AUSTIN (KXAN) — A former elementary music teacher at Eanes Independent School District who was arrested in February on charges of Possession of Child Pornography is now being charged with Sexual Performance by Child under 14, according to court records.

Zachary Barnett was arrested and booked into the Williamson County Jail on Feb. 26 on three warrants issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Criminal Investigations Division.
DPS didn't provide any further details at the time due to there being an active and ongoing investigation, a spokesperson for DPS told KXAN in a statement.
Online records didn't show an attorney listed as representation for Barnett.
Eanes ISD told KXAN Barnett had a fingerprinted background check. The district said Barnett wasn't determined to have a prior history and 'there were no indications of concern' prior to this incident.
According to the new arrest affidavit filed in Travis County on April 28, DPS executed a search warrant at Barnett's residence and seized a total of 13 digital devices.
DPS' analysis of the content on these devices revealed over 1,500 files of known Child Sexual Abuse and/or Exploitation Material (CSEM). Among those files were 'a total of 8,885 pictures/videos of female students from Barnett's class,' the affidavit states.
'The majority of Barnett's self-produced videos were zoomed into the female students' skirts, their underwear, and/or their crotch area,' the affidavit said.
According to the affidavit, Barnett would play a 'Freeze and Hold the Pose' game, featuring popular cartoon characters, where his students would replicate the pose of a character shown on a screen in the classroom.
Barnett would then take videos of students in those poses 'in a sexually explicit manner,' the affidavit said.
According to Travis County jail records, Barnett has not been arrested on the new charge.
'We are saddened for any innocent children who may have been unknowingly objectified by an adult entrusted with their care and instruction,' Eanes ISD previously wrote in a release. 'We understand this situation is disturbing. The Eanes ISD Police Department is helping to confirm which students' images were found in the search. Those families whose children may be affected will be contacted directly by school district or DPS officials.'

58-year-old Plano man sentenced to 50 years in prison for continuous sexual abuse of a young girl, authorities say

A 58-year-old Plano man will spend the rest of his life in prison after being convicted for the continuous sexual abuse of a child, the Collin County District Attorney's Office announced Tuesday. Victor Cornejo was sentenced to 50 years in prison without the possibility of parole for sexually abusing a girl for at least a year, authorities said. According to the DA's office, Cornejo knew the 13-year-old victim, and the abuse came to light in 2023 after the victim told a therapist about Cornejo's actions. After the victim came forward, an investigation was launched by the Plano Police Department. During a forensic interview at the Children's Advocacy Center of Collin County, the victim gave a detailed account of the abuse she suffered by Cornejo, revealing it happened several times between 2022 and 2023. A Collin County judge found Cornejo guilty of continuous sexual abuse of a child and sentenced him to 50 years in prison. Under Texas law, the conviction for Cornejo's charges carries a mandatory sentence without eligibility for parole. "This sentence ensures that this predator will spend the rest of his life behind bars —exactly where he belongs," Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said in a statement. "He robbed a child of safety and trust, and justice demands that he never have the chance to harm another."

Target shooting is city's third mass-violence incident this year

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Monday's shooting outside an Austin Target store that left three people dead marked the city's third mass violence incident of the year. Since January, there have been 269 mass shootings in the U.S., according to the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit that tracks gun-related violence. The organization defines mass shootings as 'four or more' people that are shot or killed in a single incident, not including the shooter. The Federal Bureau of Investigation does not define mass shootings but defines an 'active shooter' as one or more individuals attempting to kill people in a populated area. Mass killings are defined by law as 'three or more people,' according to the FBI. Three killed in Target shooting, suspect detained A KXAN review of the Gun Violence Archive's database found, so far this year, 22 incidents in Texas that it defined as mass shootings, including two in Austin. EXPLORE: KXAN's 'Stop Mass Shootings' project On June 28, four people were shot at 900 E. Braker Lane around 2:25 a.m. The victims sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, according to the Austin Police Department. On March 30, four people were shot inside Lit Lounge at 215 E. 6th Street, according to APD. A suspect was later arrested and charged with aggravated assault mass shooting. 'This is a very sad day for Austin,' said Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis shortly after Monday's shooting. 'It's a very sad day for us all.' Target said it is 'devastated by the violence that occurred' at its store and its 'hearts are with the families and loves ones of those who lost their lives, our team in Austin and all those impacted by this tragedy.' In the wake of the deadly shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde in 2022 that killed 21 people, KXAN Investigates launched 'Stop Mass Shootings', a project to provide context and explore solutions surrounding gun violence. His crimes were exposed when horrified mum checked her son's Xbox

A horrified mum discovered that a man had been paying her son to perform a series of sexual acts after checking the boy's Xbox. Ian Ratcliffe plied the teenager with hundreds of pounds in cash in order to submit to his depraved wishes. The armed forces veteran then claimed he was not aware that he was committing any crime. While the dad has been spared an immediate prison sentence, a judge warned him yesterday: "If I see you again, you should expect to go to prison." Liverpool Crown Court heard on Monday afternoon that the 17-year-old victim had been "looking for work doing odd jobs and gardening" and was told by a friend that Ratcliffe may require his services. Having contacted the 56-year-old, of Poynter Street in St Helens, on Facebook, the two subsequently arranged to meet up READ MORE: Live updates as huge fire breaks out on docks READ MORE: Upgraded Merseyside train station to open next week after years of delays Cheryl Mottram, prosecuting, described how the boy thereafter began to carry out work in Ratcliffe's garden. But he then started messaging the teen to "ask if he was horny" and suggested that the two perform a sex act together in what he termed "races". Ratcliffe went on to pay the complainant £50 to take part in such activity on a number of occasions. The boy also agreed to be paid £140 in order to allow the defendant to perform oral sex on him as he wanted the money to attend a music festival. However, the teenager's mother grew concerned over his behaviour and discovered Ratcliffe's abuse after checking her son's Xbox and finding a series of messages between the two. The youngster was said to have become "distraught" and burst into tears at this stage, being taken to hospital in a "complete state" as a result. Ratcliffe, who has no previous convictions, went on to state in a basis of plea, which was accepted by the prosecution, that he "wasn't aware that it was a sexual offence to pay for the sexual services" of a person aged 17. He also maintained that their activity had been consensual, having occurred over a period of nine weeks. Louise McCloskey, defending, told the court: "This is clearly a serious case, one in which the defendant has been open and honest about the difficulties that he has faced. That is to his credit. "The Probation Service feel he is somebody that they would be able to work with in order to support him to reduce what is already classed as a low risk of reoffending in the future. While a period of imprisonment would mark the seriousness of the offence, it would have a significant detrimental impact on his already fragile mental health and would be an obstacle to the intervention and progress that the defendant has made so far. "The defendant clearly has already taken steps to address some of his difficulties. He is a man of hitherto positive good character, given his background. He has strong personal mitigation, in terms of the impact that his time in the forces has had. A custodial sentence would involve that loss of his home. It would impact negatively on his mental health and have a significant impact on his father and his son." Ratcliffe admitted one count of paying for the sexual services of a child. Appearing in the dock wearing a grey t-shirt and red Adidas shorts, he was handed an eight-month imprisonment suspended for a year. Sentencing, Judge Stuart Driver KC said: "There is a lot of mitigation here. You are of previous good character. Indeed, you have a positive record of military service. "I accept that an unusual feature of the case is that you were not aware that you were committing an offence, because the activities that you conducted with a 17-year-od were not themselves unlawful. It is the paying for them that is an offence. "You have poor mental health and you have sought treatment, which is underway. If I see you again, you should expect to go to prison." Ratcliffe will be required to complete a rehabilitation activity requirement of up to 10 days and a six-month alcohol treatment requirement. He was also handed a 10-year restraining order.
