Footy legend Buddy Franklin reveals he's found a new passion for INSECTS
Lance Franklin has opened up on a newfound hobby he and his wife Jesinta have happened upon. It appears the pair, who live on the Gold Coast, are planning to keep a colony of bees. The Hawthorn great made the revelation on his podcast, the Buddy & Shane Show, with his co-host, Shane Crawford explaining how he'd spent his weekend watching several games of local and senior football. He also revealed he went to watch his son play this weekend for the Blues and had sent a text to Franklin asking him if he would like to join him to 'pop his head in' and watch the match, stating that it wasn't far away from his home. However, the former Sydney and Hawthorn great explained that he had a 'busy weekend' with Crawford then delving into why he was so busy. 'You said you had a few things locked in,' Crawford began to probe. It comes as Jesinta and Lance have opened up on their plans to start a farm at home 'One of them, which I saw on your beautiful wife's socials yesterday, and I thought you were mucking around when you sent me the message, so what was the message you sent me?' 'I did a beekeeping course, which was incredible... that was my weekend!' Franklin replied. His wife, Jesinta took to Instagram on Sunday to post several pictures of what appeared to be the couple harvesting trays of honey from several bee hives at the Gold Coast Amateur Beekeepers Society in Nerang. Clad in beekeeping suits, they collected honey trays, while Lance was also seen scraping the golden nectar from one tray into a bucket of honey. She captioned the Instagram: 'New level unlocked' adding several bee emojis. 'My Dream weekend.' 'It was incredible. Me and Jesinta did it. We spent a half-day Saturday and then a half-day Sunday...' 'Buddy the Beekeeper,' Crawford interrupted. The couple had admitted that they were looking to sell their $11million mansion last year 'Buddy the Beekeeper,' Franklin responded. 'But no it was incredible. Bees are just an amazing thing really, what they do. To get the opportunity to do that course, was incredible.' Franklin then opened up on his ambitions to grow his own honey and have his own beehives. 'We will,' he explained. The Hawthorn legend and his wife Jesinta have been looking to sell their $11million mansion in Queensland in recent years. It comes last year after the 2010 Miss Universe Australia winner, Jesinta, had revealed that they were planning to live off-grid after famously smashing record house price records when they acquired the sprawling Reedy Creek home for $8.75m in 2022. But they are now planning on giving the farming life a crack. 'We are looking at so many properties, we spend our weekends out in the country, driving and looking for land,' she told Daily Mail Australia at the end of 2024. 'We haven't found the perfect spot yet, but I feel like we're getting close. But the former Miss Universe Australia winner explained that they were yet to settle on the right plot of land 'It's really important to get the right piece of land for what we want to do and it's really exciting.' She added that they want to build a luxury farmhouse when they do eventually land on a site for their potential new home in the countryside. 'We'd like a luxury farmhouse, barn-style with lots of veggie gardens,' she explained. And it now looks as though once they do finally find their new abode, the pair could look to start a colony of bees and make their own honey.

Nerang Administration Centre: Plans for affordable housing at ageing Gold Coast site
Don't miss out on the headlines from Gold Coast. Followed categories will be added to My News. The rundown Nerang Administration Centre could be turned into an affordable housing precinct under a radical City plan to address the Gold Coast's accommodation crisis. Built in 1976 as the base for the former Albert Shire Council before amalgamation the building, which is renowned for its water leaks, houses 1000 Gold Coast City Council staffers. City officers are investigating options for its future use but council sources reveal discussions are already underway with the State Government on creating an affordable housing precinct on the edge of the Nerang CBD. The added benefit is other facilities like a community hall being moved to the centre of town. Councillor Peter Young supports the move, which could see a public-private partnership. 'There are lots of moving parts at the moment in relation to the administration centre site, the Bicentennial centre site and the future of community facilities, and lots of options in the mix,' he said. The Nerang Administration Centre, which was once the old Albert Shire council chambers, is on a site which could be converted for affordable housing. 'My primary focus is on the provision of high quality facilities to serve the community of Nerang and the surrounding suburban and hinterland areas — for example, an evacuation centre, auditorium and meeting rooms along with customer service. 'I welcome the potential for affordable housing on the current administration site – Nerang desperately needs additional population to support local businesses and commerce. 'However, there will be a need to focus on the quality of such residential development and the communities that we create.' Mr Young said he was working with City CEO Tim Baker and other senior staffers and consultants in the pursuit of a final outcome. 'It is an exciting prospect but there are many challenges,' he said. The Nerang Bicentennial Community Centre, part of a large site which could become an affordable housing project. Mayor Tom Tate said the City's recent purchase of the Corporate Centre had consolidated office accommodation in the Bundall precinct and was made on the back of moving out of Nerang. 'Having staff, contractors and councillors commuting between Bundall and Nerang for 30 years since amalgamation has been anything but ideal and I think it shows the current council is prepared to make hard decisions that benefit the City's operations,' he said. Sources suggest the state government Housing Department was in the past reluctant to consider the Nerang site. Council employees at the Nerang offices. City councillors and senior managers are planning to meet with Housing Minister Sam O'Connor on June 13, where talks will include the current homeless crisis. With dozens of rough sleepers at Carey Park in Southport highlighting a lack of low cost housing, the spotlight is on providing more accommodation in the city. A pile of belongings from a homeless person evicted from Carey Park at Southport. Other rough sleepers said council had instructed to leave it near the footpath. Gaven MP and former Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon supports the City's housing plan. 'Unlike LNP NIMBY Housing Minister Sam O'Connor who axes housing in his own backyard, I support affordable housing in my community,' Ms Scanlon said. 'Building homes here would at least go some way to making up for the hundreds of affordable houses the LNP have already scrapped on the Gold Coast.' Mr O'Connor and Ms Scanlon had previously clashed on Labor's plan for affordable housing at the old Arundel golf course site. EXCLUSIVE Shock twist after young man was found dead in a hotel room - as his heartbroken sister breaks her silence
The young man found dead in a hotel room with 'suspicious injuries' survived being shot at from point blank range seven years ago. Matthew Pascoe, 35, was found unresponsive at the Hinterland Hotel on Station Street in Nerang, on the Gold Coast, about 11.15am on Saturday. Police declared his death as suspicious after the 35-year-old was found with 'significant head and internal injuries'. On Thursday, a 34-year-old Nerang man was charged with one count of murder. Mr Pascoe's sister Caitlyn Pascoe broke her silence to share her gratitude to detectives for the swift development. 'We miss him dearly and want to thank the police for getting us answers so soon,' she told Daily Mail Australia. Mr Pascoe's death comes after he miraculously survived being shot at from point blank range seven years ago. In April 2018, the then 28-year-old got into an argument with another man, Tyson James Scott Boulden, then 22, at a park in Nerang. Boulden was found to have a sawed off shotgun, which 'unintentionally' discharged and sprayed Mr Pascoe's legs with pellets. He pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and possessing a shortened firearm and was handed a three-year prison sentence. Daily Mail Australia does not suggest the shooting is related to Mr Pascoe's death in any way or that Mr Boulden was involved. Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Mark Mooney said Mr Pascoe checked into the hotel with his mother around 2pm on Friday and went out three hours later. He was last seen on CCTV footage at the hotel's reception about 6.20pm before he returned to his room, where the alleged murder is believed to have taken place. Ms Pascoe paid tribute to her brother in a GoFundMe raising funds for his funeral, describing him as 'a bright light' to his loved ones. 'It is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the passing of our beloved brother, Matthew Pascoe, who left us far too soon,' she wrote. 'Matthew was more than just a brother - he was a bright light in the lives of everyone who knew him. 'His kind heart, sense of humor, and unwavering love for his family and friends touched so many. Losing him has left an immeasurable void in our lives.' Ms Pascoe said his loss will be felt immeasurably, especially for his nieces and nephews 'who thought the absolute world of him'. 'As we begin to navigate the heartbreak of this loss, we are hoping to raise funds to give Matthew the heartfelt and dignified farewell he deserves,' she said. 'If you're unable to donate, we ask that you please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers.'

Man charged with murder of Matthew Pascoe after body found in Gold Coast hotel room
A man has been charged with murder after the discovery of a body in a Gold Coast hotel room on the weekend. Paramedics were called to the Hinterland Hotel in Nerang, where the body of 35-year-old Matthew Pascoe was found, at about 11am on Saturday. Police said hotel staff found the Nerang local lying on his back next to a bed in room seven. An autopsy on Tuesday determined he died from what police said were significant head and internal injuries, prompting detectives to launch a homicide investigation. A 34-year-old Nerang man was charged with one count of murder overnight. He is due to appear at Southport Magistrates Court this morning. Detective Inspector Mark Mooney said on Wednesday that Mr Pascoe had checked into the hotel at 2pm on Friday with his mother, but that she left and did not return. He said Mr Pascoe was subject to a court order prohibiting him from drinking alcohol at home, which was why he was staying at the hotel. Mr Pascoe was last seen alive visiting the reception area at about 6:20pm, CCTV footage indicated. Inspector Mooney said there were no obvious signs of a struggle in Mr Pascoe's room or any evidence of an obvious confrontation with anyone in the hotel. Caitlyn Pascoe, Mr Pascoe's sister, said his death "left a hole in our hearts that truly can never be fixed". "He always had my back and no matter what he was always there ready to protect his family," she said.
