended multiple events this offseason with hip-hop star Cardi B, including the Met Gala and a Boston Celtics-New York Knicks playoff game. On Sunday, the Grammy Award winner posted photos and videos to her Instagram featuring the four-time Pro Bowler, one of which was also taken on a boat. The post has gotten more than 4.4 million likes. Cardi B's Instagram account boasts roughly 163 million followers. The Patriots have two remaining optional workouts Tuesday and Thursday as part of the spring organized team activity window allotted to each NFL team. Reporters will not have access to those sessions. The players have a mandatory three-day minicamp beginning June 9. Diggs recorded at least 1,000 receiving yards in six consecutive seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills. Diggs appeared in eight games during his lone season with the Houston Texans. and finished the 2204 campaign with 496 yards. He tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in October.
