'We did it!' India's star for the day, Sangita Basfore, could be heard crying to her teammates after the final whistle was blown in the 'knockout' Women's Asian Cup Qualifier fixture at the 700th Anniversary of Chiang Mai Stadium on Saturday.
And the tears of joy in the Indian women's eyes reflected the tall task they achieved in beating world No. 46 Thailand 2-1 in their last match of the qualifiers in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and booking a ticket to the Women's Asian Cup 2026 in Australia.

The two-time World Cuppers — boosted by a huge crowd cheering on the home side — showed their class with their trademark constant press. But the Indian defence stood strong and Basfore pounced on two of the few golden chances created by the visitors — one on either side of the break — to earn a memorable victory, India's first against the opponents who lie 24 rungs above them on the Fifa ladder.
'We played as a team and that's why I could score the two goals and qualify for the Asian Cup,' Basfore said at the postmatch presentation.

The gritty defence led by Shilky Devi Hemam, Sweety Devi, Nirmala Devi and Sanju kept the hosts at bay while Panthoi Chanu under the bar made at least two brilliant saves to keep India in the game. But it was the Indians' day on the field as after receiving a pass from Anju Tamang outside the Thailand box, Basfore sent in a brilliant volley that left 'keeper Tiffany Sornpao flying but unable to reach the ball.
Thailand came back strongly after the break as Chatchawan Rodthong equalised in the 47th minute. However, the Indian attack led by Manisha, Pyari Xaxa and Ratanbala Devi kept raiding the rival box and Basfore rose to the occasion in the 74th minute and nodded in a headed cut-back by Shilky Devi from a corner kick.

Coaches see room for improvement after a creditable show in World Boxing Cup

With the selection for the World championships approaching fast, the Indian boxers' performance in the second World Boxing Cup in Astana, Kazakhstan, has helped the coaches assess the situation well. Following the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decision to recognise a new international federation (World Boxing) in February and retain boxing in the 2028 Olympics, the newly-formed body has scheduled its first World championships in Liverpool from September 4 to 14. Building up for the elite competition, notwithstanding the fact that Boxing Federation of India is run by an interim committee due to issues over its pending elections, the country's boxers gave their best in Astana and would hope to gain crucial ranking points. While two-time World youth champion Sakshi Choudhary (54kg), Olympian Jaismine Lamboria (57kg) and multiple National champion Nupur Sheoran (80+kg) secured gold, Meenakshi (48kg) and Olympian Pooja Rani (80kg), who returned to action in the National championships, took silver and Sanju (60kg) claimed a bronze. Among men, Abinash Jamwal (65kg), Hitesh Gulia (70kg) and Jugnoo (85kg) won silver, while Nikhil Dubey (75kg) and Narender Berwal (90+kg) got bronze. While praising the boxers' performance in quality fields, featuring Olympians and professional boxers from top nations, women's head coach D. Chandralal said, 'We focused on discipline, endurance and strength. Initially, the girls found it difficult but got adjusted to it. We are on the right track, but we have a long way to go. 'Nikhat Zareen, Preeti Pawar have joined the camp, Lovlina (Borgohain) will join. Parveen Hooda will complete her doping ban and will join.' Men's head coach Dharmendra Yadav expressed satisfaction over some boxers' showing. 'We tried to instil a positive attitude and self-belief in our boxers and focused on endurance. We need to work on a few areas,' said Yadav. Yadav informed that Worlds medallists Amit Panghal and Deepak Bhoria might not make it to the selection evaluation for the Worlds because of their recent performances. Of two other Worlds medallists, Mohammed Hussamuddin is on the path of recovery while Nishant Dev, who turned professional in the USA, may return to the National fold later.

It is privilege to be part of something so new and ambitious, says Nathan Hales on registering for SLI

New Delhi [India], July 7 (ANI): Fresh off his historic Olympic gold at the Paris 2024 Games, where he set a new record in Men's Trap, British star athlete Nathan Hales has officially registered for the inaugural edition of the Shooting League of India (SLI). The reigning Olympic Champion is among the first global names to throw his hat in the ring for what promises to be a revolutionary tournament in the world of shooting sports. 'It is a privilege to be part of something so new and ambitious. Being invited to take part in a league that could shape the future of shooting is truly exciting. It is not only a chance to compete, but to help set the tone for how this league evolves globally,' said Hales, as quoted by the SLI press release. The highly anticipated SLI 2025 will take place between November 20 and December 2, 2025, and will feature 6-8 teams divided into two pools. The tournament will include mixed team events across pistol (10m, 25m), rifle (10m, 50m 3p), and shotgun (Trap & Skeet) categories. Shooters will be grouped into four tiers -- Elite Champions, World Elite, National Champions, and Junior & Youth Champions -- ensuring a dynamic blend of experience and emerging talent. Interestingly, Nathan Hales claimed victory in the Men's Trap event at the Lonato leg of the 2023 ISSF World Cup, setting a new world record with a near-perfect score of 49 out of 50. The win secured his place in the 2023 ISSF World Cup Final in Doha, where he went on to earn a bronze medal. The following year, he clinched gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics, scoring 48 out of 50 to establish a new Olympic record in the Men's Trap event. On his decision to register for SLI, Hales shared, 'It is refreshing to see shooting being reimagined. League formats like this bring the sport closer to fans and make it more spectator-friendly. It is not just about shooting anymore -- it is about energy, visibility, and pushing our boundaries as athletes.' Although this marks his first experience in a league-style format, Hales is confident in his ability to adapt. 'I will approach it like I would any major event -- stay calm, train hard, and remain focused. The short, high-pressure matches will demand consistency, and I think that is brilliant for both mental preparation and crowd engagement.' The British shooter, who will be visiting India for the first time, is equally eager about the camaraderie and cultural exchange the league will foster. 'I am really looking forward to meeting shooters from around the world, especially the younger Indian athletes. There is a lot to learn and share. Off the range, too, I cannot wait to explore India, reconnect with fellow Indian shooters and just enjoy the entire experience.' A firm believer in mentorship, Hales emphasised the opportunity the SLI presents for upcoming talent and said, 'It is vital that the next generation gets exposure to top-level competition early. Leagues like this can inspire young shooters and give them role models up close -- that is priceless for the growth of the sport.' When asked about his personal goals for the league, Hales affirmed, 'I want to give everything to my team. Whether it is a performance edge, motivation, or tactical insight -- I will do whatever it takes to help us succeed. And, of course, I want to enjoy every bit of it.' His message for young Indian fans and aspiring shooters is one of encouragement: 'Support your shooters, soak it all in, and if you are lucky enough to be in the stands -- watch closely. There is so much to learn just by observing how top athletes approach each shot.' (ANI)

Not Jasprit Bumrah's, Sachin Tendulkar Terms This Star's Delivery To Joe Root As 'Ball Of The Series'

The legendary Sachin Tendulkar hailed Akash Deep as the "standout bowler" of the match and described his delivery to dismiss Joe Root in the second innings as the "ball of the series," following India's emphatic 336-run series-levelling win in the second Test at Edgbaston. Akash Deep returned figures of 6 for 99 in the second innings to complete a match haul of 10 for 187, while Mohammed Siraj claimed seven wickets across both innings to help power India to victory. Tendulkar was full of praise on 'X'. "India's approach was to take England out of this game and force them to play differently, making sure that there would only be 1 winner. What impressed me most about the bowlers was the length they bowled. "Needless to say, Akash Deep was the standout bowler, and in my opinion, he bowled the ball of the series to Joe Root," Tendulkar wrote. A lime innings from the of the moment! Congratulations, @ShubmanGill, on powering India to a brilliant Test victory! 🇮🇳 @RishabhPant17, @klrahul, and @imjadeja batted very well, especially in the 2nd innings. India's approach was to take England out of this… — Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) July 6, 2025 On a funny note, he also didn't forget to mention Siraj's diving catch at short mid-wicket. "Enjoyed the catch taken by Mohammad 'Jonty' Siraj," the owner of 51 Test hundreds commented. Tendulkar also praised the batting effort which set up an easy win. The recently retired Virat Kohli wrote: "Great victory for India at Edgbaston. Fearless and kept pushing England to the wall. Brilliantly led by Shubman with the bat and in the field and impactful performances from everyone. Special mention to Siraj and Akash for the way they bowled on this pitch." Another former India skipper Sourav Ganguly was all praise for Shubman Gill and his team. "What a performance from shubman gill and his team.. with the bat and now with the (sic) and Siraj just brilliant .indian attack looking far superior than the English attack .. Akasdeep (sic) and Siraj are workhorses. india win without be better result with the fantastic Gill in charge. What a fantastic batting effort," Ganguly wrote on X. NCA director VVS Laxman said: "Well done, Team India on an exceptional victory! It was amazing to see the team's fighting spirit and resilience.
