Man charged with murder of Matthew Pascoe after body found in Gold Coast hotel room

A man has been charged with murder after the discovery of a body in a Gold Coast hotel room on the weekend.
Paramedics were called to the Hinterland Hotel in Nerang, where the body of 35-year-old Matthew Pascoe was found, at about 11am on Saturday.
Police said hotel staff found the Nerang local lying on his back next to a bed in room seven.
An autopsy on Tuesday determined he died from what police said were significant head and internal injuries, prompting detectives to launch a homicide investigation.
A 34-year-old Nerang man was charged with one count of murder overnight.
He is due to appear at Southport Magistrates Court this morning.
Detective Inspector Mark Mooney said on Wednesday that Mr Pascoe had checked into the hotel at 2pm on Friday with his mother, but that she left and did not return.
He said Mr Pascoe was subject to a court order prohibiting him from drinking alcohol at home, which was why he was staying at the hotel.
Mr Pascoe was last seen alive visiting the reception area at about 6:20pm, CCTV footage indicated.
Inspector Mooney said there were no obvious signs of a struggle in Mr Pascoe's room or any evidence of an obvious confrontation with anyone in the hotel.
Caitlyn Pascoe, Mr Pascoe's sister, said his death "left a hole in our hearts that truly can never be fixed".
"He always had my back and no matter what he was always there ready to protect his family," she said.

Brawling Aussie blokes halt traffic on busy road

A fiery bust-up between two drivers has brought a busy Gold Coast intersection to a screeching halt — and it's all been caught on camera by horrified onlookers. Footage posted to social media on Saturday shows the moment a roadside showdown exploded on Currumburra Road in Ashmore, when tensions boiled over between the driver of a white Holden Commodore and a man behind the wheel of a silver Volkswagen ute. In the now-viral video, the Commodore driver can be heard screaming 'Come on!' as he lunges into the open window of the VW, landing a punch. Not satisfied, he delivers another blow while egging the other man to step out of the vehicle — all as stunned drivers watch on during a green light. Instead of getting out, the Volkswagen driver takes matters into his own hands by performing an illegal U-turn, mounting a median strip and pulling up aggressively in front of the Commodore's bonnet. The Holden driver can then be seen jumping back into his car and swerving around the 4X4, before speeding off with the VW in hot pursuit. The showdown has clocked up over two million views on Facebook, sparking widespread debate about road rage and driver behaviour. 'They're acting like toddlers throwing tantrums,' remarked one viewer. 'Wow, people are getting crazy on the roads now,' said another. A spokesperson for Queensland Police Service told Courier Mail that police were aware of the video, but no formal complaint had been made.

Body found in reserve in Sydney's west potentially a middle-aged woman, police say

A crime scene has been set up at a reserve in Western Sydney and an investigation is underway after a body was found on Sunday. Police officers went to Irwin Street in Werrington at about 1:15pm after a passer-by spotted the body in a remote part of the reserve, with sporting fields on one side and houses on the other, and called triple-0. Detective Superintendent Trent King said he had been informed the body was "potentially a middle-aged woman", and had been there "for a period of time." "Now, at this stage, I don't believe it was wrapped," he said. "There were some items around the body, but not wrapped — so, other clothing items and other rubbish." However, he was quick to point out the investigation was in its infancy and it was too early to tell if there were any injuries or signs of rape. Forensic officers are canvassing the scene as part of Strike Force Dowerin, which includes Nepean detectives and the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad. The Missing Persons Unit is also assisting the investigation. In response to questions about the involvement of homicide detectives, Superintendent King said it was necessary until the cause of death was established. "We're hoping, certainly in the next couple of days, through both the post-mortem examination as well as the examination today, that we will have further information," he said. Vision from the scene shows a police tent over a blue tarpaulin covering the ground not far from where the body was found. Superintendent King said it was "certainly part of the crime scene." "We're not discounting anything at this stage in relation to that aspect of it. "I don't have any information of what's underneath." Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
