Haj fraud victims urged to lodge official complaints with TH - Mohd Na'im
KUALA LUMPUR: Individuals who have fallen victim to haj fraud have been urged to come forward and lodge official complaints with Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) to facilitate prompt investigation.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said that reports lodged would be followed up with a thorough investigation to enable the Attorney General's Chambers to take legal action under Section 27 of the Tabung Haji Act 1995 against the individuals or companies involved.
'We also urge victims to lodge police reports so that investigations can be initiated against those who offered haj packages but failed to fulfil them, with the funds collected unaccounted for,' he said.
He said this when met after officiating the PPZ-MAIWP 2024 Zakat Collection Agent appreciation ceremony here today.
Mohd Na'im added that his ministry has taken various measures to curb haj fraud, including issuing no fewer than 10 media statements each haj season to remind the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling prey to irresponsible parties.
Meanwhile, Mohd Na'im expressed regret over the actions of certain irresponsible parties who exploited the credibility of religious figures to persuade the public to join haj packages offered by their companies.
'It is deeply saddening when religion, and individuals perceived to be religious, are being used to deceive others. Religion should never be a tool for fraud,' he said.
He also reminded religious figures to refrain from being directly or indirectly involved in such activities, and instead urged them to support the government and TH in nurturing a law-abiding and ethical Muslim society.
On June 14, media reports revealed that 47 Malaysian pilgrims allegedly fell victim to a scam, believed to be linked to a prominent religious figure.

Iran Urges IAEA To Act Against Israel
Iranian Ambassador to Malaysia Valiollah Mohammadi Nasrabadi during the Solidarity Visit to the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Tuesday. By Nur Atiq Maisarah Suhaimi KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 (Bernama) -- Iran has urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take strong actions against Israel's blatant aggression on its territory. Iranian Ambassador to Malaysia Valiollah Mohammadi Nasrabadi said the IAEA should condemn Israel's actions and prevent further violations of international laws. bootstrap slideshow "Israel, as a non-member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), attacks the country which is a member of the NPT, so the IAEA must have a very strong position against Israel and stop them from this aggression,' he told reporters after meeting some 50 representatives from Malaysian non-governmental organisation during a solidarity visit at the Embassy here, Tuesday. The visit was led by the president of the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (MAPIM), Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid. To a question whether Iran will leave the NPT, Valiollah said Iran remains committed to the treaty. Iran has been a signatory to NPT since 1970. Iran on Monday said that the authorities will decide whether to withdraw from the NPT, following IAEA's report that found Iran is in breach of its nuclear obligations for the first time in 20 years. Meanwhile, Azmi said MAPIM will hold a peaceful rally in solidarity with the Iranian people on June 20. The group is expected to march from Masjid Tabung Haji after Friday prayers to the Embassy of the United States where it will submit a memorandum of understanding (MoU) outlining its stance and demands in regards to the escalating conflicts between Israel and Iran. Regional tension has escalated since Friday after Israel launched coordinated air strikes on multiple sites across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory strikes. -- BERNAMA BERNAMA provides up-to-date authentic and comprehensive news and information which are disseminated via BERNAMA Wires; BERNAMA TV on Astro 502, unifi TV 631 and MYTV 121 channels and BERNAMA Radio on FM93.9 (Klang Valley), FM107.5 (Johor Bahru), FM107.9 (Kota Kinabalu) and FM100.9 (Kuching) frequencies. Three Malaysians arrested in Singapore for evading over S$800,000 in cigarette duty & tax
SINGAPORE: Three Malaysian men have been arrested for suspected evasion of S$812,384 (S$1=RM3.30) in cigarette duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST) following an enforcement operation at Gul Drive. In a statement, Singapore Customs said that during the operation on June 10, its officers observed the three men, aged 24, 30, and 40, transferring brown boxes between two Malaysian-registered vehicles parked by the roadside. 'Officers moved in to conduct checks and found 7,400 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes in a prime mover attached to a trailer, and 100 cartons in a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). 'The three men were arrested at the scene. Both vehicles and the duty-unpaid cigarettes were seized,' the agency said on Tuesday, adding that the two vehicles had entered Singapore separately. Singapore Customs said the 30-year-old suspect had allegedly driven the prime mover from Malaysia, with the duty-unpaid cigarettes concealed among boxes of coffee products. The 24-year-old allegedly assisted with transferring the duty-unpaid cigarettes to the MPV, while the 40-year-old was allegedly tasked with delivering them to customers in Singapore. All suspects are believed to have been recruited by unidentified individuals in Malaysia. Court proceedings are ongoing. Buying, selling, conveying, delivering, storing, keeping, possessing, or dealing with duty-unpaid goods are serious offences under the Customs Act and the GST Act. Offenders can be fined up to 40 times the amount of duty and GST evaded and/or jailed for up to six years. Vehicles used in such offences are also subject to forfeiture.
